Avatar 9:25am wmfromdumont:

First Sebastian album was cut and set for release in late '68. A single was issued on Kama Sutra in late '68 but the label folded soon after. Then management decided to pit MGM and Warner Bros. against each other and the shenanigans delayed the release for over a year.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am doctorjazz:

That was a great band (RSJ and the Decoding Society), just disappeared...
  9:59am Jeff:

Used to see RSJ and the Decoding Society quite a bit. It was an offshoot of Ornette’s Prime Time and incl Vernon Reid (guitar) and Melvin Gibbs (bass). Lots of great live music in NYC back then.
Avatar 9:59am TDK60:

Nice unusual tone for banjo by Vernon R.

Avatar 10:04am Andrew in Toronto:

@Jeff You`re a lucky guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug in JC:

Ah, two bassists. That explains something. Gibbs and Bruce Johnson. Gibbs was in Rollins Band later on. Weird world
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am doctorjazz:

Ah, missed the 2nd bass...
Avatar 10:07am Bob Brainen:

northguineahills, glad to hear!
Yeah doc, don't know what happened.
Jeff, sounds like a great show. I did get to see Prime Time but the sound was not great. Yeah Doug, one and the same Vernon R.
  10:07am Frank Zaatar:

Hey Bob, a little late to the party, but did you ever find the artist for that King of Slang track? A bit of Goggling turned this up:
I thought it sounded like Pigpen but on second hearing the harp is too competent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Doug in JC:

"the bassist play different lines - one twice as long as the other" I'm going to have to listen to it on headphones later
Avatar 10:07am wmfromdumont:

I watched MG get very angry at a malfunctioning bass amp one evening at the Knitting Factory while play with Sonny Sharrock.
  10:12am Jeff:

Andrew in Toronto, you’re right. Even though I blew off a lot of Fillmore East shows, growing up in NYC gave me the opportunity to experience a lot of incredible live music.
Avatar 10:12am Bob Brainen:

Frank Zaatar, thanks so much! Some of those names make sense now. I woulda got it cause of Emmy Lou.
Doug In JC, the 2 bass set-up always blew my mind. To stay out of each other's way is not always easy.
Bands w/2 basses: Ornette's Prime Time, Antietam. Decoding Society come to mind.
  10:13am french yak:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug in JC:

I'm going to have to look them up, Bob. Thanks
Avatar 10:17am Bob Brainen:

Any other bands have 2 bassists?
I know Trane employed 2, like Dr. Art Davis, besides Garrison.
Antietam is only "Rock" band I can think of. Other bands?
  10:17am Jeff:

I think the first time I saw Ornette was ‘77. It was an amazing concert: Double Quartet w/Higgins, Blackwell, Cherry, Redman, etc, the Revolutionary Ensemble w/Blood Ulmer and what I believe was the debut of Prime Time w/Shannon Jackson. Also, saw Prime Time at Ornette’s loft (and many other times). Those were the days!
Avatar 10:18am Bob Brainen:

Sure Doug.
Jeff, woie zowie!
Avatar 10:18am wmfromdumont:

Not a band or maybe 2 bands but Ornette's Free Jazz comes to mind.
  10:19am bigplanetnoise:

Morning, Bob! Late to the party - is there any coffee left??
Avatar 10:19am Andrew in Toronto:

@Jeff Thanks for that.
Avatar 10:21am Bob Brainen:

Free Jazz for sure wm.
Hey BPN, what flavor and how do you like it?
  10:22am Jeff:

That Ornette Double Quartet set that I saw had David Izenzon and Buster Williams on bass. I don’t know where Charlie Haden was???
  10:22am Frank Zaatar:

Pharaoh Sanders had 2 bassists.
  10:23am bigplanetnoise:

Frank Zataar, on record?
BPN, comin' up!
Hey Gina B!
wm. I can only think of Antietam.
  10:24am Bob in DC:

The last Ratdog (Bob Weir) tour had Robin Sylvester on electric bass and Rob Wasserman on standup
Avatar 10:24am TDK60:

I saw a 3-bass/1 drum new wave rock band ('86?) but forget their name.
Avatar 10:25am Bob Brainen:

Bob in DC, good one.
  10:26am WM:

@JeffL I envy you I heard Ornette with Prime Time twice. The double quartet performance sounds historic. I've also heard RE and Ulmer, but I never heard music at Ornette's loft.
Avatar 10:26am TDK60:

