I have got to finish this report. But the bourbon is not helping. At all. Didn’t Hemingway write while loaded? Hunter Thompson?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22am
mariano:

egould: Yeah, gotta crank out a few things for an a.m. deadline. I think everybody before a certain date did everything while loaded. Not me though, just some duck and andouille gumbo and the occasional pinch of English snuff.

nicer flyer, c̷h̷a̷nge... reminds of me of a tunnel i used to spray at while studying in college in NC en.wikipedia.org...
  12:25am
egould310:

@mariano can’t go wrong with gumbo. I gotta wrap this up and get to some guitar strumming for an hour or so. Guitar strumming and bourbon go well together.

@egould -- what mariano said above!
i was born in 1959 -- so did not grow up during the "hippie" 60s but the polyester disco 70s -- EVERYONE drank, smoked cigarettes, etc. -- the drinking age was still 18 when i graduated high school, and people smoked cigarettes in offices, restaurants, etc., well into the 80s, and there were smoking cars on NJ Transit trains (ewww! even though i smoked cigarettes back then, i would always go to the non-smoking cars)

Sup SC and boarders

aside: Went thru all my rekkids recently and found the first one i bought at a WFMU record fair. It was Thirstin' Howl the III - "I Still Live With My Moms" sold to me by DJSC, himself!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am
mariano:

There you go, egould!

$mall ¢hange: What module is that from? It's familiar but I can't place it.

slugluv: Born in 1969, and adults smoked around kids all the time. When we'd set off firecrackers and rockets for Xmas, New Year, and 4th they didn't think twice about giving us cigarettes to light the fuses. "Make sure you puff on it to keep it lit!" From around age six through high school.
  12:33am
$mall ¢hange:

haha I Still Lives With My Moms! classic. I believe that record got some play at FMU when it came out.

mariano I'm not sure, I think Tomb of Horrors?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am
mariano:

mb: I love "I Still Live with my Moms"! I sent that and Ween's "Piss up a Rope" to my mom and both of those songs became underground hits with her old lady bridge group.

$mall ¢hange: That was my first guess, I'll have to dig up my digital copy.
Avatar 12:41am
slugluv1313:

@mariano -- my younger sister and i were not allowed anywhere near firecrackers when i was a kid! but yeah, adults smoked cigarettes around kids everywhere -- hospitals too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49am
mariano:

Lol, slugluv. What's the world coming to when you can't let your six-year-old light firecrackers with a cigarette?

on one hand, a bunch of stuff is cancelled or just bad... on the other hand, more time to listen to various discographies to discover anything that you overlooked in the past.

I don’t think Dr. King was anti-capital.

Anti-violence, yes. I think the speaker is projecting his own objectives onto the legacy of Dr. King.
  2:17am
$mall ¢hange:

ummm...haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22am
northguineahills:

There's a difference b/tn being anti-capital and being anti-oppressing the working class for monetary gain. There are many positive examples, say many nations along the Baltic Sea. Said nations also take care of their citizens, and won't bankrupt you if you get ill.
  2:25am
egould310:

How does oppressing someone = monetary gain? What is the mechanism?
  2:27am
$mall ¢hange:

'How does oppressing someone = monetary gain? What is the mechanism?'

this is western imperialism in a nutshell. anyways I think Ajamu has a very good understanding of Dr King.

'How does oppressing someone = monetary gain?'

um...slavery? lol

  2:33am
egould310:

The practice of slavery is oppression. But capitalism is not the practice of slavery. Capitalism is voluntary. Mutually beneficial.
  2:38am
$mall ¢hange:

'Mutually beneficial.'

great system, seems to be working out just fine! stock market up while millions hungry, out of work, facing eviction, no health care. would say its the opposite of 'mutual'...but it does benefit a small group of ppl sure

  2:55am
BH:

One MLK thing to keep in mind: He was murdered at 39. That murder could have robbed us of finding out how his next 39 years would have gone and how he would have responded to all sorts of things that would have happened over those years.

There's a bunch of people who'll end of being pretty notable and having an influence that won't come close to being as influential by age 39 as King.

Also not gonna lean any which way on how funded his murderer was (or other aspects of that).. but apparently 1967 was a year when you could just escape from Prison in a bread truck, quickly buy a 66 Ford Mustang, and get a rhinoplasty. With all that, it's no wonder one could think he was in on something. Nowadays, they might actually be able/willing to look for somebody if they escaped a state prison.
  2:56am
$mall ¢hange:

thanks for tunin' in ppl! catch ya next week
  2:59am
egould310:

I went to the Stax Records museum back in September, and part of the “Stax Story” was that things changed after MLK’s assassination. Race relations in Memphis and at Stax deteriorated. Sad.

Thanjs $¢!
