Listener comments!

Avatar 9:24am Ursula1000:

In 1990, I got a cassette from a friend who had just got back from London. It had what I later found out to be the first show on the now legal radio station Kiss FM (they were a pirate station before). I was obsessed with this tape, trying to hunt down all the tracks and reading The Face and i-D religiously keeping up with the burgeoning scene that kick started with Acid House. Tons on tasty jams like the neo soul movement headed by Soul II Soul, acid jazz, sampledelic house from S'Express and Bomb The Bass. The list goes on...
Enjoy this 2 hour trip of tracks inspired by this killer tape!
  10:40am 3AMeternal:

Good timing @ursula1000 . Because it's exactly 30 years this week that the KLF were on the number 1 spot in the UK charts with 3AM Eternal
Avatar 10:50am Ursula1000:

Ooh that's right! It was meant to be!
  12:02pm Martinibomb:

Hiya Ursula!!
Avatar 12:03pm Ursula1000:

hey MB!

I'm arranging my house for a Pinball table while I listen.

This is exactly what I want to listen to right now.
Avatar 12:08pm Ursula1000:

aw thanks Kat!!!!
Avatar 12:14pm Mr Fab:

Can I get all hipster and say “I was there!” Not in London, I mean I was all about this kinda shizzle, along with the Golden Age hip-hop that was also going on. The sampler was the most exciting instrument one could “play.”
Avatar 12:15pm Ursula1000:

Hey Fab! Yep---same! I was so turned on to all of this!
Avatar 12:18pm solo mon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Otis Fodder:

Seated doing a bit of a new jack swing with my feet, still going to the bar to get another smart drink if an electric slide starts to happen. However, for a hammer dance, I will see your pants and raise you a hammer pant.
Avatar 12:18pm Ursula1000:

hi Solo!
Avatar 12:19pm Ursula1000:

do it Otis...do it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Otis Fodder:

Really, I'm just still stuck doing the cabbage patch with my arms and telling bald headed granny jokes in front of a 7-11 with my boones farm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Otis Fodder:

Oh, and watching Hollywood Shuffle. AGAIN!
Avatar 12:21pm Ursula1000:

love that description Otis! being transported as we speak
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Otis Fodder:

I was 20 in 1990, same references for sure. When that first Soul II Soul album came out, it was a revelation, those beats. Buffalo Stance had the same effect. Along with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis in 1990. Oh, snap (but please not the power), it's Tom's Diner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Otis Fodder:

I kid, I know all the lyrics to I've got the Power. I stand beside, there are no guilty pleasures.
Avatar 12:25pm Ursula1000:

totally--plus that first Massive Attack album--so much goodness from that time. where were u living then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Otis Fodder:

For SF bay area folks who may be reading, this reminds me of listening to Cameron Paul on KMEL mixing it up and clubs City Nights and the Palladium.
Avatar 12:26pm Mr Fab:

I loved “I got the power”! “It’s getting, it’s getting, it’s getting kinda hectic”

The days when everything had the “Funky Drummer” beat. Even Sinead OConnor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Otis Fodder:

1990 living in the SF bay area, around in a few places (Concord, Oakland).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Otis Fodder:

Funky Drummer everywhere. Sometimes Cold Sweat too. Never get tired of the core breaks.
Avatar 12:28pm solo mon:

Looooooove loose ends!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Otis Fodder:

Me too!
Avatar 12:28pm Ursula1000:

I was in Miami Beach pretty much living in a bubble with this stuff alongside my crew of anglophile club kids.
Avatar 12:31pm Mr Fab:

This stuff was all over LA- clubs, bars, both commercial and public radio. It wasn’t even underground, really. A strange rare feeling of actually being somewhat connected to the mainstream for a change, haha.
Avatar 12:33pm Ursula1000:

Miami's club scene was weird---house music to an extent but a LOT of industrial/goth-y stuff at the alternative spots
Avatar 12:37pm Feldpausch:

MTV absolutely LOVED Neneh Cherry when this video released
Avatar 12:37pm Mr Fab:

Huh, I would not have thought that Miami would be big on goth/industrial. Figured it was more of a Latin scene. What with the Sound Machine and all.
Avatar 12:37pm Ursula1000:

love this video--bit the one for Manchild is sublime..!
Avatar 12:38pm solo mon:

Wot is he like????

