Reviewer in Fanfare Sept./Oct. 1991 of the harpsichord sonata recording writes, "Because I attended performances of Donald Erb works in several cities, the composer once dubbed me 'the only Don Erb groupie.' What I love best about his music is the combination of a wild imagination for sonority with an omnipresent but often-hidden discipline which propels his music forward in almost-classical fashion. He links two disparate faces of American music, the eccentric originality of Partch and of two Erb idols, Ives and Varese, with a formal drive typical of the 'uptown' schools, which Erb may have inherited from his teachers, Nadia Boulanger and Bernard Heiden."

There's a story about how a friend of mine came to have a credit on Beaver & Krause' "Gandharva" album. The true story has almost nothing to do with the way he's credited, but everything to do with why he is if I understand correctly. Sadly, I'm not at liberty to go into greater detail.
  12:35pm
Dean:

Of this concerto, the same reviewer writes, "Outspoken and forthright, Erb says he dislikes listening to Beethoven's music because he feels he is getting a scolding; but in his own powerful scores, Erb is capable of shaking his musical fist at the heavens with a fury rivaling that of the German titan."

I do like it, @coelacanth∅. It's on the money. I'm awaiting the arrival of Jordi Savall's band's traversal of the first five symphonies, which is by many accounts among the best of all time.

He planned a cycle of all nine symphonies, but pandemic delayed the project, so they will issue only the first five for now. Band is Le Concert de Nations, a full orchestra.
  12:54pm

Fanfare on the Savall set: "Only people such as Ludwig van Beethoven and Jordi Savall can save humanity from total annihilation, and every politician on the planet should be made to sit down and listen to this until they finally get it."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
coelacanth∅:

interesting. so it's not out yet...
  12:56pm
Dean:

Just out, I believe. I'm awaiting delivery. Same reviewer: "I have no doubt that some reading this, admittedly, complete rave-review, will disregard it as being just too over-the-top for words: surely nothing can be *that* good! At the risk of validating that potential criticism even further, however, I am going to double-down on the hyperbole and state the following: in my opinion, there has never been a finer recording made of any music, at any time, in any genre, then this recording of the first five Beethoven symphonies."

Haven't heard the LVB yet, and I'm predisposed to like it, because I adore Savall's work and LVB's music. Recently acquired Rene Jacobs' recording of Leonore, the proto-Fidelio. Haven't heard it yet, either.

One thing about Erb I love is the sheer slapstick genius of some of it. Lotta hilarity with this one.
  1:05pm
Dean:

I took gangsta rap as unadulterated compliment! Beethoven, predictable? That I don't hear. But bombast, sure, when called for. I had a dream a few nights ago that we discovered a tenth symphony. First two movements were typical, but the third movement was a two-hour long episodic meander, followed by a one-hour fourth movement played excruciatingly slowly. Would like to hear it, actually.

Jacobs claims the original version is superior to what we know as Fidelio, contrary to the performance tradition.

What would be an informal name for Ludwig, Lu? Wiggy?
  1:28pm
Dean:

According to -pedia, "Nicknames are Ludva, Ludia, Luděk, Viky."

I've always assumed it was Camper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm

i knew someone named Ludwig and some people called him Wig
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
coelacanth∅:

(i called him "Ludwig")
Avatar 1:29pm
Stork:

@chresti: it would be "Ludi" - and because he was so tiny, it might have been kleine Ludi. Just spitballin in German over here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
coelacanth∅:

was Beethoven of a small stature?
Avatar 1:34pm
Stork:

Yeah, he was tiny, and kind of congenitally unattractive, is what the books say. Poor guy pined after many women, and none would have him. He was very messy. That couldn't have helped.
  1:34pm
Dean:

Maynard Solomon wrote that Beethoven "was powerfully built, with broad shoulders, strong hands overgrown with hair, and short, thick fingers."
Avatar 1:36pm
Stork:

Oh, yeah and Erb told Lynne Harrell to sing as well. That really makes this piece, nicht wahr?

Ludi cross 'cos Ludi gross.

Walking the dog just now, I was thinking about whether or when I'd listen to him again. The symphonies and the quartets were an important part of my life, at a time. I'd have to find a way to make them new for myself again. Sometimes a new recording can do that.

I have an electronic sampler LP with a Reynold Weidenaar piece, real goofy. One of the tech asst. on 'In No Strange.'

This sounds like it could be a free jazz improv (In No Strange Land). I assume it's written out
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:47pm

@doctorjazz: I no longer assume much. I was told by people who worked with (well, for) Stockhausen that not as much as I thought was written out beforehand

I need to clarify there: the score was written down, but the electronics were not so much, not even afterwards

In German that would be unZö, chresti.

I'm tempted to make a crude pun of Beethoven's last name.
