Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Julie:

@sylvia the olivia one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Handy Haversack:

We're hanging in with varying levels of fingernails-scrabbling-at-the-shifting-shale-of-the-pit-of-despair, TDK60. About like everyone, I suppose. Planning an expedition to the exotic shores of Jersey City tomorrow to drop off some Greenpoint goodies for the Skeleteam, which will hopefully be a pleasant change of pace and place for the day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Been listening since the beginning just only saying "hi" now, Julie. This MBV is one of our favs, perhaps only bested by "I Only Said"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm David (in London):

Handy, that's an epic expedition. If you're not back in two days, I will send out a search party.
Avatar 2:01pm TDK60:

Handy, Ah nice, visiting radio station central! || Julie, I still have this M.B.V. album on cassette, still works.

Tell them to bring booze, David!

Julie, Polish food from Polka Dot, doughnuts from Peter Pan, some dog treats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Julie:

what's special about Peter Pan doughnuts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Handy Haversack:

Well, I'm not much a dessert person, but I actually like them. Those who enjoy dessert and eat other doughnuts confirm that these are the best in the city. When Kate directed a high school theater, her kids were happy when someone brought in Dunkin Donuts but ecstatic when Kate would bring in Peter Pan. It also looks like 1957 in there.

Handy, I remember on visiting Masada once I said "As a Jew standing on Masada, I know I'm not supposed to say this, but history always gets so much more exciting once the Romans show up." I think I scandalised the assembled company, but it was true.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Handy Haversack:

David, one of my best "always love to try out new material on the road" moments was at the Coliseum in Rome. As the tour guide was herding the group together, I raised my hand and asked, "And just so I understand -- this *is* where Jesus fought the dragon, right?"

You could tell everyone *wanted* it to have been true.

It also has lots of fun inspirational bits of things to have druids spout off about for my game.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Julie:

jesus versus the dragon is my favorite cartoon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm David (in London):

It was poetically true Handy. A great line, hats off.

I had the first phase of my wedding reception atop Dragon Hill, where St George is alleged to have slain the dragon. There is a bald spot where the grass never grows, supposedly where the dragon's blood fell and poisoned the earth.

Avatar 4:34pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:30 chris in the redwoods: Hey Chris, good to see you too!

Let It Be is anything but my favorite Beatles album, but for whatever reason i like this song very much. A pity I no longer have the (very cheap then, post-USSR collapse) Melodija pressing of Let It Be (and White Album and Rubber Soul...) they were charming somehow, like I said dirty cheap then, quite expensive now.

it's a great song anyway, at the very least that guitar line!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Julie:

Avatar 4:40pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Killer groove
Avatar 4:40pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Yes, Dig A Pony still sounds fresh. Spector was suitable for their solo stuff, but Let It Be is a bit tired, even if Lennon thought Spector saved the album (can't point the exact quote right now).
  4:41pm Mark R:

Opinions are divided on the Naked/Original mix of "Let It Be." I prefer the "Naked," mainly for the same reason Paul hated the Spector mix--I didn't think a great song like "The Long and Winding Road" needed all the choirs and bullshit that Spector piled on. He did do some clever things with the insertions of little bits of dialogue etc. It was a difficult project all around, I suppose. I'm looking forward to seeing the new film that shows a side of the sessions that's not nearly as dire as the original film showed. It's supposed to be out soon, but I've been hearing that for a few months now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Julie:

ahh man this is the same damn black swan song I played before LOL sorry about that
Avatar 4:44pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Julie, that song was about a girl saying how people are looking at her everywhere she goes, that other women despise her basically, that she’s having tea on a train, minding her business, spreading her legs and a man was watching and drooling...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm coelacanth∅:

Cha Cha i think Lennon's opinions about music at that time were questionable at best!
spector did a good job with (the impeccable) plastic ono band album though. he probably was producer in title only. hands off kinda thing. imagine starts to get muddy, like all things must pass. spector's doing for sure.
i'd love to hear a "naked" version of all things must pass.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm coelacanth∅:

i'd think Paul must've been pissed that such a song got turned into total shlock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Julie:

hiya Waffle!! if you email me I'll put you on the last minute notify list!
  4:53pm Mark R:

The thing that always perplexed me about "All Things Must Pass" is, Phil Spector recorded the Chiffons song "He's So Fine," and at no time during the recording of "My Sweet Lord" does Phil, say, "Hey, wait a minute--this melody is very, very familiar." FWIW, I think George LIKED Spector's production of that album. He had a chance to do his own "naked" version of it when he re-issued it a few years ago, and he left the Spector mix intact. Also agree about Spector's production of "Plastic Ono Band"--it's perfect. Bare bones, very raw. "I Found Out" sounds like an early punk record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm WaffleMix:

Ok sure
  4:56pm Mark R:

Coel, according to Paul, the first time he heard all that crap was when he heard the song on the radio. That's how bad relations were between the Beatles at the time. John in particular was feeling particularly bitter towards Paul. I know all that softened in later years and they were friends again. Paul seems to get along fine with Yoko these days. Life's too short for grudges.

and i read too that George was happy with the production on atmp. i don't agree though, 'much as i revere Harrison! regarding my sweet lord maybe he said nothing because it shouldn't have been an issue. there are countless famous songs more derivative of other famous songs than that and nobody got sued.   5:11pm Mark R:

My favorite embarrassing interview story is a friend of mine who interviewed Devo, and he didn't really know too much about them, their first record had just come out, and he asked, "So...where did you guys meet?" And they said, "In our bedroom...when we were children." He didn't realize that two of the guys were brothers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm WaffleMix:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm coelacanth∅:

Mark is that movie going to attempt to rewrite history? i heard an interview at the time of the 50th anniversary of the white album with someone... Sean? i've forgotten for the moment but someone close, and younger...someone who'd like people to think differently about it all, despite the well-documented shitshow that was the beatles at that time. trying to say they all got along pretty well and things weren't bad.
this despite George quitting and Ringo quitting and John threatening to quit and John not showing up and getting left out of recording sessions and many songs on that album not being the beatles at all but solo performances...
right.

I've heard the Doors without Morrison. If not for Morrison, there would BE no Doors. Obnoxious as he was. And yes, Julie, he was hot stuff for a couple years there. He'd weigh 300 pounds if he were still alive, you know that, right?

Julie @510 4 guys and an algorithm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Julie:

Yes I know! In fact I went to see the Soft Parade several years ago and THEIR Jim was already the fat Jim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Julie:

like soft parade have been playing way longer than the Doors did
Avatar 5:15pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@Julie after the movie came out, my older brother started listening to The Doors A LOT, and I got into them as well, even got the poetry books... I was a lonely teen, okay 😁
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Rich in Washington:

I was always blown away by the revelation that the surviving Doors had briefly considered Iggy Pop to replace Morrison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm HyperDose:

@Julie So a "fat Elvis" version of Jim? That would be tough to watch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Julie:

I adore that first album I really do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Julie:

He still put on a hell of a show though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm coelacanth∅:

i will always love the end, and Nico did not improve it. the original was groundbreaking and brilliant...but i don't know that i need to ever hear it again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm coelacanth∅:

i definitely wouldn't pay money to see a doors cover band, but especially one that's named after their worst album!
Avatar 5:21pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@5:19 coelacanth∅: not that I have any personal listening experience, but aren't post-Morrison Doors albums even worse than Soft parade?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Handy Haversack:

I just made salsa verde for the first time. Kate came in to taste said it's good and added, "But weren't you going to make me a drink?" And went back to laying down vocal tracks.
Avatar 5:23pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

that’s a lovely version of that song
  5:24pm Mark R:

