Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David Dichelle:

Sorry to see and hear it, Brian - hope you are managing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David Dichelle:

Good morning to you, Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm YETI BOB:

Do they have music in Turks and Caicos? Of course they do! "Ripsaw is a musical genre which originated in the Turks and Caicos Islands, specifically in the Middle and North Caicos. A very closely related variant, rake-and-scrape, is played in the Bahamas. Its most distinctive characteristic is the use of the common handsaw as the primary instrument"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Brian in UK:

Hey chresti, are you off work?

David, safe & sound as can be. I do feel for those folks that are flooded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm David Dichelle:

Glad to hear that, Brian.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm chresti:

Hi Phillippe! Hope meeting hell isn't too hellish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm David (in London):

Phillippe, you're having to spend too much time in meetings. I think I need to have a word with your employers as it's affecting your Accu productivity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm David Dichelle:

I wonder if everyone is now finding Zoom meetings to be less burdensome than in-person ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm chresti:

Hello David in London!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm David Dichelle:

Yeti Bob (upthread): Finnish and Estonian are very closely related, in fact.

Name that bagpipe. Imma guess North Umbrian
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm WR:

random road guess: Korea. and i was trying to look in the iso DNS lists to see if the is different DNS for North & South Korea and after 10 minutes of reading / searching my head hurts. so i say for my guesss, Korea, just that. particularly comic is if Korea has already been done and i missed it.

PS: anyone thinking of participating in the The Unthanks Winter Onliner?
  12:36pm headcleaner:

@David - danke, es war auch meine zweite Heimat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm David Dichelle:

Hello WR: Neither has been done as of yet, in fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm David Dichelle:

Headclear: Ah, das erklärt's! Where did you live in Germany?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm David (in London):

Ja, und meine auch. Während einer seltsamen Zeit ins Leben.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Phillippe Bastille:

@DiL I believe a note from Station Manager Ken would go a long way to helping me out as well in that regard. I swear, if I hear "I/Soandso can't make that meeting, can you handle it on your own?" one more time this week i will scream...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm YETI BOB:

DD: Sure, Finnish and Estonian are close, but that's no excuse! There's no ü in Finnish, that should have tipped me off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm David Dichelle:

David: It can get weird here at times. Were you David (in Berlin) then or somewhere else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm YETI BOB:

WR: The official names (in English) are Republic of Korea (south) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (north)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm chresti:

Democratic, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm David (in London):

David, I was David (in Berlin) and occasionally David (in Münster). Came very near to making it permanent, but family connections mitigated against it. Glad I didn't in retrospect, but as with headcleaner, it's a second home and I still visit two or three times a year (in 'normal' years prior to you-know-what...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Carmichael:

Mary Wing could do a 3oak with North Korean music, as it's all one song about Our Great Leader.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm YETI BOB:

@chresti: Right, just like the DDR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Michael 98145:

G'day, friends. Feels like we're coming out of the tunnel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Carmichael:

@chresti, if it's called People's Democratic Republic, it's communist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm David Dichelle:

David: Nice - maybe our paths will cross sometime over here, then, when normal is normaler again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm David Dichelle:

Hello Michael!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm David (in London):

David. I haven't been to Leipzig for a while, and I have friends there, so when I do I will hold you to a beer or two.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm David Dichelle:

Good questions Coel: There are no hard and fast rules, just that the music is somehow from or connected to the place it is today. And I remove the countries from the list when they come up, so last week, for example, I rolled for a random number from 215 (remaining). I then checked the list to see what that number corresponded to.

Avatar 1:54pm still b/p:

I noticed in a couple of recent daily-paper comic strips, the authors still had accordion stuck in its goofy, nerdy, widely mocked and unwelcome status. Seemed strange -- a bluntly dated, wrong note and missed-boat perspective, given how common and great the instrument's profile has been for years now in music that plenty of people are exposed to or making. Aside from fresher hearings, I even enjoy several-decades-old clips of Myron Floren kickin' ASS on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm David (in London):

I just had an annoying cold sales call on my personal mobile, so I held it to the speaker and the person at the other end had a good blast of Stazione Manouche. It was almost a minute before the call ended, so I assume the person on the other end must have been enjoying it.

Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm coelacanth☯:

a consolation prize? maybe a little plastic ring or a plastic gyroscopic whistle or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Yvang:

Chances we will hear some Orchestre Poly-Rythmo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm David Dichelle:

Coel: Congrats - you are of course closest, being just to the north...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm David Dichelle:

I need to invest in Continental Subway gyroscopic whistles to give away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm David Dichelle:

Yvang: You need not wait long...

