A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@βrian: when I'm able to cook, I feel more like Julie Chile (minus the voice). Stuck w/ leftover pizza hut (I wish I had a kitchen, my kitchenware, and spices). Most 'restaurant' food kills my gut.

I've some good single-pot cooking when in camping mode. It involved a lot of effort, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am northguineahills:

@βrian: Juilia Child actually did a children's record w/ an orchestra, called, "Tubby the Tuba". (why, yes, I have it).

I never noticed famous people unless they were at a concert, so, no Dafoe sighting (been holed up almost a year anyways)
Avatar 9:54am βrian:

@NGH: I think of you when I reach for the red pepper flakes, but 7yrOld has her eye on me. "Not too shpicy!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Trouble:

bonjour @peter! i have been thinking about you lots: how is life in the classroom? we watched 'the chambermaid' (2018 la camarista) for my film club this week, it was fabulous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am northguineahills:

@βrian: When i was 6, I discovered Tabasco. I never looked back....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am northguineahills:

been collecting chilies and spices from the Thai restaurant across the street to make other food palatable.
  9:58am Peter in SEA:

@trouble. It's next to impossible to remain 6' away. We are hybrid, week on in-person, week off in remote, this week remote, and there are always 6-8 students that will always be remote so navigating between students in the room and those on the big screen from home is...challenging... And then there's the issue of supplies to in school and those always remote...Vaccines probably by the end of the month out here. Onward and Upward with the Arts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Trouble:

frontier co-op has this fab blend called turmeric twist: turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon. sweet with a little kick. try that in hot chocolate! snap

speedy vaccine to you @ peter! i have zero idea when i might get it, even though i am 1b as an educator.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Trouble:

@peter: i was hoping we would be back in the classroom before the end of the year. at this point, who knows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am northguineahills:

@trouble fingers crossed; it is wonderful to see the students but we are not in the art studio :-( it's not designed for 20 students 6' apart in desks, so I am on a cart..:-/ yeah..."challenging"
Avatar 10:06am Listening Out There:

@Peter: "Art in a cart"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Trouble and trouble makers!
  10:08am Peter in SEA:

Hey @waters7! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Trouble:

so sorry to hear @peter. for me it's all about supporting the students, art is second to that right now. sometimes that's painful.
Avatar 10:09am βrian:

@NGH: She does have bold tastes, in some regards: pickled herring, kalamata olives and the accompanying brine, etc. But she balks at significant picante-ness.

And she extravagantly praises my hot chocolate, and that always has some cinnamon and cayenne. So she's making progress.

The only grid drawing I've done before was statistical graphs (had graph paper since elementary school).

I am constantly in danger of forgetting about Abbey Lincoln and Arto Lindsay, so I really appreciate your playing them.
Avatar 10:20am Listening Out There:

@Peter, et al: Art in a Cart should not of course be confused with Sheep in a Jeep....("Beep beep, sheep in a jeep on a hill that's steep...")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am bigkafka:

seconding, listener g about arto. i always think of DNA and that sort of thing and forget about his lovely later brazilian stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Mick:

What a beautiful start to the show this morning! "Brought to you by the letter A" When I heard the Abbey Lincoln i thought "well, I'm going to need to visit the chat today..."

Great to see the shot of Simone Leigh in the studio too - love her work on the high line plinth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Trouble:

gracias@mick. @listener gregory/bigkafka: i love arto and abbey's voices so much. i could listen every day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I wasn't particularly familar with Abby Lincoln but then she put out a record that had Pat Metheny on it. Folks told me that she wasn't in particularly fine form on that one (I loved her voice there) so I started looking backward. Oh yes...!
  10:26am Peter in SEA:

arto lindsay's story is interesting. I wonder what's up with his old Modern Lovers' partner Peter Scherer....? That's where I first heard him, NYC 1987(?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am northguineahills:

missed this Arto album....

Arto did grow up in Brazil.

