Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Hello Joseph R! Same to you!
Avatar 10:08pm Franco Twinkie:

All this blue screen from the 80's is so charming and primitive. I use to work on a lot of these spots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Little Danny:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Little Danny:

@franco: what sorta work were ya doin'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Little Danny:

Avatar 10:12pm chresti:

Speed Racer looking,
Avatar 10:12pm Franco Twinkie:

I did lots of car ads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Little Danny:

Can I order an '80s style promo for the Cool Blue Flame, Franco?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Little Danny:

Blue flames a must.
Avatar 10:14pm TDK60:

Video discs, lasted a year or so?
Avatar 10:14pm still b/p:

Several spots back, the ITT animation of aerial view across and around cityscape...was that '83 like many of these others? Seemed more sophisticated than what systems could do that early.
Avatar 10:15pm Franco Twinkie:

I wish Danny. I'm out of the game, BUT, I still hand make a lot of stuff. Lets talk, I'd love to put something together for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Little Danny:

Oh man Franco let's do!
Avatar 10:16pm Franco Twinkie:

Your on!
Avatar 10:17pm chresti:

Wow, Levis 1984.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Little Danny:

@still b/p: missed that one, alas. Franco could probably confirm the accuracy of '83 but those sorts of graphic city-grid perspectives do feel very mid-'80s to me.
  10:18pm Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy
  10:18pm Andres:

Good evening, Little Danny!
Hey, audio/video fans!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Little Danny:

I have a pair of '80s Levi's cords. Never acted a fool like that before though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Little Danny:

Hi Phillippe, hi Andres! Good people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Little Danny:

Now that I look at these I'm seeing aerial grid views all over the place.
Avatar 10:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Levi cords rule! I had every color.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Little Danny:

Lots of white people breakdancing, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Aitch:

The comfy chair!
  10:22pm Phillippe Bastille:

This is a really interesting chat board when you can’t see the video
Avatar 10:23pm TDK60:

I like the hip Mondrian office. That chair must've lasted till '88.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm melinda:

Wang!
Avatar 10:24pm still b/p:

The ITT piece was a long smooth fly-thru of city with girder-buidlings and full structures appearing in place in the layout as cam view traveled, with highways, etc., and without the strictly graphic appearance of other designs of the period. Just curious. Can't find it so far in a search.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Aitch:

Apologies you're missing the vids Phillippe Bastille, but your day will come.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Little Danny:

Haha Phillippe, I'm sorry! I keep meaning to hire some sort of transcription service for that extra chat frisson.
Avatar 10:25pm coelacanth∅:

i'm missing levis cords on the flameoscope that wont work? that's almost the only pants i wore for a few years. in jr high i had a red one and an almost white one, which i'd decorated.
i learned that some people knew me as the kid with the red pants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Little Danny:

@Phillippe: It's been a compilation of '80s computer-generated advertisements thusfar. Aerial grid patterns, white people break-dancing, office furniture deconstructions.
Avatar 10:27pm Franco Twinkie:

All this stuff is from right before I started. My first job was a Dodge commercial in 1985 as a scenic painter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm WR:

video smideo. I'm here for the sounds and random bon mots from listener comments. Oh, the host sometimes has matters of interest to share as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm melinda:

Maru!
  10:29pm Phillippe Bastille:

I think Ken needs to find flameoscope streaming on the next iteration of the app for sure
Avatar 10:29pm StringOFperils:

I dunno. Cat with box on head hard to beat.
  10:29pm Phillippe Bastille:

*fund
Avatar 10:29pm chresti:

The Maru circus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm melinda:

Maru has nice furniture too.
Avatar 10:29pm still b/p:

Working at small-market TV station in early 80s, the computer style grids and backgrounds were becoming so popular everywhere else that I asked the one-man art department to just create a drawn grid in perspective and we chroma-keyed it to create the look and join the party/vocabulary. Primitive and slightly pathetic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Little Danny:

@Phillippe: so you're listening via the app? You can always go to playlist page (and Flame-o-Scope) via the website on whatever mobile browser you're using.
Avatar 10:31pm TDK60:

This reminds me of Broadcast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Aitch:

Especially with cats and boxes playing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Little Danny:

Yes another stone classic Maru that combines boxes + swings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Little Danny:

@TDK: *VERY* Broadcast, this track in particular. Great album. Other tracks have a sorta southwest-y Lee Hazlewood vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Little Danny:

Hi WR! I see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Little Danny:

Love that, still b/p. You were there. You were the grid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Little Danny:

Damn this is a trippy track.
Avatar 10:35pm coelacanth∅:

twitch (i must come up with a "clever" derogatory pun-name for that) wont allow firefox to display the video. same old story.
i can watch it in a separate window, but why?
  10:36pm dano59:

Listening after the new Charlie Kaufman film. This Heather T is nice. A bit oversynthesized / sets it apart from, say, Luna
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Little Danny:

@coela: don't know, but this is what's happened before, no? (And some weeks it works?) Thanks either way for trying.
Avatar 10:36pm coelacanth∅:

yes to Heather Trost
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Little Danny:

