I was amazingly lucky back in college to have heard a duet between Milford Graves and Andrew Cyrille (with an African percussion and dance troupe as the opening act). In fact, I think part of this concert was released as Dialogue of the Drums (1974).

I listened to the Corbett & Dempsey reissue of this record and was surprised at just how unrelenting it was. Later, Pullen would temper the chaotic portions with beautiful lyricism or even humor. Here it is really avant-garde crashing all the way through.

Correction: I'm not absolutely sure the duet of Graves & Cyrille I heard live is the one recorded on Dialogue of the Drums. The performance I heard was at NYU Loeb Student Center while DoD seems to have been recorded at Columbia. But I did really hear them both live. Also I much later I heard Milford Graves with John Zorn.

When I was in college and shortly after, I was a big Return to Forever fan. However, with age, all the notes began to wear me down. I still find it strange that Chick could play that, along with Circle, standard jazz piano trio, Latin compositions, etc., excelling at all of them. Or maybe not so surprised that he could as that he would.

Just listening quietly in bed, Bluetooth headphones, digging the show. Particularly liked hearing Pullen, big fan from way back. Interesting how he pared back guys "out" playing later for a "post bop" style, but kept enough to have that distinctive style.

@RevRabbitt. It's interesting that Corea was so interested in Spanish harmonies and Latin rhythms. I feel like most of his compositions are mostly notable rhythmically, although "Tones for Joan's Bones" was very influential for its harmony. And "Matrix" is a witty abstraction on the blues.

My baby actually cares about both shows and clothes. But not cars nor races. The occasional high-toned place.

Frank's control of his instrument (...here) - unequivocally awesome

Move the party over here: wfmu.org...
