Hello Gary! I think you hit a vein!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

Evening, Evening Dean and David!
  7:08pm zzzm:

I was in east Greece two years ago (Thessaloniki ). I had an impression 50%+ were from Egypt there.
  7:09pm Dean:

Got a dose of Greek genes myself, but never been there. In any event, I'm moving to Cyprus as soon as I can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Gary:

I want my next trip to be to Egypt, but we'll see
  7:11pm zzzm:

There were large tourists from Cyprus there too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm doctorjazz:

Great set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm doctorjazz:

If we can ever travel again, I'll head to Africa (had a trip planned that got shot to hell by the pandemic).
Avatar 7:14pm northguineahills:

If it wasn't for math, I wouldn't be able to read Greek....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

Where in Africa, Doctor J?
  7:16pm zzzm:

oh if all goes well, I am planning Serbia ~ Albaniia in summer.
  7:18pm Dean:

I studied Attic Greek on my own using Hansen & Quinn's marvelous "intensive" course many years ago. Trouble is there aren't a lot of places to meet other speakers of Attic Greek to practice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Gary:

I have come to debase the Koine
Avatar 7:20pm TDK60:

This P. Rizos is fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Gary:

  7:21pm Dean:

Attic precedes Koine, yes? The latter is "Biblical"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

Avatar 7:22pm chresti:

Not many people have attics to study in, Dean.
  7:24pm zzzm:

Greece was so rich I had no time exploring pop culture at my short stay. I didn't know they had such great stuff too!
Avatar 7:24pm TDK60:

That is good solid WFMU stuff. We need it. Somebody tape it..
  7:25pm Dean:

I bet there are lots of orthopaedic surgeons who have no spine, either, chresti.
  7:26pm Dean:

For those of you who don't speak Greek, "fuck" (which Gary just uttered" means "fuck."
Avatar 7:26pm chresti:

What does that have to do with studying Greek in the attic?
  7:27pm Dean:

If you need an attic to study Attic, you need a spine to study spines...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Gary:

Home taping killed the radio star
Avatar 7:28pm chresti:

If you say so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Gary:

Avatar 7:29pm northguineahills:

@Dean: You need Obama's time machine to go back to ancient Athens....
Avatar 7:31pm northguineahills:

For a real challenge, try Pontic Greek (I don't speak Greek, outside of what I know from science, so it's all a challenge).
  7:33pm Dean:

I don't particularly get the time machine reference, but I'm happy to read about it. Time--or any--travel isn't my bag.
Avatar 7:34pm TDK60:

Gary, you ever played Kristi Stassinopoulou? Greek psych singer; I have one album.
  7:34pm Dean:

Pontic? Wow, that's amazing. Judging from OED, it's a rich concept.
Avatar 7:36pm northguineahills:

@Dean: it's a meme from referencing GOPers that blame stuff on Obama even from before he was in power. (he also had a weather machine, apparently, and caused Katrina).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm doctorjazz:

Kenya, Rwanda, was the trip, a Gary.
Avatar 7:37pm chresti:

I've never been to Greece, I've heard it's hot there.
  7:37pm Dean:

Ah, got it. Yes, I'm aware of that "meme," though I try mightily to avoid all of them. (In truth, though, Obama deserves a lot of blame.)

I had no idea that Nana Mouskouri was still around, doing her thing.
Avatar 7:37pm still b/p:

A young woman I know called me at work several years ago to settle an argument with a friend of hers, who claimed modern Greeks didn't speak ...Greek, that it was only an ancient language.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Gary:

right, but some reason i've connected Nana Mouskouri french venue
  7:39pm Dean:

I read chresti @7:37 only after reading still b/p @7:37, and so I at first saw "I've heard it's not there."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Gary:

I have, but I somehow didn't know about the Greek show
Avatar 8:17pm TDK60:

Yeah they're pretty prominent on there; called "Cosmos FM" I think. NYE also has a caylpso show, other ethnic shows, educational shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Gary:

There's actually a Greek radio station in this neighborhood, although I haven't heard it. But I've walked past the building. Not sure if it's on air or internet only

Avatar 8:41pm chresti:

I glanced at news bits about the ceremony at work. Listened to some to the wild shows, also.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Gary:

Headcleaner, it is all of it, but the isolated H? Maybe most?

