A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am common:

@AC: now i want to have a beer and watch the snow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Acid Cazh:

@HyperDose — I didn't shower today. My beer was had on my stoop with a cigarette, watching the snow fall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug in JC:

Good morning Trouble. The snow looks really nice so far
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Acid Cazh:

@common Highly recommend it!

Thanks @Jeezy & @Handy for the birthday wishes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am karlward:

But did Heat Miser ever write a song called "Massive Attack"?
  9:19am Kpx:

@AC: or maybe a Johnny Cash fan. 🎼 And the beer I had this morning wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am YETI BOB:

hi Trouble. i was not familiar with Jammie Holmes and now i'm reading about him and looking at (pictures of) a bunch of his work. thanks!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am n8th3gr8:

wow i swear i did not intend to make that so alliterative
Avatar 9:28am wizard frog:

It's been a very alliterative mood this year so far
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am YETI BOB:

n8th3gr8: yo yo yo, i think so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am common:

those are good sounds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Trouble:

I just re-read 'moomim midwinter' by Tove Jansson. I needed to be reminded of the positives of snow and winter b/c the grey cold weather with constant snow threat is weighing me down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Acid Cazh:

@Handy "Roll a constitution saving throw to see how drunk you get during your workday."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Handy Haversack:

I hear that, Trouble. We were hoping to get out of town this week since Kate gets a Feb. break from (depressing, remote) teaching, but the snow proved too much to deal with.

@Acid Cazh, my players fail those rolls on purpose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Acid Cazh:

@Kpx I hate Jim Morrison, but love Kris Kristofferson — who wrote that Johnny Cash song. 🍺
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Acid Cazh:

Thanks Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am melinda:

Morning Trouble and everyone!
Avatar 9:35am northguineahills:

I went to Yoko's 80th bday at BAM, it had everyone playing w/ her.

feliz cumpleanos, Acid Cazh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Acid Cazh:

Thanks @northguineahills!
Avatar 9:36am northguineahills:

de nada, AC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am LastVisibleDog:

@Trouble - love the moomin books, feel I need to re-read Moominpappa at Sea which seems somehow more devoid of any direction than the other books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Acid Cazh:

Today is also the birthday of my best friend's wife. We usually celebrate together, my fiancée and I with them — double date. But, you know... COVID.
  9:36am Kpx:

@AC: major faux pas on my part, giving credit to the singer and not the writer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Trouble:

@lastvisible dog: i will always recommend Tove. her 'summer book' is a frequent re-read for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Acid Cazh:

@Kpx — not at all! I love me some Johnny Cash too, but I'm a lot more likely to put on Kris Kristofferson than a Johnny Cash record (though I have plenty of both).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I had a weird reading experience last week. Started reading Eimear McBride's "The Lesser Bohemians." Bailed after about 3 pages because the style made me crazy. Yes, 3 pages. Then after a quick revisit...now I'm halfway through the book!
Avatar 9:38am northguineahills:

@Kpx: that's my fave Kristofferson/Cash story (Kristofferson landing in a helo on Cash's yard, b/c he had to tell him the song, he wrote the night before....)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am common:

now i want to have a beer and watch cisco pike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am YETI BOB:

I took on the "Yeti" persona partly to help me cope with the winters in Chicago - to encourage myself to go out in the snow and enjoy it, not complain about the cold. Does it work? Yes and no. Most winters, yes, but this winter (+covid) is extra-challenging. I went outside yesterday, I felt like I was stepping out of the safe pod into some harsh alien landscape. (The air had enough oxygen to breathe, I didn't die out there! - maybe I'll try again today). Winter blues / blahs to the Nth degree but this too shall pass.
Avatar 9:38am northguineahills:

(waking Johnny up)
Avatar 9:40am northguineahills:

It's 19C/69C here and sunny herein FL. Las diosas, I miss winter....I know, FL problems....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am YETI BOB:

Occasionally the sun breaks through the clouds, tha helps a lot. Otherwise very much monochrome. Having Florida/Lousiana dreams.
Avatar 9:41am rebuketodali:

I was just informed by the Criterion Collection IG feed that today is also Molly Ringwald's birthday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Handy Haversack:

We had a couple of outside beers with Doug in JC in JC yesterday, and by the time Kate and I were walking, we were frozen just about solid. It's harder when any chance at sociality is confined (ha!) to the outside.

