Hi Gary and Friends! This should be fun. Thanks to Peter for providing the tapes! And yeah, this track is killer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Gary:

David! Ike! Tim!
Avatar 7:11pm tim abdellah:

I'm pretty sure I played that song when I was gigging with an Assyrian wedding band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Gary:

Whoa! Multiple points scored, Tim
Avatar 7:12pm tim abdellah:

;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

Tim, since Persian script seems the same as (or close enough to) Arabic, you can keep my transliterations honest, as I'll be posting pics of the covers and cassettes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Threemoons:

Heyo again all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Gary:

Threemoons!
Avatar 7:18pm chresti:

Street, I think, or avenue. It's an E/W street that is in SFV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Threemoons:

Yup, so happy that I found a way to play all of the WFMU stations on both my Jeff Bezos Spying and Capitalism Compliance Device AND via WinAmp! My work days go much more smoothly now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

Street, yes, thank you, Chresti! I just see it now on the cassette image at the top of the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

I'll never get over how amazing the sound of tahrir is
Avatar 7:30pm tim abdellah:

Hey Gary - Google's probably better than me at fleshing out a working Persian transliteration. I don't know how the vowels work in Persian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar 7:39pm chresti:

OK Rich, today's my Friday. How are things in Washington?
Avatar 7:43pm TDK60:

chresti, I know. Dig Persian music, old and newer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Rich in Washington:

It's soggy and melting here. But I'd rather that than have more snow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm doctorjazz:

Hey all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Gary:

DoctorJazz!
Avatar 7:49pm TDK60:

Gary, were you saying most of this later music was recorded in California, or that's just where the record label was?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm doctorjazz:

More snowpredicted for New York and New Joisey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

That's where the record labels are, yes, and I think *most* of it was recorded there, too ... but not all of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

So, for instance, that singer we just heard, Shaghayegh, I think is Canadian? Here's a FB page about her: www.facebook.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Gary:

This woman, Shohreh, had a significant career in swing in Iran before having to leave in the late 70s/early 80s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm WR:

interesting and fun music and the pictures of the cassettes is a big plus. thank you, already this is a show for repeat listening.
Avatar 7:53pm tim abdellah:

Wow, this rocks!
Avatar 7:58pm tim abdellah:

La Googoosh! What is that white pill thing on that cassette scan. And why is she talking about Elvis Presley and James Dean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Gary:

Haha, the white pill thing is a cut-out -- this cassette was remaindered. Googoosh! Remaindered!
Avatar 7:59pm tim abdellah:

That's just wrong!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Gary:

It's not right!
Avatar 8:02pm TDK60:

Never turn your nose up to a remaindered cassette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Gary:

Avatar 8:06pm tim abdellah:

That was epic!
Avatar 8:07pm chresti:

Guns, I think.
Avatar 8:15pm TDK60:

I'd like to try a tar. (If anyone has one unused in the attic...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Gary:

A tar would be a feather in yr cap?
Avatar 8:21pm tim abdellah:

Whoa - what is this? Is there any info about it with the album?
Avatar 8:22pm chresti:

Tar is four string.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Gary:

Oh My Gosh! There's a LOT of info about it! Tim, you need this book/4-CD set, seriously! Lemme see if I can find out what it's saying about this track ...
Avatar 8:23pm chresti:

en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 8:24pm TDK60:

Thanks chresti.
Avatar 8:25pm chresti:

I wouldn't mind having a Dotār.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Gary:

So, Tim, this is a poem by 9th century Persian poet Ferdowsi; it's the national epic of Iran and according to this text, the longest poem by a single poet. "Cast here as an exercise routine." Recorded in Tehran, 1955
Avatar 8:27pm TDK60:

That looks groovy too, chresti. I also wouldn't mind a Turkish tanbur, and a sarod too. And a hurdy-gurdy while we're at it.
Avatar 8:28pm chresti:

Abso-Lute-ly, TDK60
Avatar 8:28pm TDK60:

hoo! that too..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Gary:

TBH I imagined all frequent WFMU listeners had hurdy-gurdies prominently displayed in their living rooms. This is just my imagination & not true?
Avatar 8:29pm northguineahills:

Do we have any Parsi music (the Zoroastrians who fled Iran for India [mostly now in India near Goa to the Pakistani border). during the Islam invasion)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Gary:

NGH! I do have some on CD, but haven't ripped it yet :(
Avatar 8:31pm tim abdellah:

Thanks Gary - very cool! I see the album is available on Bandcamp for $10 as a download. Will put it on my wishlisht! Sez the CD came with reproductions of Bhattacharya's original recording notes! I wonder if the digital edition comes with a pdf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Gary:

Maybe? But, dang, I would get the book if I were you. It's got a lot of notes about this trip that you're not going to wanna miss

Avatar 8:34pm TDK60:

Gary, Tim, sounds like quite a compilation.
Avatar 8:35pm tim abdellah:

Very cool - did you see my post this week about the Paul Bowles Morocco recordings/notes? Sounds similar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Gary:

Tim, I just took a photo of Bhattacharya's notes on the track of interest -- emailing it to you now -- this book is filled with this stuff!

Hey Gary, tell the people what zendegi means!
  8:56pm LRSN:

It means LIFE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Gary:

Zendegi is a science fiction novel by Australian author Greg Egan and goddammit, LRSN, it EXPLORES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN!
Avatar 8:57pm tim abdellah:

There was an interview recently broadcast on KPFA out here with Nahid Siamdoust, about her book "Soundtrack of the Revolution: The Politics of Music in Iran". Super interesting, about government policy regarding music post-revolution in Iran, and how it's been negotiated over time. The book sounds really interesting. Dates from 2017: soundcloud.com...

LRSN, so nice to see you, man! I have no idea, I just cut and pasted it from the internet ... like everything else :)

Hard to underestimate Dire Straights' influence on international pop I guess
Avatar 9:48pm tim abdellah:

They're basically responsible for the whole Sahara guitar thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gary:

True! And also I have misspelled them: Dire Straits
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Gary:

I remember the first time hearing them on the bus going to or coming from high school and thinking: "So cold, so clean"
Avatar 9:51pm tim abdellah:

Yeah - I remember "Sultans of Swing" being on the radio and thinking "meh"...