Avatar 12:49pm Mr Fab:

Ha, they censored “pass the Heineken and mind your business”
Avatar 12:53pm Ursula1000:

haha right? I love how Snoop's smokin' endo line gets censored too---tho I have a radio edit that replaces it w a bong inhale sound which I kinda like better than the OG!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Otis Fodder:

In the bay area we had Juanito FX doing 2 Freshmixes that were pretty amazing + EFX mixes, but those were never as mainstream as these 2. I'm racking my brain, flashing back 30 years. LOVE THIS.

Avatar 1:16pm Ursula1000:

MB--sadly I never had a 303 but have a pretty good clone
Avatar 1:16pm solo mon:

None of this stuff is available on streaming either. For ya know reason.
Avatar 1:18pm Mr Fab:

MB, you get your 303, I’ll attached my Akai sampler to a midi keyboard so I can sam-, sam-, sample things. Who’s on the wicki-wicki-scratch turntables?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Otis Fodder:

I'll cut, send me stems.
Avatar 1:19pm Ursula1000:

someone posted earlier in the thread that this week marks 30 years since KLF's 3AM Eternal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Otis Fodder:

FAB/Martini - Do it. Ursula & Solo on stems as well. Sheena DJs collab for a marathon thing in the future?
Avatar 1:22pm Ursula1000:

I'm down!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Otis Fodder:

Great, let's connect where the slack runs deep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Otis Fodder:

The White Room got me moving. Chill Out had me floating. The Manual had me cracking up and loving.
Avatar 1:24pm Mr Fab:

This all can’t possibly be 30 years old?! Honestly doesn’t seem that long ago. Weird time travel thing going on here.
Avatar 1:25pm Ursula1000:

I know---30 sounds insane!
Avatar 1:26pm Ursula1000:

Otis--yeah The Manual was hilarious! Want a top 10 hit? Just add water!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Otis Fodder:

Loved it. I remember it must have been about 1996 when I discovered it online and it took me forever to print it on my dot matrix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Otis Fodder:

I've clicky starred a lot today. While it does not seem like 30 years... at the same time it seems like 60 years if that makes sense.
Avatar 1:29pm Ursula1000:

Not sure where I got mine--either from them or one of the few import record shops that could've carried it
Avatar 1:29pm Esther Crow:

HOLY SHIT. I love THE GOOD LIFE!!!! FAVE SONG! (omg Alex I was on REGULAR WFMU for the first 1/2 hour and was scratching my head. LOL. no wonder I was confused! this is NOT Ursula 10000 I kept saying! then I had to run errands but now I'm here. I'll have to listen to the whole thing another time!!!!!!

One of my all time favorites, the first album set the controls for the heart of the bass is a whole fire!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Rich in Washington:

I'd never heard of Bassomatic before either. It's very Jack Dangers-esque in terms of production
Avatar 1:34pm Mr Fab:

I used to tape William Orbit’s mixes off his KCRW show - Madge used em as the basis for her album.
Avatar 1:34pm Ursula1000:

he did stuff for KCRW? crazy
Avatar 1:35pm Mr Fab:

Coldcut! They did some cool “pump up the volume”-type sample fests.

Ursula, this bug is catching on. Now I want to pull out some mid-late 80s dance megamix/remix stuff for next week. Your flashbacks are very friendly!
Avatar 1:37pm Mr Fab:

Messiah! Yeah. I’m thinking “No More Lies” by Michel’le. This show is reminding me of stuff I hadn’t thought of in ages.