Argh, sorry to complain. It's endurable.

The tunes are warm, Trouble, and warming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am YETI BOB:

@rebuke: 53 Candles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am G:

@Yeti: It was 28 in New Orleans two nights ago. My elephant ear plants did not take it well. Hadn't had a freeze here since 2018. Today, in the 40s for a high and grey. We're getting the far southern end of the stuff up north.
Avatar 9:44am northguineahills:

@Handy: I've had beers outside in Brooklyn, only to have them freeze halfway through....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am YETI BOB:

@G: Sorry about your plants. I saw pictures on the news of a nearly-deserted Bourboun St. On Mardi Gras!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Vivian:

Good Morning from gloomy Atlanta. @WoodsOfNH, for me, books have to speak to me at the right place and right time. Sounds like you encounter that with your book. Never give up!

On the subject of books, just finished Jenny Odell's "How to Do Nothing'. Now moving onto New Jim Crow and Pete Hamill's 'A Drinking Life'.
Avatar 9:45am TDK60:

No problem with snow/wynter here. Of course, my heat's on, unlike for those suffering in the "alone" and *failed* state of Texas.
Avatar 9:45am rebuketodali:

@northguineahills and @yeti Also here in sunny, warm Florida. But FL also has hurricanes, falling iguanas, and DeSantis. The good weather comes at a price.
@yeti HA!
Avatar 9:45am northguineahills:

Had a freeze here in Orlando last year ,(barely), 31F/-1C). it has never got below 37F/3C this winter....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Vivian:

@G - could you cut the frozen parts, so it can regrow when the freezing temps pass?
Avatar 9:46am HyperDose:

@Acid Cazh @9:17 That's a great way to start the day. I think Handy will agree when I say today is the day to take it easy and "Fat Dog" it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Webhamster Henry:

I can't believe Trouble has never played any of these Moomin Voices songs on this show. bluemusicgroup.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 9:46am northguineahills:

DeSantis does more damage here then any weather...
Avatar 9:46am rebuketodali:

@northguineahills TRUTH
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am YETI BOB:

@ngh: What kind of watery beer are you drinking that freezes in cold weather? Try some higher ABV ;-)
  9:47am winston legthigh:

@yeti bob, the wife gave me lou malnatis pizzas shipped frozen from chi-town for valentines day. the crust is amazingly crispy crunchy, super good!
Avatar 9:48am Listener Gregory:

Trouble, seeing today's art work reminds me of the new HBO documentary "Black Art: In the Absence of Light," which I thought was quite good. It discussed specific artists and exhibits and the role of curators and institutions. And it showed a lot of good art.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Stanley:

Well said, Yeti. I had an outdoors meetup the other day and only whisky could do it for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Trouble and chillers. Sending warm thoughts to people and sea turtles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Handy Haversack:

I very sensibly carried my Canadian-flag flask full of Scottish whisky on yesterday's polar expedition!
Avatar 9:49am rebuketodali:

In terms of books, I promised myself that 2021 would be the year that I dive into the work of the James siblings (Henry, William, and Alice). Currently reading Henry James's The Bostonians--I was craving florid 19th century prose and snarky, passive-aggressive pettiness among the characters, and it is delivering on all fronts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am YETI BOB:

@winston: Nice, Lou M. does a really good job! my ATF in Chicago is "Art of Pizza" but they don't ship frozen pies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Trouble:

@vivian: i love that jenny odell book!
Avatar 9:50am HyperDose:

Just going to go ahead and clicky-star the show now (too many tracks to individually favorite). Perfect soundtrack for watching the snow fall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am G:

@Vivian -- I'll give it some weeks to see what the plants do. Hopefully, regrow more big leaves from the root. The leaves that were out when it froze turned to mush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Trouble:

@ listener gregory:another reason i might have to give in and get HBO ( at least temporarily)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am YETI BOB:

if people want to add to the Modern World reading list, here's the link - i'm pleased to see that people are still adding to it! docs.google.com...

@YETI: on that day, it was 14F/-10C, I might have been smoking something w/ a green tinge w/ my friends....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Vivian: Is the Odell book good? That's been on my to-get list for a while.
Avatar 9:52am wizard frog:

Awesome YETI BOB! That's just kinda thing I'd be after!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am YETI BOB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am YETI BOB:

Georges Perec wrote my all-time favorite novel (if I had to pick one), and that picture of him with the cat perched on his shoulder just has so much going for it. Made me happy to see that, G.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Handy Haversack:

Trouble, your 2021 DJ Premium looks great! Very exciting.
Avatar 9:59am northguineahills:

Georges Perec is amazing. I know enough French to sort of read his works, but a lot of the word play is lost if you're not a native French speaker.
  10:00am Dayffid:

Nice book list Thanks! I added one to the end
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am YETI BOB:

ngh: I wish I could read Perec in the original, my French is nowhere near good enough. But David Bellos did an amazing job translating "Life", I think I'm almost as much a fan of Bellos as Perec. Bellos also wrote a great bio of G.P.
  10:03am Clermont F.:

Very sad news yesterday of the death of the great Francoise Cactus of Stereo Total
  10:03am Kpx:

@Yeti: that was interesting that you got your name as a defensive mechanism. I look at the changing seasons like better and sweet herbs. I enjoy the bitter cold gray and white season knowing that the sweet warm green and blue season will taste that much sweeter. Except for Bob Brainen, who is happy as a hog in a snow Waller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Matt!

Also, Matt: Please share a video of Bruce with his pig ear!
Avatar 10:05am northguineahills:

@Yeti: I'll have to check Bellos out. As, I feel I lost a lot of Perec trying to read it in French.
Avatar 10:05am xtrakrispy:

Handy, have you gone back and listened to the archive of your cameo on Scott’s show? That was some good radio...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Vivian:

@Yeti Bob: I just checked out the list, which contains two of my favorite titles 'Severance' and "My Year Of Rest and Relaxation'. Once I finish what I started, I want to find some modern day fiction along those lines. I'll have to check out those recommendations in the Google doc.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Handy Haversack:

Not yet, extrakrispy! We'll find a moment today to do it. Really glad it brought some joy!

Also, that bottle of ojén is going to be delivered today, apparently. A little late for Mardi Gras, but I think we can make allowances.

i could talk about this for hours roberto: wool is not cruel to sheep. it is a natural part of who they are. yes mass industrial farming is bad for animals and for people. but many many farmers use animal friendly methods in the sheep industry. Seek out manafacturers who support those ideals. I am a knitter and buy lots of my yarn from small farmers who depend on their sheep for their living and treat them as such.

Wool yes! There are wool companies that are humane. Wool doesn't retain BO, so you don't have to launder as much. Wool for the win. Recyclable as insulation. Less flammable than synthetics. Furthermore, Ted Cruz is poison.

@Phillippe most wool makes me itchy, including my beloved slippers when worn without socks. But I learned that for me it's the processing and not the wool itself after a weaver friend who raises sheep gave me a home-washed wad of wool to experiment with.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Phillippe Bastille:

@melinda I agree, they add oils and other stuff to the raw wool. I had lanolin in a body wash that made me itch as well, so that seems to be the culprit for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Trouble:

alpaca is a lot softer if wool bothers peeps. certain sheep breeds are also softer than others. the wool from navajo-churro sheep is positively rope like, which is why it is used for rugs.

That's true, Trouble -- I wasn't real clear in what I wrote. People who think they are allergic to wool are actually allergic to the lanolin, but other stuff used in processing can cause reactions as well. At least, that's my understanding.

The problem in Texas is that they decided not to have their grid connect to the national grid so that they could skirt federal regulations. When other states have generation problems they can have energy from the surrounding area delivered through the cooperative grid. Texas valued profits over resiliency and this is the result.

re: wool sensitivity it can also be due to a change in the fibers from harsh detergents used in standard processing, they become less soft or something. That's what my friend told me. I've used straight lanolin on dry skin before so that's not an issue for me but I'm sure it is for some, one can have a sensitivity to just about anything.
