I've gotten interested in locomotives & am learning to identify the various types. There's a website where you can follow individual locomotives through the photos taken by train buffs around the country. A new way to geek out.

speaking (or singing) of Jimmy Rogers, i have a record of "early" african music and the host introduces each song. one is about a certain tribe who's first "gramophone" record they heard was Jimmy Rogers. they called him (something like) "Chimiroja" and the women apparently assumed he must be a special creature; perhaps 1/2 man 1/2 antelope

When I was a boy my Grandmother sang songs which I only learned later were Jimmie Rodgers songs when I heard them on Merle Haggard's tribute album. She must have had some of the 78s back in the day.

vanhooserd you may be interested there are videos online of entire train journeys, from within the trains.
(such as this one, from the conductor's perspective: www.youtube.com...)
most of them don't have the sounds of classic trains, unfortunately, but i think it's cool to take the journeys, most of which are probably the same ones taken >100 years ago.
