Hey, Pseu! Hooks, yay!

Good afternoon Pseu and all who are listening.
It’s a beautiful day here in Da Bronx!

Yay Besnard Lakes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm mndave:

Hi Pseu! Just noting that The Besnard Lakes at the Black Cat Red Room in 2012 was the bone-jarringly loudest show I have been to in my lifetime.

Hi Pseu! I need to go back on INDUSTRY GIANTS, didn't get into it at the time. The Lees of Memory have done some cool stuff more recently.

Good afternoon!
Avatar 12:11pm Michael Shelley:

Greetings all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm chris_in_space:

@mndave the loudest show I ever witnessed was without a doubt Sunn O))). They made My Bloody Valentine seem like pretenders.
Avatar 12:13pm Pseu Braun:

'Afternoon Hookers and friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Planet Tyler:

If y'all havent heard this great Besnard Lakes - "And this is what we call progress" - very recommend
Avatar 12:13pm HyperDose:

@chris_in_space I tried to get one of their limited edition Earthquaker pedals. There were 4 or 5 drops I think, each one sold out in minutes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm mndave:

@chris_in_space I can only imagine... TBL caught me off-guard even with plugs in. Honorable mention goes to Holly Herndon rearranging my internal organs a few months later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Gaylord Fields:

Wow! THE Tony Burrows — the five-time one-hit wonder!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Krys O.:

I seem to recall Dawn Eden interviewed Burrows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm chris_in_space:

@HyperDose: cool. First I've heard of those limited Earthquaker Sunn pedals. Guess I'll never have one.

@mndave: That would catch me off guard as well. I can't believe I used to go to shows in my early 20s without even thinking to bring plugs, as if such volume was a normal thing in life.

Avatar 12:21pm HyperDose:

@chris_in_space $70 markup on Reverb ain't bad, just hard to justify purchasing a $500 pedal. At least we have other options.
  12:23pm Andres:

Re. internal organ rearrangement - kick drums through the bass bins at festival shows. Hate it! A feeling verging on literal heart stopping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm West Trenton Vinnie:

@PT, AYWKUBTTOD fer shure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Krys O.:

Killing Joke at Fillmore East in 2008 not only rearranged my internal organs, but caused me to levitate on the decibel level.

25% Can Con so far. Exceeding CRTC regulations. Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Gaylord Fields:

MBV at ATP: The earplugs! They do nothing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm luka:

loudest band i've seen in recent memory was Nothing at Sub-T in chicago 5-6 years ago. good lord.
  12:30pm clarke:

agree, JJ - MBV - loudest ever. period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Hughie Considine:

MBV's opening acts like Dinosaur Jr. and Screaming Trees, were also incredibly loud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm listener 126464:

Hi Pseu, everyone. Apples In Stereo- loudest
  12:31pm queems:

i turned the radio up for the enrique and then east up for the pinback
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Ike:

Ah, finally, somebody is putting voice to the mood I've been in! I couldn't articulate it, but Pseu is saying what I've been thinking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm the Master:

I'm telling you, Sunn O))), for better or worse, are MUCH louder than MBV.
Avatar 12:35pm KlausVonB:

agreed MBV at Roseland back in the day was beyond intense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Hughie Considine:

To Genesis P'orridge, people puking was like a standing ovation.
  12:36pm Jeremy:

Sunn O))) rearranged my guts at Moogfest a few years ago.
Avatar 12:36pm Jay in Boston:

the most deafening show i ever saw was mogwai in 2006. it felt like someone was jabbing a pen in my ear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Spankyflop:

My ears are still ringing from a Dinosaur Jr. show 25 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Hughie Considine:

I've seen MBV and Sunn O))) - MBV were louder. MBV hurt more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

A friend of mine saw Sunn O))) in a small hall somewhere. They started and about 15 seconds in they blew the main breaker in the building. Yow!
  12:36pm KWilde:

Hey Pseu and fellow listeners!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm joe mulligan:

I love how MBV has the title for loudest show. the other I've heard is a place to bury strangers. I haven't seen either though so can't confirm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Hughie Considine:

Always loved this one, Pseu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Krys O.:

'Those people' have unfortunately been around for a long time. Do your best to fight white nationalists, fascists, and domestic terrorists.

