Stephen Wrembel does a great gypsy jazz show, saw him at Barbes in Brooklyn many times (back in the days of live music).

Hallo Headcleaner - ja, haben wir, melting fast though at higher temperatures - and yes, the little well is here in the woods near the Wildpark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Yvang:

Yes his songs about killing cops make him an early rapper!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Handy Haversack:

Hello, Bas!

Does anyone know the gypsy jazz guitarist Rodolphe Rafalli? We caught several sets of his trio at Le Piano-Vache in Paris a few years back after I managed to navigate back by dead reckoning to the bar we'd loved the most on our first trip there sixteen years before. It happened to be a Monday, and we stayed for hours so we could see all three sets and then went back the next week with friends so they could see it, too. Good, good stuff.

Austria!? Wow, western Europe seems statistically overrepresented so far in the Random Roads, though my lazy man's math basically involves letting Yeti Bob do it for me, and he does not seem to be here.

Updating the ol' spreadsheet ...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Handy Haversack:

Can anyone give a quick run down of dialectical differences between Austria and German states? I know nothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm David Dichelle:

Handy: Yes, the randomizer makes me chuckle every week in its capriciousness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Threemoons:

Handy--major dialectical pronunciations between Northern German and Barvarian, and by extension Austria. And Swiss German is its own thing. also certain local terms/words vary by region (ie pop vs soda in the US)
Avatar 2:10pm coelacanth∅:

...maybe it's not that random

Yvang - I got to see _Ariel_ and a few others at the Film Forum in NYC, shortly before the civilization's collapse - I really, really miss actual movie theatres
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Stanley:

Österreich. Only been once when I was a young man. Got absolutely arseholed on a 'low alcohol' drink called Sturm. Probably drank a gallon of it, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Yvang:

What? an AI Randomizer with a secret purpose?
  2:11pm headcleaner:

Handy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_dialects#/media/File:Continental_West_Germanic_languages.png
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm David Dichelle:

Yes, there are major differences in the dialects. When spoken in their least watered down forms, they are very hard to understand for other German-speakers. Bavarian and Austrian are very similar, however.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Brian in UK:

His-Styria over here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, all! Figured this was the crowd to ask!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Yvang:

@headcleaner : I agree, seeing the film at the theater makes it a real experience.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Stanley:

Yo Yeti. Close enough in my book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Phillippe Bastille:

My two memories of Austria are the airport and tons of cancer-causing windmills. Regrettably was only there as a travel point on the way to Bratislava.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm David Dichelle:

Hello Yeti Bob, also not very far apart seen globally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Michael 98145:

There was the story of Schwarzenegger -Austrian(!)- once asked if he could dub the Terminator films in German.. They declined politely; i'm not sure what the reason was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Handy Haversack:

Yo, Yeti Bob! Glad you're here -- I almost had to do math on my own!

Stanley, do you know Alasdair Gray, /Lanark: A Life in Four Books/? I'm ordering a copy today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm David (in London):

Hey Yeti Bob.

My Austrian favourite is Linz. It's a lovely little town, and you would think that if you had [a] a wine festival [b] a river festival and [c] an electronic arts festival, you might perhaps space them out over the course of the summer? Or...you could have them all on the same weekend! Someone at the Stube joked me to that nothing happens there all year, but for three days it then becomes the most happening place in Europe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm David Dichelle:

I believe austrian artists often make tortured and provocative art (from Egon Schiele to Michael Haneke), but I don't know if there is an equivalent with austrian musicians...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Brian in UK:

Yvang, main reason to go to Vienna was to see as many Egon Schiele paintings as possible. Bonus was that there was a Lee Miller exhibition at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm David Dichelle:

My last comment was regarding Ian Dury - sorry I'm lagging behind again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Phillippe Bastille:

YetiBob I really liked Bratislava. We were in the old part of the city that they've really fixed so for most of the trip we weren't in the not so nice parts. Cafe's, restaurants, bars with seating in the streets. I was frankly quite surprised how much I liked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Michael 98145:
