Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Handy Haversack:

There's an actual cement mixer outside our bldg., and the driver is just leaning on his horn to somehow point out that traffic should move again. Secret weapon. Holy crap, the failure of everything.

Hey, HyperDose. That's an excellent question. I might have to juice some limes to get away from this noise.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, Fabio and all. I believe the Telefunken handbook defines stereo as bimodal failure.

Fabio thanks for all the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Listener Howard. Thanks for the explanation! I don't know if I've seen any but I have definitely seen 90s/00s throwbacks to those.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm mariano:

Heya Fabio, Crew, radio chums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm steveo:

Fabio, thanks for doing your show. I know it's tough but it just sounds like regular from here and regular is good.
  3:42pm Zetti:

Hanzo the Razor 2 The Snare has a great soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Listener Howard & the Cats:

@Tim - Tarantino has def included homages to some. "Female Yakuza Tale", "Sex & Fury", the "Girl Boss / Sukeban Buruusu" series, and the " Female Prisoner #701" series are maybe the best known/easiest to find? They're lots of fun!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Handy Haversack:

For consumption cold, Carmichael?
  3:48pm Miss G:

I didn't hear who this is, but the music has a sense of dread commensurate with the wiring issues of the Hotbox in this full moon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Miss G - I'm guessing it's La Tene related.
  3:50pm Zetti:

I should add a warning.

The Hazo series of films may be offensive to some. This is extremely harsh exploitation.
  3:50pm Morgan:

@msG Is it one of those really big full moons
  3:52pm Miss G:

@Morgan if you mean visually, last night I couldn't see as it was snowing. It is a "big deal" if you follow astrology at all.
Avatar 3:54pm Chris from DC:

  3:55pm Miss G:

Tim from Champaign - La Tène and Maranha on same label, is that it?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Carmichael:

@Handy, I brought it up to room temperature. And no anchovies, sadly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Listener Howard & the Cats:

That sorta reminded me of the music from LORDS OF SALEM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Miss G - upon actually doing some internet machine research, it looks like LaTene and David Maranha are unrelated. I was making a guess based on the mesmerizing plodding drone sounds both share.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Miss G - A-ha! I see the connection you made now! Very cool. Please don't listen to me in the future :)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:03pm chresti:

Whatever is happening in the hotbox, the sounds are good over here. Will continue listening and commenting from our respective nutty hotboxes
  4:03pm Miss G:

@Tim oh, no, I'm so happy you spoke up because I'm going to check out La Tène and their 2018 <hurdy-gurdy/harmonium/percussions trio welcomes two bagpipes (cabrettes and 23” to be exact), and a combo of string instruments (12-string guitar and electric bass).> wow!

Cloris was great--she was beautiful and had a kind of vulnerability about her
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Miss G - Cool! I first heard La Tene on Fabio and Bryce's show. If you liked David Maranha you will absolutely dig La Tene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Niall:

Kiss me deadly. The audio from that movie's ending still haunts me

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

But Morgan - who was better than her @ it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I remember that scene now. Fabio's not kidding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I just requested Kiss Me Deadly and Last Picture Show from my local library.
  4:12pm WM:

Bogdonivich made two films before LPS - Targets and (uncredited) Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women. (I don’t think even Cloris Leachman could have done much with that one.)
Avatar 4:13pm Lixiviated Life:

The scene youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm northguineahills:

I saw Bertolucci's "1900" (1975) (director's cut), 5.5 hours (took two weekends to finish). Couldn't find an Italian version (found it on Hulu), so, the English dub was clumsy. Basically, the story of socialism vs fascism, landowners vs peasants, from the late 19th c to the end of wwii. Had the most adolescent male frontal nudity since I saw Makevejev's "Sweet Movie" (also 1975)
  4:14pm Morgan:

@rabbit sure. its stunning too when you only know an actors comedies then discover they have real range
  4:14pm Failer:

94--a good age, a nice long life. Bon voyage, Cloris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

been listening since i got in awhile ago, have not had the chance to say HELLO! until now -- REALLY enjoying the music/energy (been a seriously stupid stressful day)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm tim from champaign (now washington):

That's terrible, Brian. I'm glad to hear it was a hoax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm ChukAmok:

No doubt the natural result of a bad taquito.
Avatar 4:30pm βrian:

The more imminent threat is State republicans repealing the Governor's mask mandate.
  4:30pm WM:

@Tim from Champaign: The novel LPS by Larry McMurtry is better than the film by Bogdanovich, LPS was B's best movie precisely because it was based on a good novel.
Avatar 4:31pm slugluv1313:

@ Brian -- holy crap! glad you are okay, but still -- WTF!!!
  4:31pm Failer:

I love when my office has to be evacuated...

I also loved Cloris Leachman in Lovers and Other Strangers.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm chresti:

Wow, βrian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm ChukAmok:

Ugh. And then all the taquito breath will be free to mingle with the regular, fresh air. Hail to the mask!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Handy Haversack:

Oof, βrian, what a thing.
  4:32pm Failer:

Evacuation is good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm ChukAmok:

At least you live in a state where there is a mask mandate.
  4:32pm Failer:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm ChukAmok:

There was one here, but people either ignored it or sued to get out of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I am full of Liberal guilt for ignoring the Big Gulp rage lo these decades...
  4:33pm Morgan:

ah what i wouldn’t give for a good old fashioned bomb threat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm northguineahills:

ok, reality is getting strange, βrian. 7-11? The last time I was evacuated from a bomb threat was on a BSA trip to the UK from an IRA bomb threat at a tube station. (that was '93)
Avatar 4:35pm βrian:

@Morgan: I'm sure Handy could help you out. He's quite the mixologist, I hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

For the first month or so, my own stinkbreath under the mask was terrible. It doesn't bother me anymore. Olfactory failure, I guess.
Avatar 4:36pm βrian:

Latest update: At least two local 7-elevens were targeted.
  4:36pm Morgan:

lol really i hope you’re ok brian
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Handy Haversack:

I have only found two masks that reliably don't cause my glasses to fog.

Yeesh, βrian! Save the Slurpee machines! We can pour booze in them and send to Mariano in New Orleans!
  4:38pm Failer:

Hey guys, I was wondering, are there any cocktails that include or feature ketchup or mustard. I know you all would prob. know the answer
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Handy Haversack:

Also, hi, slugluv! Sorry about your day. I was thinking mine had been sort of stupid, too, but βrian is putting it all in perspective for me.
  4:39pm Failer:

or, pickle juice
  4:40pm Failer:

Actually, I think cocktails with ketchup, mustard, or pickle juice would be total failures

  4:41pm Miss G:

In "Lover's Rock" the cinematography blew my mind! (Small Axe) so gorgeous

Yeah, we're in four out of five so far on Small Axe. All excellent so far.
Avatar 4:43pm slugluv1313:

hiya mariano! yes, Paper Moon -- another i have not seen in ages (may have seen it when i was in college, when NYC still had theaters that screened "older" movies)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm mariano:

βrian: Just catching up on posts, been busy with other stuff. Sorry to hear about that, glad you're OK.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Handy Haversack:

@Failer: Hot dogdka. Though which condiment to use as a garnish is a pretty controversial topic.
  4:43pm Miss G:

And "Silly Games" is a funny earworm to have (was watching that scene as each of my two young neighbors had a loud late party, so that was cute [I guess])
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm chris_in_space:

I always heed your film recos, @Fabio; most recently with the Lebowitz "Pretend It's a City" series.
  4:44pm Failer:

@ Handy: LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm tw2sheds:

FYI ketchup and mustard can go with anything, but not necessarily together. Or in beer.

  4:45pm David in London:

“What am I? A wabbit?” Classic Madeline Kahn.
  4:46pm WM:

I think the career of Bogdanovich proves exactly the opposite of the auteur theory - the idea that the director is the sole author of a film and can transform junk into jewels through the magic of directorial style. When he had a good story (LPS) he made a good film and when he was left on his own he just rehashed scenes from the extensive list of films he had viewed.

I gotta say, I think Scorcese is amazing in all his film endeavors but he too needs a good script; and when he gets a good script, like Taxi, look what he can do!
  4:48pm David in London:

Peter Biskin goes in pretty hard on Bogdanovich in Easy Riders, Raging Bulls as I remember. And, raw talent aside, massive amount of egomania and coke weren’t a good recipe for steady, creative highs. See also Friedkin, P.

One of the most impressive things to me about Steve McQueen is that he seems to be able to write great scripts as well as having amazing directorial skills
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Rich in Washington:

This is wonderful. It brings to mind Terry Riley's You're No Good.

Maybe a kind of test for great directors is how far can they go with a great script?

A lot.

  4:52pm David in London:

I make an exception in your case, Handy.

Rev Rabbit, I think it’s a Von Stroheim inspired myth that too many people who make films still buy into, the filmic equivalent of joining the 27 Club in rock and roll. It doesn’t have to be that way, but it often is. I saw it writ large with my cohort at film school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm mariano:

Handy: Especially if you adopt a stage name like Lionel Twain.

Davefrom BK: Always glad to be the source of yuks. It's a dangerous thing though to get Handy, David, and me started on the Withnail quotes, we're liable to wind up in the back of the van.

I have been doing IT project at Game Stop stores. Those fucking places are patronized by addicts and people in crisis. People constantly trying to sell games and many times a day women escort young men into the store to sell their console. It's the culmination of an ultimatim. Game addicts play 22 hours a day. That addiction is high overhead. An internet connection, couch, electricity and a structure to host those things is required. And there has to be an enabler paying for it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm mariano:

ledzepsucks: I play one or two games a year, I'm a fan of the non-linear open-world ones where you can wander around and do whatever you like. They can be really addictive, and when I play, I tend to binge like I do with a series I'm hooked on. Thankfully though, there are months if not a year between them. My ADHD works as a great failsafe in that regard (I'm diagnosed, not just saying I have it as some folks do).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm mariano:

DavefromBK: Oh yeah, many an intense Risk session when I was younger. Up till 4 a.m., everyone chain smoking, lifelong friends hating each other and trying to stab each other in the back with the alliances. Good times. I forget where I read this, but in every picture of Putin, his expression is that of your best friend as they're about to wipe you off the map in Risk.