Oh, and thanks for the Jona Lewie!
  12:38pm clarke:

the difference is that MBV actually have Songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm chris_in_space:

@clarke, ha, still debatable, but your point is a good one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Gaylord Fields:

As Pseu recalls, that MBV show was like being jabbed nonstop with fungo bats throughout your body by the starting 9 of a major league baseball team, with no possible escape. Body aches ensued, and I checked for bruises afterwards.
  12:39pm egould310:

Fugazi at the Newport Theater, Columbus, OH. October 1990? The freaking loudest show ever. For a band that was using dynamics on their recordings; that night it was just loud ad hell. Nauseatingly loud. Permanent hearing loss loud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Jason from Houston:

Here to say Wolf Eyes in a medium sized venue was close to "I may need to leave" scary. Even with good earplugs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Hughie Considine:

I didn't want to say it, clarke. That is a key difference. Then again, MBV didn't have monk habits.
  12:40pm clarke:

mister hunsecker says you sweat!
  12:40pm Andres:

Nels Cline band festival set closer I saw had peoples heads down on picnic tables covering their ears. Because it was that good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Chop Scott:

MBV at ATP was insanely loud--the room at Kutcher's felt like it was going to lift off.
  12:40pm Stephen:

Motörhead at the place in Old Bridge. W the Supersuckers. He dropped his guitar on the floor at the end of the set and walked off stage for entire break until encore with feedback just grinding down everyone’s teeth. Don’t think it was Fast Eddie though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Gaylord Fields:

@clarke: With my Jersey City brains?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Krys O.:

Breet! Such a nice guy. He just had a birthday on January 11th.
  12:44pm clarke:

a cookie full of arsenic, Fields!!
Avatar 12:47pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

MBV weren't too quiet at Maxwell's either, but I think Dinosaur Jr. may have topped them.
Avatar 12:47pm Hoboken Pete:

Tough to know who was loudest that I saw, but MBV, Dinosaur Jr, and Motorhead were at the top of my list. Also Boris was pretty thumping..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Dennis Diken:

nice to hear The Breetles. geez, I started playing with Chris Breetveld in...gulp...1978!
Avatar 12:51pm mb:

G'afternoon peeps. Pseu Pseu!
Avatar 12:52pm Pseu Braun:

can't even imagine mbv playing maxwells. At the stadium volumes, that entire block of washington street would have collapsed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Krys O.:

Yowza, Dennis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm p/b:

Hi FMUworld and the Devine Miss Pseu - dealing with some shite but all here and LOVE this Dire Straits cover, sounds beautiful. Always loved this song, used to make me cry, one of those. Don't tell anyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm West Trenton Vinnie:

Avatar 12:58pm Hoboken Pete:

I love that this cover by widowspeak is getting a lot of airtime on this station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm steveo:

oh well now this is Pseu isn't it. i'm not sure that set was very hooky, but i enjoyed it nonetheless
Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Listener Paul:

Loud shows: John Zorn at the Painted Bride in Philly in the late 80s was painful. And though it probably wasn't loud for everyone, for some reason I stood right next to the speakers at a Stevie Ray Vaughn/Marshall Crenshaw/Dave Edmunds show at Convention Hall in Asbury Park and probably did some damage that night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Stevel:

Pseu: You're speaking my mind today. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm joe mulligan:

@Paul that must have been his Naked City outfit? My loudest was the Swans at club revival philly during their children of god tour around '88 or '89. so loud they blew the power out during the show and that's where I got tinnitus. Damn you Michael Gira!
Avatar 1:05pm treehugger:

YES! YES! YES! Dire Straits is so horrible!!!
Good cover, however.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm myron feld:

Todd was a Maxwell's macher.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm PortsmouthJay:

I saw Air Miami at Brownie's in 1994.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm joe mulligan:

@Paul yeah there was a lotta screechin and a screamin then!

Avatar 1:16pm Michael Shelley:

I once opened for Dino Jr @ CBGB - without doubt: loudest band I ever saw. Guitar was so loud - couldnt hear the snare drum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm West Trenton Vinnie:

conversely, tragic death aside, Elliott Smith was barely amplified last I saw him perform, seemed as intentional artistically as a blaring barrage
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Niall:

Ah, East River Pipe. Williamsburg's first ambassador.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Hughie Considine:

Also, Mr. Cornog is the only writer I know of to salute my hometown of Tenafly in song, in "Down 42nd Street to the Light."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Niall:

Joe Mulligan: you're in good company with my friends, most of who've asserted that Swans played the loudest shows they'd attended (My Bloody Valentine has almost as many votes). For me, it was Marianne Amacher in 1999. Instant tinnitus and nausea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Ike:

That screeching and "now wait a minute" are also sampled in The Orb's "Toxygene" from 1997. But I'm still not sure where it's from. Cary Grant maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm PortsmouthJay:

