everything i know about the king cake baby learned from 'Sportsy Talk'
  11:13am clarke:

the original was a ring, but it got changed to a plastic tiny baby - if you get the baby you have to buy the next cake. but, all that's over now - it's lent (whatever that means).
  11:13am Dean from Old Bridge:

It’s a small plastic baby. King cakes are weird.

Listener Mariano sent us a bottle of Ojén and Peychaud's bitters, and Kate and I had Jeudi Gras cocktails in his honor!

And then I adapted to the complete lack of Benedictine in north Brooklyn and subbed Ojén for it in a couple of Vieux Carrés yesterday, which worked pretty well!

  11:18am Dean from Old Bridge:

As North Jersey transplant..I still call it Taylor Ham in “central jersey” because the term pork roll invites any number of sub-par generic brands

Sweet memories inducing XTC tune and yep about the bass player....

i heard an interview with andy p and he said the band would break into the munsters theme when they saw rundgren approaching the studio.

XTC famously quit touring, but they were a ferocious live act as YouTube videos clearly show.

@Montmaster J do you look painfully hungover all the time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Hughie Considine:

@Ross T: "Ain't Got No" -- Nina Simone covered it.
  11:27am Zephyr:

Two sides to every story but I'm going with Todd's version of what transpired. Seems Andy P was in true self-sabotage and blame Todd mode. Todd was invested enough to exercise some authority on what happened to the material and good things happened for album/single (which he was of course "blamed" for)...Kinda sad story. What happens when you produce a record for a mental case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Andrew Hollywood:

hot stuff, Michael
  11:29am davefromtoronto:

andy p also said todd r was a genius engineer but a terrible producer...
  11:29am clarke:

andy partridge has often stated that the 'hatred' was over-stated. he does claim that making the album was NOT enjoyable, but lauds the results.
  11:29am Kpx:

Let me see, they would play the munsters theme, and there was a complaint about Todd's huge forehead . To me that would equal big Head Todd and the monsters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am DJ Johnny Cool:

Twitty's version of C'est Ci Bon is a hoot!
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:29am myron feld:

  11:32am phat:

@Squints haha
  11:32am Kpx:

@MS: maybe it would be apropos to play something by big Head Todd and the Monsters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Handy Haversack:

Yo, spodi!

Yes, The Wire is so great, and I agree with your assessment, MS. And The Deuce was excellent. Wish it lasted longer.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:32am Moammar:

"Lupin" est comme ci comme ca. "Bureau des Legendes" .. sublime. A mon avis.

The Wire - i never believed the protagonist was a cop (when he was in The Affair, i never believed he was a writer)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am spodiodi:

hola, Jack! Handy!
The Wire was the best TV show ever made, in my little opinion

  11:35am clarke:

re-watching Casablanca is, indeed, impressive. the more you watch it, the more nuance you get.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Hughie Considine:

Here's Andy on Todd: "He'd ask you how you were going to do the vocals and you would stand in front of the mic and do one run through to clear you throat and he'd say, 'That was crap. I'll come down and record me singing it and you can have me in your headphones to sing along to.' I just thought it was so insulting."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Frank In Queens:

Busy movie week due to the weather: Upside Down: The Creation Records Story, Color Me Obsessed, Wait Until Dark, Charade, and The Long Good Friday.
Avatar 11:35am Hoboken Jack:

The Wire at its best (for me, seasons 2 and 4) is perhaps the best tv ever, but overall I'd say Sopranos is the better show. The Deuce worthwhile just for Franco's dual performance, and two brief appearances by Jersey City's own Wyldlife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug in JC:

"Repeat my mantra: hammmmmmm"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Mister Dobalina:

Let's just say it's made from miscellaneous pork parts.
  11:36am wenzo llc.:

i agree with that although I stopped watching sopranos 2/3 of the way through. and I went to college in Bmore so that may bias me. I think one of the best things about The Wire is that it was intentionally planned to be 5 seasons long so it has a nice arch as opposed to most shows which just keep going & inevitably have crazier & crazier plot twists & go down hill after a while
  11:36am clarke:

arkin arkin arkin!!! the bestest!!
  11:36am pp:

got your Taylor ham and got your Swift ham, but how about Taylor Swift ham?

Yeah, hard to argue, spodi. Dominic West is the weakest part, though, and foregrounding his story is an unfortunate choice. Maybe a necessity? But the show would have been better as a true ensemble.

We watched Silence of the Lambs for Valentines Day. Hard to go wrong!
  11:36am P-90:

Absolutely! The Sopranos is sensational fun, very well done. But The Wire is really ABOUT things, real things in real life. So it’s not as glossy or melodramatically rewarding, it’s but ultimately “better” in that way Michael spoke of.

It's specifically the mix of spices that go into Taylor ham that sets it apart from ordinary pork roll. So there's definitely a difference. When you order pork roll you won't get that spicy taste that you get in Taylor ham. So to baby listener and everyone else, there you go.

She Of The Big Brown Eyes has been on a Brit mysteries binge during the lockdown. It's mildly amusing how the theme to every third Brit show, mystery or comedy, is either a dire cover or really cheesy knockoff of some pop or rock record. Case in point: "New Tricks," whose theme shamelessly rips off the Wilburys' "End Of The Line."

The Sopranos never quite managed to stop romanticizing and falling in love with its subject. It showed the sociopathy and violence but also valorized and glamorized it. It was a tall task, sure, but to me that keeps it from greatness, no matter how well done it is.

MS, I have been making a ton of recipes from that site where you got the chiles rellenos recipe! Salsa, salsa verde, actual homemade enchilada sauce -- it's brand-new territory for me! Thanks for the lead.

@dk50b yes, I mixed up those two films. Didn't realize the march in Blues Bros was based on the notorious Skokie march, which ended up as a TV movie starring Danny Kaye in one of his later roles.

Handy, lol at your v-day flick. hope you had a nice Chianti (i just learned about the secret joke in that line, btw... mildly interesting/amusing trivia www.independent.co.uk... )

Except for that little baroque-pop number at the end (which I don't mind but not what I bought it for), I love that whole All Over The Place record. Especially Dover Beach, which is kinda Crazy Horse lite.

@phat - we've played Omaha several times, including Peony Park for a few dates, some other places too? can't recall offhand. thanks!

According to the internet encyclopedia, Sly once called Jim Ford "the baddest white man on the planet."

@Michael Shelly Ha! I worked at a "Music of Your Life" station in Florida in 1985. It was exactly as you described it.

Good song! made me think of “the bangles girl” by Robbie Fulks which I haven’t heard in a long time

@Hughie Considine I remember the ads for that Danny Kaye TV movie. For some reason it ran a lot on WGN, if I recall correctly. I've never actually watched the show. But everytime I see the word "Skokie" I picture an angry Danny Kaye in a crowd.

Avatar 12:50pm James in ATL:

Really great show today! Thanks, Michael!
  12:51pm P-90:

The “Mother Night” movie is excellent. Definitely worth checking out. But: yes it’s unsparingly faithful to the desolate darkness of Vonnegut’s original. So: maybe best to watch when one is in a generally good mood, like not already suicidal...
Also: for all you Les Paul lacquer fanatics, that’s the same stuff he used many coats of on the wooden “diffusing panels” he built for the home studio in Mahwah. He loved that stuff.

Michael assume you're referring to good old WVOX/WRTN. Visited their studio with a substitute teacher who was into broadcasting. He also took a few of us up to Armonk one evening to demonstrate his portable shortwave. We had a blast. Imagine teacher in his 50s even suggesting such a thing now. books.google.com...