Forgot about other '80s band, Hugo Largo, 2 bass/violin.
  10:26am french yak:

The Dirtbombs had (have?) two bass players much of the time
Avatar 10:27am Bob Brainen:

Dang, mu HTML didn't work. I'm gettin' close but no go...yet! Anyway Milford Graves really was a polymath.
  10:27am WM:

Thanks for Love Cry and Milford Graves. WFMU did a good job in paying homage to the great drummer

Avatar 10:40am wmfromdumont:

There's a fascinating interview with Wilson from '68 on youtube. Really astute cat.
  10:40am Listener Bop Monroe:

that would be Busta cherry Jones
Jones was then hired to play additional bass and rhythm guitar (alternating with Byrne, Weymouth and Jerry Harrison) on Talking Heads’ Remain in Light tour.
Avatar 10:40am Bob Brainen:

Yo Geno!
wm. I will check that out. Thanks!
  10:42am gf2002:

The Blind Owl was one of the greatest - great slide guitarist too. One of my favorites. That compliment from John Lee captured on tape says it all. Thanks for playing Hooker N' Heat this morning, Bob! Turn up the Heat
  10:42am gene sculatti:

Hi, Bob. Nice to be listening live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Zetti:

:) Hi bob and crew.
  10:42am Listener Bop Monroe:

saw the debut of that band at the Heatwave Festival... and then a week later at the Scheaffer Music (dr pepper by then?) show in Central Park
Avatar 10:42am Ross T.:

First concert I ever saw was Canned Heat. Just after Woodstock with Harvey Mandel on guitar. It was during the day and my mom took my friend and me! All I remember is the stage bounced from Bear Hite and they signed autographs by concessions.
  10:42am Kpx:

Ah Yes!, I understand that punxsutawney Phil stuck his chubby little groundhog head out of his hole and declared six more weeks of a snowy winter just because he's an avid Bob brainen listener. Just goes to show that sometimes it's good to have friends in low places.
Avatar 10:43am Ross T.:

Anyway, along with his other talents, Al Wilson was an uncannily wonderful harp player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am steveo:

Geez, Punxsutawney is practically in Pittsburgh. Why do we allow that little pest to lord it over us eastern folk?
  10:45am gf2002:

I've been listening to a lot of Canned Heat this past year. Al Wilson was one of the most creative players both on harp and guitar, and his guitar playing was understated but he always threw in a killer lick that made your ears stand up, "what was THAT?". Monster harp player too. On The Road Again, when he hits that high note...wow
Avatar 10:45am Jack:

I was a huge early Canned Heat fan. "Poor Moon" being my favorite tune.
Avatar 10:46am Bob Brainen:

Me too, got to see them twice w/ Blind Owl!
He really was amazing!
Avatar 10:47am wmfromdumont:

John Fahey's version of Sail Away Ladies with Wilson on veena is transcendent.
Avatar 10:48am Ross T.:

I am a fairly decent harmonica player but I could never figure out his solo on "On the Road Again.' I think he may have doctored his harps. That plus his brilliance and soul.
Avatar 10:49am Bob Brainen:

wm. agree! That was an old recording he dug up. From back in Md. days.
  10:49am gf2002:

That clip of the Heat on Playboy After Dark playing Turpentine Moan has one of my favorite Blind Owl moments (and guitar moments in general)...he hits this lick on the slide that's out of this world. Makes me smile every time
Avatar 10:50am Bob Brainen:

Playboy After Dark was utterly surreal!
  10:50am gf2002:

I did hear he's playing a modified harp on "On The Road Again"! That high note is crazy. Al spent a lot of time with the original bluesmen and as a result knew a lot of their tricks like modifying reeds that few others would know
Avatar 10:52am Ross T.:

@gtf2002 Yeah, crazy!
  10:52am Docrock:

Thank you Bob for another great broadcast.
  10:52am gf2002:

I wish there could be a full release of Playboy After Dark at some point - The musical guests were amazing. I love the clip of Deep Purple playing Hush where they're playing so loud the sound is totally distorted haha

Byrds, Three Dog Night, James Brown, Ike and Tina, Nilsson among many others - They need to get a DVD compilation of that show happening! It's worth it too just to see Barbi Benton and the other groovy dancers. Canned Heat was on multiple times I think