Hi Dano59! I'm Thinking of Ending Things, right? I've read, watched, and listened to so many reviews of it I think I'm set.
Avatar 10:38pm coelacanth∅:

yes Danny this is the same message you used to get MOST of the time; but it's been a few months working, i think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Little Danny:

Video-impaired friends: There are some very good eyeglasses being modeled right now.
Avatar 10:38pm coelacanth∅:

(i used to get, that is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Little Danny:

Those faux-bamboo frames.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Aitch:

Must show The Art of Fashionable Spectacles to my daughters
  10:42pm dano59:

It’s worthwhile if you have seen his other work. Lengthy Pauline Karl monologue on Cassavettes, dance numbers, snow, aging...
I can listen/chat in phone app but hitting play on Flame-O kills the sound. :(
Avatar 10:43pm chresti:

Something to wear to the Luau themed party, the bamboo glasses.
  10:44pm Phillippe Bastille:

My phone is kinda small (like I get made fun of small). Will need to make the effort to use the laptop next week to be able to see anything
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Matt from New Orleans:

You can mute the video Dano
  10:46pm dano59:

Small is good, Philippe. Rocking an SE here
Avatar 10:47pm northguineahills:

  10:47pm Phillippe Bastille:

Me as well, Dani
  10:48pm Phillippe Bastille:

*dano
  10:48pm dano59:

@Matt: no, playing video on show page in Safari kills the audio in the app. Not an issue on laptop. I’ll try it all in Safari next with pop up player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Little Danny:

@dano59: ah, that's funny. The FMU app on my phone plays through anything and everything, it seems invincible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Little Danny:

Hey heh NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Little Danny:

Hmm, so I need to work on sending my audio signal out through the Twitch stream itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Matt from New Orleans:

No worries Dano. I’m watching the video on my iPhone muted and listening in the app without issue. I’m guessing you haven’t tried to mute the audio in the video player by clicking the speaker at the bottom left next to the play/pause button.
  10:53pm Phillippe Bastille:

Saw your comment about safari dano. I just tried it and the same thing happened to me.
  10:54pm dano59:

The older FMU app had a background play function, QuickTime thru Safari, but only against other apps. This seems a Safari glitch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Little Danny:

@Dano: You might also try forgetting the app altogether. Use the pop-up link at the top of the playlist, which should open the audio in a browser window. I'm able to hear music + see video through browser windows on my phone thusly.
Avatar 10:56pm still b/p:

When i was 14, I knew a guy who was 15 who asserted Play With Fire was the worst Stones song ever.
  10:57pm Phillippe Bastille:

It must be an iPhone-wide issue. I just tried the duckduckgo browser and that paused the app as well. Damn that Tim Apple!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Little Danny:

Huh. It seems in a league with their other mid-'60s stuff, still b/p. Not the most original, perhaps, but... not the worst. What did this guy single out as being so bad?
  10:58pm dano59:

Hmmm - if I missed Maru it’s pointless (jk)
Avatar 10:58pm coelacanth:

it's not one of their best. (i like this cover better) but of all the stones songs?
lots and lots of crappy stones songs post-goats head soup-
Avatar 11:00pm coelacanth∅:

isn't there something you can use for embedded video that isn't owned by the worst scum on earth? there must be options, no?
  11:00pm dano59:

Twice as Much -from the incestuous Immediate label. (I liked it)
Avatar 11:00pm still b/p:

I don't know. He was a big Stones fan. Seemed to love the then-current Exile on Main St.. Happily claimed no one could prance like Jagger. But despised Play With Fire.
Avatar 11:01pm still b/p:

I think he found it sappy and uninteresting. Like a poor effort.
Avatar 11:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, this afternoon my friend Craig told me he had a dream that The Rolling Stones were originally a bunch of house cats that were gradually replace by humans.
  11:02pm dano59:

OK, simultaneous A plus V playback now sorted. Thx Tim Apple
Avatar 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

so was this pre-it's only rock n roll? if so... maybe he was right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Little Danny:

@dano: excellent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm melinda:

I don't think most rock n roll front men attempted prancing, outside of Mick. I'm liking the idea of bad prancers though.
Avatar 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

Franco and *that* may be true
Avatar 11:04pm chresti:

Haha melinda.
  11:04pm Andres:

dano: Now that you’ve fixed it, turn it up loud, I find that helps :)
  11:04pm dano59:

Did Donovan prance?
No prancing to Play With Fire.
Avatar 11:05pm coelacanth∅:

Steven Tyler pranced, alice cooper frontman pranced, Paul Rogers pranced...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm melinda:

@coel were they as good?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm melinda:

@coel were they as good?
Avatar 11:07pm Franco Twinkie:

Sky Saxon got a bit prancy in Psych Out, while singing Two Fingers Pointing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm melinda:

please excuse the double post
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Aitch:

Prone to prance a bit myself when I'm on the turps
Avatar 11:08pm still b/p:

The judgment on Play With Fire was delivered, on a few occasions, in 1972.