I think the first Doors album was the best, and really one of the best albums of the 60s, period. Their sound was totally original, Morrison's lyrics were like nothing anybody else was writing, they were really, really great. They had many fine moments after that, but, that first album is really tough to beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm coelacanth∅:

Cha Cha i don't know . i thought they were bland and boring, but not embarrassingly bad like soft parade... but in any case i don't include those in my brain when i think about doors albums.
  5:28pm Mark R:

Generally think Nico's kind of an Emperor's New Clothes kind of deal, but her version of "The End" is so haunting and tortured. In the film "Danny Says" (about Elektra A & R man and all around bon vivant), she and Morrison were having a tumultuous affair while he was "babysitting" Morrison at some house in L.A., with Morrison at one point threatening to jump off the roof. And of course, most of us have seen the film of a drunken Jim dancing along a window ledge about 40 floors above Manhattan. The guy was an accident waiting to happen. Had he not died on July 3rd, 1971, he probably would have died on July 4th. He had a death wish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm coelacanth∅:

Mark i agree. they were seriously revolutionary. their influence is immeasurable, including many musicians who don't like them. (as with the beatles)
i like la woman just as much though.

  5:37pm Dean:

Last hour theme proposal (I know, I've reached quota): bands or songs or both that have to do with architectural elements. So, for example, The Doors. Magazine's "Song From Under the Floorboards," Jack Wilkins' "Windows" (song by Chick Corea), Cecil Taylor's "The Hearth"... Can't think of any more, but the Taylor disc alone, a single track, runs more than an hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Julie:

hi K Wilde! Hmm architecture..that's a thought
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Handy Haversack:

Now I'm shocked I can't think of a band called Post and Lintel *or* Mortise and Tenon.
  5:39pm Dean:

You could broaden the theme by including furniture. Must be lots of songs about rocking chairs, beds, settees...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm coelacanth∅:

you could do an hour of under 5-minute songs with "house" in the titles
Avatar 5:42pm βrian:

And "shack," of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm coelacanth∅:

and mansion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm chris in the redwoods:

have you done a transportation theme? then you could play "The Ship Song" and Handy and would be very happy :)
  5:43pm David in London:

People still say ‘I don’t like The Doors because of Jim Morrison’s persona’ (as if many of his peers were any the less objectionable), but that was half a century ago now, man, move on. It’s perfectly possible to listen to The Doors now divorced from that. As for his ‘pretentious’ poetry / lyrics, well, Lou Reed had plenty of form in that department and few people seem to still give him any gyp over it. Lay all the rest aside and Morrison had a wonderful voice, and they wrote great songs. The footage of him singing Moonlight Drive at the Isle of Wight festival is just unbelievable.
  5:43pm Dean:

Thought maybe Steeleye Span was a reference to an architectural structural component, but no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Julie:

ooh David I will have to watch that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Julie:

ooh Chris transportation I don't think I have, it sounds so obvious too!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Handy Haversack:

Julie, the envelope that came from the UK with all the CDs I'd missed was *not small*. But the holy trinity for me is still Ghost of Cain, Thunder and Consolation, and Impurity.

Also: I would be, Chris! I would be! Also, I like boats. So an all-boat hour, even, would be good for me, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm WaffleMix:

Idk no desire to listen to the Doors...but I do enjoy the covers so maybe the songs have substance. They suffered from classic rock overplay for sure.
  5:46pm Dean:

Gotta play "Trains versus Planes." Can't remember the band name...

  5:53pm David in London:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Phillippe Bastille:

I'd be really confused if I saw a bird loose on an airplane. Like, is the bird flying on his own? Is the pilot in fact flying him? Where does the being flown end and where does the flying on his own start? I think I'm gonna be up late tonight...

Sorry if I'm wrong, but I don't think that Ace of Cups song was among those recorded between 1967-1972 - probably written around then. That sounded quite new, most likely their reunion stuff and their recordings from that 1967-1972 era were not captured in a proper recording studio environment, there was only one tv studio recording + live & rehearsal tapes.