  8:49pm headcleaner:

@gary - I just didn't quite get your description of it on-air - "glicchial h agaf" was what my ears heard, but I'm having trouble mapping that to any phonological terms I know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gary:

My mom was FREAKED the FUCK OUT when they were walking over (b/c she was worried something would happen)
Avatar 8:51pm TDK60:

I had a question no one could answer then - does the Marine Band do any Dylan? I think I heard J. Lo do a medley that included Woody Guthrie's Ths Land Is Your Land.
  8:54pm Pie:

Brooklyners- I read in an emerging technologies book that areas of Brooklyn trade solar energy

That concept is brilliant; the sharing economy and gig economy and such hasn’t really taken off too much in Minneapolis.

Really cool concepts though. Im somewhat anti 9-5 which I certainly don’t oppose (and is changing because of current circumstances of the past year). I just don’t like the rigid image of “working stiff and fighting days” it is fighting reality essentially. But cheers to keeping progress progressive.
  8:54pm headcleaner:

@tim abdellah - it may blow your mind even more to learn (as I did only a few years ago) that (for quite a long time) the pan-Hellenic "empire" (or sphere of influence) was much, much larger than modern Greece is today - spanning basically all of the coastal areas of the black sea, much of modern Turkey, off into Iran and central Asia
Avatar 8:54pm northguineahills:

@tim: See also the former Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, and parts of Hungary.

Before the demise of the Ottoman Empire, there were millions of ethnic Greeks in Anatolia (mostly along the Med coast and the Black Sea.
Avatar 8:55pm northguineahills:

Also, the Ottoman Empire started mostly as a Balkan empire w/ some Anatolian territories before it took defeated Constantinople.

Avatar 8:57pm still b/p:

"Alright now, for all you boppers out there in the big city."
  8:57pm headcleaner:

@gary - anyway I definitely get your broader point about there being "something about" Greek that makes it hard to place (to our wilted Anglophone ears) - and in any case I just love the sound of it (especially when spoken softly)
Avatar 8:57pm northguineahills:

@Webhanster Henry: I have one.

Thessalonica and Sofia used to be Turk-majority cities....(until 1920) (the disasterous population exchange that killed Turks and Greeks alike (see the Hind/Muslim exchange in Pakistan and India in 1947 as a more recent comparison).
Avatar 9:01pm tim abdellah:

@headcleaner and @ngh - I got some sense of that in the documentary, which did a pretty good job unpacking the emergence of ethno-nationlism in the 19th century - bringing in economic and political contexts, and not reducing it to religious and cultural differences.
  9:02pm headcleaner:

on other topics, Gary - ever heard of Killah P - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavlos_Fyssas ? From some searches I did recently, it seems that no one has played him yet

@TDK60 - yep
Avatar 9:05pm still b/p:

Saw part of the Rise of Empires: Ottoman, a couple weeks ago -- combination of doc and dramatizations telling story of conquest of Constantinople, but, man, the actual siege took less time then the program. We didn't hang on to see all of how, you know, Constantinople got the works.

Here's a link to that documentary I was talking about. Available to stream 'til the end of the month through UC Berkeley's art museum/film archive ($10) bampfa.org...

Is kief like hashish? A local pot shop offers pot with kief.

I think I mentioned last week, that Greek colleague gifted me some rembetika rekkids he inherited from his father, as he knew I'd appreciate them.
Avatar 9:41pm northguineahills:

I actually think I have this on vinyl. Yep! (never knew the titile).

Just realized that Tsitsanis was born and died on the same day, Jan. 18

Chresti, I think kif is softer powder, or buds, of cannabis intended for making into hash. From North Africa - Algeria, Morocco I think. {?}
Avatar 9:49pm tim abdellah:

I think what they call kif in the States may not be the same as what kif is in Morocco. In Morocco it's very finely chopped cannabis, smoked in a tiny clay pipe bowl. Brings you up and down quickly and gently!

Dean, how about some BASEMENT Greek?
  9:50pm Dean:

Heh, there y'are.
Avatar 9:51pm northguineahills:

Roza is one of the most famous Rembetika stars. Rembetika was music of sailors, hash smokers, and other social outcasts. I believe she was Roma-Jewish.

Thanks, Gary, kick-ass show!.

Ah, here it's like a resin? I'll get some and report back.

Tim, Chresti I saw some that was loose yellow-green stuff, different from a lot of the Mexican usually around but that was a long time ago.

Inspiration for the Ramones, I gather.

Had to lower the level of discourse with a pun?

“Why Snakes need Oil: 101 Bad Business Practices and How to Fix Them” my dad said the French say that they eat with their eyes first. The intro is written.
Ye or Ney? Either way I’m gonna try! :::)
Funny anecdotes will be included because it seems this is just how the intro took me.

Oh, we can all take the discourse lower. Was gonna suggest earlier that the Greek rappers were hop-hoplites.