Franco -- Harlem Shuffle video's got wild cartoon cats....so...
Avatar 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

s b/p but - no! there were some serious crappers on their satanic majesties request... and on exile for that matter.
- and i don't know maybe i was as much of a stones fan at that time as he was
  11:08pm Andres:

Are we talking about prancing or strutting? I think the latter. Many do it well. Degrees of intensity is the variable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm melinda:

prancing is fun
Avatar 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

melinda yeah, probably not nearly!
  11:09pm dano59:

Prince pranced...
hey these Nomads chords and woo-oohs are fab
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Aitch:

Prancersize!
www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm melinda:

I think the dwarves in Spinal Tap sort of pranced.
Avatar 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

hmmm, good question Andres
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Aitch:

Strut totally different
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm melinda:

Mick did both, I believe. He had some moves for sure.
Avatar 11:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Stacey Peralta - that long blond mop.
Avatar 11:12pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha i thumbs-upped that video! apparently the first one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Little Danny:

Freddie of Freddie and the Dreamers did some sort of Dadaistic half-prance half-jump.
  11:13pm Andres:

Prancing is straying into dancing turf which is why I make the distinction. But I think Melinda is right that Mick straddled both best.
  11:13pm dano59:

What’s the perfect skateboard vid music?
I say Velvet Crush, or power pop in general
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Little Danny:

OMG I remember that Prancersize vid
Avatar 11:13pm still b/p:

Someone who likes the bad boy periods and more raw flavors of Stones output might not like something like their version of Fortune Teller, but I get a kick out of it. Some want a particular posture, grit and strut. But why Fire would be the primary violation, who can say?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Little Danny:

@Dano: Hard rock I say. Power pop seems too carefully coiffed for these street kids but I dunno.
  11:16pm dano59:

There’s so much to like / love about the Stones, I try not to split hairs (except to say not everything on Exile is genius - coel and I are in the minority there)
Avatar 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

s b/p well the lyrics are stupid and the music's boring.
there's that.
still i don't think it's the worst early stones song
Avatar 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

fortune teller's great!

Also hearing the MBV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Little Danny:

Totally, NGH - I love that EP!
  11:22pm Andres:

Now I have to find that EP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm WR:

Kevin Ayers, thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Little Danny:

@WR: Always. This track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Little Danny:

This "Third Avenue El" film is incredible, for those watching.
Avatar 11:24pm northguineahills:

If you want to hear a full studio EP of MBV go full noise, try, Glider.

I haven't heard this Kevin Ayes, odd (nice segue)....

Walter White's salt lab?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Little Danny:

Thanks Andres, this is a deep one!
Avatar 11:43pm northguineahills:

It contains some sodium chloride, so, by FDA guidelines at the time, it's technically salt...

Looks like I missed a great show, on the schedule for tomorrow or Saturday morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm Little Danny:

Hi doc! Get in here!
Avatar 11:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Why would you wash clothes pins with cocaine?
Avatar 11:54pm northguineahills:

@LD: "Do you know how much this mountain is worth!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Little Danny:

Haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Little Danny:

I'll be rearranging my record collection for days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm Little Danny:

Going a few minutes into overtime this evening.
  11:56pm josephrockwell:

Hot track!
  11:56pm dano59:

Can salt clean my records?
That rain barrel bit was subtle
Avatar 11:56pm northguineahills:

Snorting salt would be much more painful then snorting actual snow (we got bored on some Boy Scout trips, as kids, we were morons, you know, salt of the earth).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Little Danny:

Indeed it is, JR!
Avatar 11:57pm northguineahills:

pre-clickied!(most sun-ra is).....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Little Danny:

I've successfully cleaned filth-encased 45s with baking soda before, Dano. So there's that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Aitch:

All this salt-talk making my ears numb
Avatar 11:58pm Franco Twinkie:

The world of salt is a place of everlasting sorrow.
Avatar 11:59pm northguineahills:

Thanks and UUUs, LD!
Avatar 11:59pm still b/p:

Why are machines like that ground level salt-loading machine with the hungry arms so extremely satisfying to watch in action?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Little Danny:

There is certainly junkie-like fetishization happening here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Little Danny:

@still b/p: I don't know either but I agree that it is satisfying and hypnotic.
Avatar 12:00am Franco Twinkie:

Is gravel really just salt that is grey?
  12:00am dano59:

We have massive salt deposits in the Finger Lakes and salt mines, 15 miles from here. Someone’s gotta work there...
Avatar 12:01am chresti:

Salt milk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am Little Danny:

I've seen pictures of some visually stunning salt mines. (In the UK, I think?) These are not they.
Avatar 12:02am coelacanth∅:

my older sister once washed some records with comet scouring powder. salt might be less abrasive.
it's all relative
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03am Little Danny:

As someone who loves salty treats the most I would probably drink something called salt milk.
Avatar 12:03am Franco Twinkie:

Do they clean salt with salt?
  12:03am Andres:

Polish salt mine church.
Avatar 12:03am still b/p:

Cape Cod still has streets and locations called "Salt Works. Used to be hundreds of places with arrays of troughs to evaporate it out of seawater.
Avatar 12:04am coelacanth∅:

s b/p it's like the mandibles of a praying mantis
Avatar 12:04am Franco Twinkie:

Time for a hot salt scrub. Thanks Danny.