He once commented me on a gory Dinosaur Jr tee....
Avatar 10:27am Listening Out There:

@WoodsOfNH: Look for her duet recording with Hank Jones, When There Is Love (1993). Great voice, wonderful piano....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Listening Out There: Will do. And the album I was referring to is A Turtle's dream.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am LastVisibleDog:

what a gorgeous track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am northguineahills:

The Apartments, not to be confused w/ the Apartment Ensemble....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Irene Trudel:

WoodsOfNH, I found the same thing when I first heard Abby on our local jazz station, vocally very flat. It was a tune from very late in her career. My husband urged me to go back to her earlier albums and I was transformed. I especially love Lincoln's work on (then husband) Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

There are definitely voices that I can use a dose of every single day: Abbey Lincoln, Edith Piaf, Nina Simone, Cassandra Wilson...
  10:37am alan the painter:

Well, there you are. Having trouble keeping up my stream. moved my act around placing my speaker mouth atop the ole air duct for added bass. So happy to have you, Trouble, focusing my mindscape. thank you for this stream of consciousness.
  10:37am Androu B.:

  10:43am Androu B.:

I wonder how many versions of "The First Cut" there has ever been recorded in all of music history so far. I know of the Eurythmics version and the most famous hit version by a particular country singer that i'm not particular about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am unpopularfred:

@Androu B. - P. P. Arnold was first, I believe, and best, I also believe.
I had Rod Stewart pegged as most famous, but that's the world I live in
  10:48am Joey joe joe:

@Androu—dozens and dozens I think. My first memory is Rod Stewart (!) from me ma, but I’ve also heard a couple old reggae versions. Putting looking up original on the day’s to-do list.

Hey Listener Gregory - Howdy! - Did we ever cross paths? My apologies if we've met or talked before and I don't remember. Re: returning to Champaign. It's highly unlikely. I was there from 2006-2018. It's a perfectly fine place. I particularly enjoyed having access to the university cultural perks. The lack of water, hills, trees and nature in central Illinois really got me down. I lived in Michigan until age 33. Easy access to nature was a big part of my life. Where I live currently I can see 3 different mountain ranges, I'm minutes away from complete immersion in nature. I see seals, migrating birds and running salmon regularly. Plus I'm a ferry ride away from Seattle. I'd love to be back in the midwest someday but I'm more keen on northern midwest. How about you?

@WoodsofNH- that's super cool! I was fortunate to have seen Allison Kraus twice, but not Nora Jones. Someday.

@Brian - Grand Rapids until 18, them Kalamazoo until 33.

@Gregory - Was it WEFT? I think WEFT unfortunately went under a few years ago. My good buddy in Champaign worked at the Highdive, Cafe Espresso and went to all the shows in the 90s so we may have some mutual connections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Trouble We didn't have it either, but signed up for HBO Max just for this. Turns out, there is a _ton_ over other stuff on there. (To add to the other tons of stuff everywhere these days)
Avatar 11:15am Listener Gregory:

@tim from champaign, yes it was WEFT. Sorry to hear that it has died. It was a great outlet for local dj's and to hear jazz and blues.
Avatar 11:17am still b/p:

If Bob Ross was still around, having him guest on Lurie's series would be great. Or terrible. I haven't seen the show, but Lurie specifically and sourly challenges Ross's painting attitude.

@still b/p: If you see the show, he's sort of joking...goes on to list a bunch of celebs who thought they could paint but couldn't. The show is pretty open-hearted. And hilarious.

@Tim--this whole album is great. I like the rest of MM, but the first album is on par with Rock Bottom, it's incredible.

@WoodsOfNH. So goes the eternal struggle: musicians that want to be painters vs painters that wish to be musicians....geez, make up your mind LOL. Joni Mitchell nearly pulled it off though.

@Emory - An even finer line is musicians who think they're novelists or poets and visa versa. The bottom of the barrel is actors who think they're musicians. **coughJohnnyDeppcough***

Trouble, I also lived in Providence (and Cranston) '82-'90, but I only saw Sun Ra in a concert at the park. That was memorable, however.

@Handy I, too, am in a metadata webinar! Suspect it is not the same as you. Trouble plays music for metadata.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am unpopularfred:

@ Webhamster Henry - I was once in a wedding band, and we would sometimes play a bossa nova version of "I wanna be sedated" during the dinner set if we ran out of songs.
I also once worked it in as the bows music for a play I wrote the music for, which had included the original reording

Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt in the same program. Both pivotal to the change in my teenage musical taste. When I was growing up, on Long Island, I would stay up late listening to the radio. There was a college station, somewhere in CT, that first introduced me to their music and I haven't been the same since. Wish I could remember the name of that station.

But that's all right, I'm sure it'll get fixed soon enough and I always have web. I only recently discovered WFMU (via Steve Guttenberg youtube video) and am simply in Love! A true music lover's heaven. So inspiring music and always so fresh! Really really helps with keeping mind at ease too, as there's always some new sweet music for brain to decipher