In a meeting right now so not actually listening. But "African Scream Contest" is one of my favorite albums of African music! I'll be back ASAP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Brian in UK:

Did the inventors of the Hang copy the principles of the calabash?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm YETI BOB:

"Legends of Benin" is also a favorite. Analog Africa put out some great discs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm David Dichelle:

Yes, you can hardly go wrong with Analog Africa.
Avatar 2:20pm northguineahills:

....and to think there weren't any volcanoes in Benin....
Avatar 2:21pm northguineahills:

(oddly enough, I have *counts on my fingers*)four records on vinyl from Benin....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm YETI BOB:

(prays for meeting to wrap up quickly!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Stanley:

Brian - can't store palm wine in them Hangs. So no thanks, I'll stick with my gourd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm David Dichelle:

Hey there NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm David Dichelle:

Good question, Brian...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Brian in UK:

Stanley, why not make a Kora then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm YETI BOB:

Hey, that went extra-fast - one of my coworkers was out today so that sped things up. Glad to be back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm David Dichelle:

Welcome back, YB - I guess the meeting Zoomed by?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm YETI BOB:

DD - indeed, even though it was Webex
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Ike:

Cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm dutchtheo:

Hello, David and da homies, Benin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm YETI BOB:

BTW, listener dutchtheo (not here today) guessed Benin on Jan 7 - www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Stanley:

Sorry Brian but I'm stoned out of my gourd.
Avatar 2:27pm northguineahills:

dat keyboard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm YETI BOB:

dutchtheo! i was just looking up old shows to see who had guessed Benin :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm David Dichelle:

Welcome Ike and Dutchtheo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm David (in London):

Stanley, just don't get out of your tree as well.
  2:29pm Funky16Corners:

Hey David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm David Dichelle:

And congrats DT - you were just ahead of your time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Larry!
Avatar 2:31pm TDK60:

Aaaahhhhhh, another exhalation, prompted by sociological recent stuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm David (in London):

TDK, that beats another exhalation, prompted by scatological recent stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm David (in London):

Sorry. I'll get my coat.
Avatar 2:34pm TDK60:

Hee. No David, a new English word?: scato-sociological?
Avatar 2:34pm northguineahills:

And for some reason, I have a few Togoese rekkids (Bed-Stuy and Harlem was good place to crate dig for West African vinyl in junk stores)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Handy Haversack:

As someone who works in academic publishing, I have to guess that *someone* has used "scato-socio-logical" in print already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm YETI BOB:

I'll take scatological over eschatological
Avatar 2:36pm northguineahills:

I'd say scatopathological..... (in reference to the above)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Handy Haversack:

Though Scaton is much worse for the tennis racket than Eschaton ...
  2:37pm headcleaner:

Can't think about Benin without thinking about the Kingdom of Dahomey. And one can't think about the Kingdom of Dahomey without, of course, thinking about Klaus Kinski. Now can we, now can we, now can we? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobra_Verde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm David (in London):

I've always enjoyed Supertramp's 'The Scato-Logical Song'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm David Dichelle:

Headcleaner: Interesting, I've never seen that one.
Avatar 2:40pm northguineahills:

Dahomey was one of the last great kingdoms until the Euros moved in (actually mostly further north then most of current Benin).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm coelacanth☯:

i have to scoot on outa here
Thanks David!
later on y'all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Stanley:

see ya coela
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm David (in London):

Toodles Coela.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Coel, take care!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Handy Haversack:

Later, coela.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Brian in UK:

David, great show, especially the third set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm David Dichelle:

Hard to go wrong with so much great music from Benin.
  2:47pm headcleaner:

@David - highly recommended - there's something about the Herzog-Kinski chemistry
Avatar 2:47pm northguineahills:

need to get food, thanks, David!
Avatar 2:48pm still b/p:

Here's some "ifs". If Klaus Kinski were still alive, and if Donald Trump got convicted of something serious, the best sentence would be exile on a vey small island with Kinski and minimal supplies and shelter where they'd have to survive together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Handy Haversack:

And SM Ken gets to continuously remix Herzog's commentary on the raw footage.
  2:51pm headcleaner:

@b/p - oh Kinski was a piece of work, no doubt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Ike:

@still b/p, that sounds like the best season of Survivor ever. And maybe put them in Cambodia (the location where they got the most injuries and infections). I mean, almost every season is intentionally cast w/a "crazy person" with no emotional intelligence, but that would really take the cake.
Avatar 2:52pm Really Lisa:

Thank you, David. My stop approaches.
Peace, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Handy Haversack:

The Beninese stuff has been great! Really enjoyable show, David! I am mad I had to miss the Roud, though. A scatosocial situation!

Thanks so much! Already looking forward to the next ride.

Be well, Straphangers.
Avatar 2:53pm TDK60:

Insanely complex percussion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm David (in London):

Thanks David, terrific show today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm dutchtheo:

Yes two weeks ahead of my time, YB & DD.
I saw the Gangbé Brass Band some years ago, was great live music, sad that the live music is so scarse these days ,
Thanks, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm spodiodi:

thanks, David!
Avatar 2:54pm Sem:

Thank you, David. Perhaps Cape Verde some other time. See you and all aboard next trip. Bye!
Avatar 2:55pm Bas NL:

What a great Benin set. Looking forward to some more Benin tracks. Thanks David! Great show!
Avatar 2:55pm still b/p:

Thank you for the railway's rewards.
  2:55pm headcleaner:

nice plays + nettes plaudern, David! bis näxes mal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Stanley:

Very enjoyable. Thanks David.
Avatar 2:57pm TDK60:

Well danke, David. Keep Leipzig fun.
  2:57pm headcleaner:

Cape Verde, being the coolest country of all (in musical terms) as a ratio to surface area, will surely come last in David's supposedly random rotation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Yvang:

Lovely musical tour to Benin! Thanks David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Brian in UK:

Not sure if they are still touring, who is. Go see Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm chresti:

Thanks David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Michael 98145:

Gracias!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm David Dichelle:

Thanks everyone!