Choose one if it could come back: Luna Lounge, CBGBs, TONIC, Brownies, or The Cooler.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Krys O.:

I have fond memories of Tonic, Portsmouth Jay. They get my vote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm steveo:

i just saw a pair of redfinches!
  1:29pm clarke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm steveo:

redfinches are the loudest band at maxwells!
  1:30pm clarke:

(as far as treatment of bands - maxwell's by far was tops - as well as diverse great booking, of course).
Avatar 1:31pm R. Noel Fox:

Regards to loud shows, I saw Swans a few times at Warsaw. The last time they played, I sat in a chair on the balcony, and was soon after swamped by annoying normies for the opener. Then Swans started playing a goddamn wall of sound, and it totally emptied out. I was pleased.
Avatar 1:31pm mb:

Gotta go with Boris being the loudest band i've witnessed. Had to walk out.

Also dearly miss Tonic. Was my intro to the Zorn world and that book shop led me to the Free Jazz world via a pamphlet by Cooper-Moore.
Avatar 1:32pm R. Noel Fox:

Krys - Yes, I was going to suggest Tonic as well!
Avatar 1:33pm Roberto:

Wow, very un-STP-sounding STP here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Loudest-Nick Cave first US tour. Also, saw Deerhunter and show was completely ruined by volume. Insanely, dopey loud.
  1:35pm Cumbia Phil:

Great show again!
  1:36pm carrots:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Gaylord Fields:

East River Pipe wrote a an entire album inspired by Route 22. That, among other things, makes FM Cornog a musical hero in my estimation.

Dino Jr. at the old Hammerjacks here in Baltimore was pretty loud but my loudest concert experience was standing directly in front of a giant speaker at a Pixies reunion tour concert. Sound felt like wind.

@ the Oscar I'd forgotten what a great soundtrack Brain Candy had
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Dano59:

Yeah! Odds. Great guys. Got to introduce them at a. show in Waterloo ON
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Bill in W.O.:

@Jeff, that's actually encouraging news. And jealous you saw that show. Great?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Dano59:

"when I invented Stummies..." the Pharma CEO was Terry McKinney's take on Lorne Michaels
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Mike Sin:

Was able to get my "ear goggles" on and join in right when you were playing Velvet Crush. It made me think back to the times I saw them live back in ye 1990s. Saw them twice at Maxwell's in Hoboken. Man, those show were fun. I was such a fan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Dano59:

Good day, Good Tunes .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Krys O.:

Dialog from Brain Candy still pop into my head. Like it's 72 degrees in your head all the time....

BTW-It was Mark McKinney.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Bill in W.O.:

Was just reading an interview with Mr. Sweet about his new record. He said it's his first where he plays all the guitar heard on the record, which maybe stupidly was a surprise to me. It's not like he's incapable. It's nice to have guitar ace friends, but he's got a sound himself.

so I hear dad's dead. hey, is that egg nog?
Avatar 2:36pm R. Noel Fox:

I saw the most TERRIBLE screening of Brain Candy a few years ago. It was the original cut, with a bunch of unseen scenes, but the video was from some digital copy that degraded every time they played it. It was like watching a video on the internet in 1995, blown up for a screen. I can't understand why they didnt' just transfer it to a different format, and just splice in the shitty missing scenes to a good copy of the film. But it was hosted by Kevin McDonald, so that was cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Mr. Pumpy:

Hello Pseu and all the listeners! I can't listen properly right now because I'm teaching the children (remotely). I'm bummed because the setlist looks awesome! Thanks for fighting the good fight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Dano59:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Mr. Pumpy:

Yes, this is egg nog. How did you know?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Krys O.:

Dang, Fox. That sounds irritating. I had a VHS copy of Brain Candy and someone I loaned it to kept it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Mike Sin:

Re: "Murray the why"
I've listened to the soundtrack to this x-rated movie about a hundred times but have never seen the movie! For those in the know, is it worth checking out? Will I be scandalized? Will I end up clutching my pearls? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Dano59:

mike, if you can handle Beyond the Valley of the Doils, you'll probably be OK.

I meant to type 60 ml

Thank you for your attention to your radio show, Pseu. We, as a nation of WFMU listeners, are forever in your debt. Be well, everyone.

Oh, I just learned the the iconic Roxy Florist building in Bloomfield Center was demolished. A tragic fire destroyed the bulding about a year ago. They had a fabulous prominent Art Deco neon sign.
