The original MASH film by Robert Altman is fantastic. The TV series had its ups and downs, the early seasons with Henry Blake and Trapper were actually funnier, but that series finale is very, very well done and emotional. Probably the best scene in the series apart from the finale was Radar announcing Blake's death.

  12:01pm DG:

Yes, M. Feld----mixed feelings about the Hall. As far as who gets in/got in, it's a joke---ABBA & Jay-Z have nothing to do with R&R, while bands that embody the spirit of R&R, like Los Lobos, NRBQ, etc. are ignored. The Go-Go's are looong overdue (as well as the Bangles, although the GG's were chart-toppers 1st), as well as the Dolls (for influence, if not sales). That said, I heard the actual museum is good & maybe one day I'll get there...we were in Memphis a year and a half ago, & I'd certainly recommend Sun Studios & Graceland for rock history/artifacts. In fact, Graceland now has other buildings full of different exhibits, which I think change from time to time. We saw Buddy Holly's suit & a drawing of Elvis a young Hendrix did after one of his concerts.

Altman had his 14 year old son compose the lyrics to Johnny Mandel's MASH theme song. The kid ended up with millions in royalties, his father made like 30k as the director. It's sung on the soundtrack by The Ron Hicklin singers.

I was surprised to see in a documentary that the Go-Gos were as tough if not even tougher than the Bangs in the early days. You don't hear that toughness on the IRS records until the 3rd record, Talk Dhow, when the band was disintegrating. ("Turn To You" remains one of my favorite numbers.) I liked the Go-Gos but thought, "oh, neat, girls." With "All Over The Place" my first reaction to the Bangles was "dayum, THESE are bad bitches with guitars."
  12:06pm DG:

Not true about MASH, many episodes had no laugh track, apparently, & I thought they got rid of it in later seasons. Also they didn't use it in OR scenes.

  12:29pm Kpx:

It was suggested that it would nice to go out and get some takeout food, the problem there is what a lot of people don't realize is that it's another good way of contracting covid-19, or God who knows what else. When you think about it you don't know who's preparing your food and just how sanitary they are, I mean they're talking while preparing your food and spittle leaves their mouth and they sweat on it, etc. And that's just by accident. and then you have the a-holes that deliberately contaminate your food. So you never really know.

JJ says you sweat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm northguineahills:

It's a mild 74F/22C and rainy down here....
  12:51pm Tim:

NRBQ...way overdue
  12:51pm Morphe':

NOLA - might be redundant, but NOLA HOUSE FLOARS..
  12:52pm Yuri Weber:

More snow on the way!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm northguineahills:

Kraftwerk isn't in the Rock & Roll Hall in Fame (just saying). It's a rather biased affair, but I agree NRBQ is long overdue.
  12:52pm clarke:

Yard-y Gras is in full "steam"
  12:53pm davefromtoronto:

NRBQ? omg you've got to be joking. they're like every average bar band
i've ever heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm DJ Johnny Cool:

There is no trumpet in this song.
  12:53pm egould310:

It’s snowing like crazy here in Seattle. I’m loving it. Gonna walk down to Mike’s Chili Parlor for lunch.
Avatar 12:53pm Joe B:

Chaka Kahn is a million times more important, sorry. different stratosphere above nrbq
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm northguineahills:

Not that I know what Rock and Roll is.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Handy Haversack:

Are Matt Fiveash and Nate K. doing a MG show this week?
  12:53pm clarke:

no. you've got to be kidding.
  12:54pm ledzeppelinsucks:

I saw thousands of bands in Bay Area at Great American Music Hall, The Omni, Bottom of The Hill, Golden Bull, Slims, Paradise, DNA Lounge, The Stone, Fox Theatre, The Trocadero, Phoenix Theatre, Fillmore, Thirsty Swede, Starry Poughkeepsie, Berkeley Square, Gilman Street and most of them kicked ass. I avoid hippie shit and construction worker music and cover bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm McGroovey:

Wait. Shouldn't that have been a trumpet solo, not a guitar solo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Not like it's a Contest
...so - we'll make it one...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm northguineahills:

(I blame WFMU...😁)
  12:54pm Listener Bop Monroe:

you can't be shy with a trumpet.
that was a quick 2 hours.
thnx again Mr. MS!
be safe all.
takata ta-ta!
  12:54pm Sean:

Cut Across Shorty!
  12:55pm Yuri Weber:

Bottom of the Hill! Loved that place. I played there a bunch of times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Hughie Considine:

Well cut off my legs and call me Shorty .... people used to say that.
Avatar 12:55pm Cat:

Thanks, Michael, for another swell show. You belong in the RnR HoF!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If like me you've needed to update your Radio Free Americana stream - here it is :
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Squints:

What's "construction worker music?"
  12:56pm Listener Bop Monroe:

what is 'construction worker music'...?
you mean 'industrial'?
  12:56pm clarke:

people also used to say: ever get the feeling u been cheated??? goo'nite.
  12:56pm davefromtoronto:

NRBQ have NO great songs - they couldn't put out a greatest hits single...
  12:56pm Frank Zaatar:

No, NRBQ is the Platlonic ideal of every bar band you've ever heard.
  12:57pm clarke:

yet hilton head island is still okay??? riiiighht.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Squints:

FZ, I like that. "Of all the Charlie Browns, they're the Charlie Browniest."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Montmaster J:

Q=pure joy. Real Q or fake Q.
Avatar 12:57pm Ross T.:

Great show as always Michael. Gotta say the highlight was the Jackson Browne barber joke. I could see Seinfeld stealing the bit. "So what's the deal with Jackson Browne's hair. How would you like to be his barber..."
  12:57pm Listener Bop Monroe:

but that'll be one TASTY butterfly.
Avatar 12:57pm Michael Shelley:

dft - very wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Hughie Considine:

Michael, your show is just stars after stars after stars ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Handy Haversack:

Gah, time! It always takes me by surprise. I never pay the bill, but they won't seem to cut it off.

Thanks, Michael! Loads of number one fun, as always!

Thanks, Ruth -- see you in the next time slot.

Be well, Shelle Gamers. Have number one weeks! We'll be attending the Tristen streaming concert tomorrow from Nashville, and maybe the Sylvain Sylvain tribute as well. Maybe see some of you there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Used to think NRBQ were like the Dead scene for Club people... I'm just getting schooled. Apparently Mr. Hendrix was fond of them...
TY DJ MichaelShelley !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Corey:

Thanks Michael for the great two hours of music! Thanks skeletons! Take care all.
  12:58pm Gerry from Miami:

Don't sweat the R&R Hall of Fame, Michael. NRBQ is just one of dozens of artists who are worthy of induction. But the politics of said institution will forever leave out deserving musicians and continue to induct ones who are "questionable." That list of qualifications you read is like the US Consfitution, subject to interpretation.
  12:58pm davefromtoronto:

name some great classics by NRBQ...i'll wait
Avatar 12:58pm Joe B:

glad to see Q referring to a band in a discussion for a change!
  12:58pm Yuri Weber:

Great show MS, I should listen more often.
Avatar 12:58pm Joe B:

@dave - ridin' in my car
  12:59pm DG:

Whaaaat? "Riding in my Car"? "Me and the Boys"? "I Want You Bad"? Bonnie Raitt & Dave Edmunds obviously like their songs.
Avatar 12:59pm Ross T.:

NRBQ haters just being provocative....
  12:59pm Morphe':

Thanks Mike and all !!!!!
"...Both in door and out door ..."
  12:59pm ledzeppelinsucks:

Construction worker music is Foreigner, Sammy Fagarosmith, Ozzy, Loverboy, Kansas and similar trash.
  12:59pm Andres:

Q should only ever refer to Quincy Jones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm juan:

thanks for a great show Michael and Skeleton Crew!
be well everyone
  12:59pm Sean:

Russian trolls, can't you tell.
Avatar 12:59pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...gadgets for Bond...
  1:00pm ledzeppelinsucks:

thanks for the show
  1:00pm davefromtoronto:

i guess we have different definitions of great classics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Squints:

Gadgets For Bond would be a great band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Fascists are never original.
  1:01pm clarke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm McGroovey:

@northguineahills Lakeshore Records. It was on Park Ave around the corner from my house.

There are at least 3 great record store that are still going there.

Record Archive: It's huuuuge. Huge selection of used records, and other music-related stuff. It used to be in a big yellow wooden building near UofR, but now it's in a warehouse on University Ave (which has no university on it) on the east side.

House of Guitars: the place will make you crazy, because it's so disorganized, but they have just about every record and every guitar ever made. On Titus Ave in Irondequoit.

The Bop Shop, formerly in the city on Goodman, now just outside the city in Brighton on Monroe Ave. Rob Filardo, owner of the Garage Pop label, works there. My friend nicknamed him Every Band because he played drums or bass in most of the best bands, including the Quitters, the Grinders, the Priests, ...

Can't go there now. Thanks, COVID.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm McGroovey:

I just realized that while I was writing that, the show ended.
  5:10pm Bob:

Whenever I hear the db's I just invariably want to like it more than I do. It just sounds thin and unremarkable mostly. It's not important.
