Good morning Jeff. || 4 days to go...
  9:02am Doug Schulkind:

Play some nice grocery-sanitizing sounds, will ya!
  9:02am DJpeterDE:

Morning all! Was just telling the wife I wished we could go to breakfast at Howard Johnson's
Avatar 9:02am hyde:

Avatar 9:03am duke:

Good morning all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Jeff Golick:

Hey-o, @WR, @fred, @Rock Ridge Chess Club, @Sem, @TDK60, @Doug, @DJpeterDE, @hyde, @duke! Whoa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am listener james from westwood:

Morning, Jeff and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @listener james!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Jeff Golick:

Re grocery-sanitizing, I read a dispiriting article this morning about how we should all really avoid grocery stores and supermarkets (again), given the new strains. I realized I had put those stores in my personal "OK to go" category. Time to recalibrate.
Avatar 9:19am Listener Gregory:

I sanitize my "internet radio" before and after listening to the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am fred:

I saw a few great performances by Okkyung Lee, especially solo. I hope I'll get to see her again, someday
Avatar 9:21am Der Storkler:

Hay, hay, whutcha say? Yo's all around!
Avatar 9:23am Listener Gregory:

The cello is the most lyrical of instruments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am fred:

The credits for the Okkyung Lee release are something:
Mixed/Photo by Lasse Marhaug
Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi
Sleeve design by Stephen O’Malley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Stork!

@fred: I also got to see Lee once, solo. I share your hope!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Also, @fred: I do not recognize the name Ielasi -- do tell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am doctorjazz:

G'morming all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @doctorjazz!
Avatar 9:32am TDK60:

I still go to supermarkets, Jeff, but try to go when not busy. I try to wipe down groceries when I get home, sometimes forget! But I always take my mask, winter hat, cloth gloves and launder in hot water, right away.
Avatar 9:34am TDK60:

Also, I bought some skinny air filters to tape onto box fans, to gather particles in the house air. I run them for several hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am fred:

I saw all three live several times. Ielasi is less in the noise style than the other two, maybe closer to experimental sound art or free improv? I suck at genres
Avatar 9:37am Der Storkler:

Getting a Ravel's Bolero vibe from this Other Dimentsions -- I'm likin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am fred:

My best guide for unfamiliar names is to see which WFMU DJs played them (82 playlists, Daniel Blumin most frequent, but many people there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Jeff Golick:

@TDK60: I will try to emulate your process, but I will fail.

@fred: thanks, and that's a good technique!
Avatar 9:54am Listener Gregory:

This set has built gradually to a climax. I feel like the frog in the boiling water now... come on in, the water's fine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Uncle Michael:

Good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Wassup, @Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Uncle Michael:

Just placed my first ever grocery order for curbside pickup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Jeff Golick:

@LG: we are all that frog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Uncle Michael:

We're not wiping down much anymore. Fear of fomites has waned. We'll go back to it if the mutations warrant it. We hand-wash a lot.
Avatar 10:11am Listener Gregory:

I have long had Eric Revis classified as a pretty straight-ahead musician, but his own records are quite adventurous. I somehow got this one and agree that it is quite good. Of course, I have been in the heating water for some time now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am doctorjazz:

Same as UM, stopped sanitizing groceries. I read an interview with some epidemiologists, who were asked if they do, and they said they don't sanitize. Most of the risk is person to person.
  10:12am DJpeterDE:

Hearing Kris Davis reminds me: I learned that she studied with Delbecq and am wondering if she got the prepared piano stuff from him. Also: he has a new album and I asked his publicist how to pronounce his given name, and she told me: ben-wah
  10:13am DJpeterDE:

Don't let the circumflex fool you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am doctorjazz:

I'll need to break for yoga soon, enjoying this Revis now, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Jeff Golick:

That seems wise, @UM. There's no Hinky Dinky to shop at now, is there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @DJpeterDE! I got schooled on Benoit the last time I mispronounced his name (thanks, @fred!).
Avatar 10:16am Listener Gregory:

Since @DJpeterDE mentioned Delbecq, I'll also plug a recent CD by Francois Houle (which I would pronounce Ool) called "Recoder" with Gerry Hemingway and others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am chresti:

Morning Jeff and d' OUTers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am doctorjazz:

Saw Kris Davis in Jonathan Blake's band, she's a very interesting player, one of these folks who doesn't sound like anyone else. Liked her a lot.
Avatar 10:19am Der Storkler:

What glorious music! Hey, anybody know Kris Davis' birthday? I remember flying over and dropping her off, but I can't remember what day that was, and Wiki don't know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

Howdy, @chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am fred:

@DJpeterDE: That circumflex on "i" is purely decorative in French, no effect on pronunciation at all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am coelacanth∅:

g'morning Jeff, OUTies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Jeff Golick:

How do, @coelacanth∅!
Avatar 10:28am hyde:

making a big batch of daikon pickle this morning. let's just say this kitchen is *fragrant*
  10:29am DJpeterDE:

Fred: I don't remember learning anything about circumflexes in college French!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am doctorjazz:

Ok, back later, nice set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Jeff Golick:

Happy yoga-ing, @doc!
Avatar 10:32am Listener Gregory:

My memory is that the circumflex (and often the accent aigu) often stands for a missing -s, which may have been there historically. E.g., être <-- estre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am fred:

@DJpeterDE: It does modify "e", but also randomly shows up on other letters with no effect. Kind of a non-metal umlaut
Avatar 10:37am Listener Gregory:

Does this remind anyone of My Little Brown Book?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am coelacanth∅:

hyde, i bet! ... i bought dried grated daikon once. that was an interesting smell.
i don't actually remember eating that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Jeff Golick:

That Coltrane/Duke version, @LG? Sure, I can get with that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am chresti:

I get confused with the "h" in French, when it's silent or not.
Avatar 10:40am hyde:

@coel this pickle i make tastes great, but opening the fridge for the next ten days will be kind of stanky
  10:40am DJpeterDE:

Fred: I thank you for explaining accent marks using a metaphor that resonates
  10:42am DJpeterDE:

Gregory: I hear that. But more to the point: it's a classic Benny Morė tune
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am coelacanth∅:

no doubt hyde. around the same time (~30 years ago, when i managed a store that sold all this stuff) i had a pickled daikon that came in a vacuum-sealed pouch, with rice bran packed around it. that was good.
...and i love an oshinko roll!
Avatar 10:44am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, I think Coltrane did it with Johnny Hartman too. At least, I can hear his voice in my head. "My little brown book with the silver lining, doo doo doo doo remind me, of you."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am coelacanth∅:

it's cool that you're pickling it yourself.
i guess it's not hard, but i've never done it.
Avatar 10:46am Listener Gregory:

Hmmm, that may be a false memory, as it's not on the Coltrane/Harman record, but Hartman did record it: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 10:47am hyde:

@coel i've used that fermented rice bran before, but i got in trouble with the gf because i got nukazuke all over the house! this one is pretty much just tons of sugar, rice vinegar and salt that makes for a syrupy brine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am WR:

good to have confirmation of where i am aurally, thanks Jeff.
Avatar 10:49am Der Storkler:

Actually Stork Club is 6 to 9 pm here in Yurp, , but time is just an abstraction, man...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am coelacanth∅:

hyde you're inspiring me
...hopefully my housemate hasn't made all my mason jars disappear.
Avatar 10:52am Der Storkler:

Happy 74th birthday Billy Harper!!
Avatar 10:54am Der Storkler:

Howard Johnson also played live at WFMU in East Orange - sometime in the late nineties.
Avatar 10:57am Listener Gregory:

My strongest memory of Howard Johnson is him playing the Jimi Hendrix part in the Gil Evans Hendrix sessions (Voodoo Chile, I believe).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am coelacanth∅:

rest in peace, Howard Johnson
Swag For Life Member 11:00am zzz:

hey JG! just listened to big john patton “memphis to new york spirit” last night and features their organ version of man from tanganyika, cool to tune in and hear original today on here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Jeff Golick:

Oh yeah, @zzz - serendipity strikes again!
Avatar 11:02am hyde:

i always forget about Howard Johnson playing with The Band a bunch. He's even onstage during The Last Waltz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am doctorjazz:

OK, made it back for Andrew Hill.
  11:05am Mark R:

I'm wondering if this Andrew Hill cut is part of the glut of material that he recorded that Blue Note wouldn't release, just because they felt the market couldn't absorb as much music as he was producing. I know there were whole albums that sat in the vaults for decades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Jeff Golick:

Hey-o, @Mark R.! Yeah, Mosaic plumbed the Blue Note vaults for this set.
Avatar 11:06am Listener Gregory:

I have a concert DVD of Andrew Hill's band, and something happened to it, and now it won't play for love or money. (Insert non-smiley face here.)
  11:09am Mark R:

Just heard that Phil Spector died.
Avatar 11:09am DJpeterDE:

Bottom end riches! Reggie Workman! And Joe Daley alongside Johnson!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, seeing that, too, @Mark R. I'm gonna leave that for others to handle.
Avatar 11:11am DJpeterDE:

Mark R: don't forget that by the time this Hill was recorded, Andrew Lion was gone. Francis Wolff was dealing with corporate overlords.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am doctorjazz:

Saw Johnson a few times, with his band Gravity, with the Monday night Gil Evans band at Sweet Basil's, with The Band. Another sad passing.
  11:12am hyde:

Ah, Phil Spector. No one could wear a blonde afro wig like that guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am doctorjazz:

First became aware of him when I heard Taj Mahal's The Real Thing album, which just knocked me out.
Avatar 11:17am Listener Gregory:

In the first five years of Saturday Night Live, you could occasionally see snippets of Johnson soloing before the commercials.
Avatar 11:18am TDK60:

Docjazz: Yes, were talking about The Real Thing album yesterday on another show. My brother was there. The concert included Johnny Winter, Hot Tuna.
Swag For Life Member 11:19am spodiodi:

good morning, Jeff Golick and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Jeff Golick:

I sadly don't have that Taj Majal record -- or much else from him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am WR:

I've been aware and in awe of Howard Johnson since the early 70s, hearing him with Shepp and Taj Mahal and etc. on LP. I saw him with Gil Evans in summer 85 at one of the Monday night gigs doctorjazz mentioned. Sadly I realize that I have sometimes mixed him up with Bob Stewart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Jeff Golick:

Great to see you, @spodiodi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am doctorjazz:

TDK60, man, that would have been some concert to be at! (Didn't get to the radio much yesterday, worked and visited my daughter).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Artie:

Doffing my lurker’s cloak to say Good Morning, and Thanks for All That Jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Jeff Golick:

Well, @WR, they're both kind of obscured by the giant bell...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Jeff Golick:

@Artie! Nice cloak!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Artie:

Just saw that Ethan Iverson will be performing a live solo piano set next Saturday: indianhillmusic.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am doctorjazz:

Taj was my "gateway drug" to the blues, great stuff! (Of course, I have a box set of the complete Taj Mahal if you're interested, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am doctorjazz:

These tracks are GREAT! .(Those Special Edition albums WERE special...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @doc.
Avatar 11:30am Listener Gregory:

I have zero memory of Johnson playing on this record (Album Album). I guess I haven't heard it in 15 years.
  11:30am Mark R:

I have the one called "Audio Visualscapes," a double album from 1988. I hadn't listened to it in years and took it out a couple of weeks ago and had my mind blown all over again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Uncle Michael:

Sorry for the slow response, right, no more Hinky Dinkys, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am doctorjazz:

I'm didn't remember it either, LG, and had trouble hearing him in there today.
Avatar 11:33am DJpeterDE:

He's on baritone horn (not tuba) I believe (on New Orleans Strut)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am doctorjazz:

Ahhhh, makes sense, thanks DJpeterDE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Artie:

Mmmmmm.
  11:36am Mark R:

One of my favorite live albums of all time, and I think the horns really added a lot. Oh wow, and now this great Archie Shepp track, you're really hitting on some of my fave Howard Johnson tracks this morning, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Jeff Golick:

HoJo's oeuvre makes it hard to go wrong!
  11:38am Mark R:

Forgive me for joining this conversation late, but am I to understand you won't be doing your show any more, Uncle Michael?
  11:39am Mark R:

True, but you've gone so very very RIGHT, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Uncle Michael:

This Archie Shepp is kicking my ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Jeff Golick:

No no no, @Mark! Was just talking about the stores, not the UM show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Jeff Golick:

God forfend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Uncle Michael:

No, Mark...there are no more Hinky Dinky SUPERMARKETS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am doctorjazz:

This Shepp is HOT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Uncle Michael:

You make me blush, Jeff.
  11:40am Mark R:

Oh whew! I had assumed the stores were long gone, and we never had them in my part of the country anyway! See how rumors get started?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am doctorjazz:

(I did get to see that incarnation of The Band with the gotten section)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am doctorjazz:

*horn section...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Uncle Michael:

Escalator is such a cool album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

Kinda hard to squeeze it in, tho, @UM.
Avatar 11:43am Der Storkler:

Marchin' up and down to Shepp in the Stork Club foyer here, getting ready like freddy for the customers to arrive. Get yer hand stamped here: wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:43am DJpeterDE:

This is the only show I can think of that might play just side 6 of Escalator
Avatar 11:44am Der Storkler:

Was that Linda Ronstadt with Carla?
Avatar 11:45am Der Storkler:

Whoops! By bye Phil Spector!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am doctorjazz:

Carla Bley's early albums were all really fine. I read somewhere an interview with her where she disavows those albums, says she really didn't know what she was doing on them, learned more as she went on. May be true, but they had a spark that some of her later stuff lost
Avatar 11:46am DJpeterDE:

Stork: I believe that was indeed Ronstadt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Jeff Golick:

Yah, @Stork: "Voice [Ginger] – Linda Ronstadt
Voice [Leader] – Carla Bley
Voice [Men] – Bob Stewart, Howard Johnson, Sam Burtis, Timothy Marquand, Tod Papageorge
Voice [Women] – Jane Blackstone, Nancy Newton, Pat Stewart, Rosalind Hupp, Sharon Freeman, Sheila Jordan
Yodeling [Yodelling Ventriloquist] – Howard Johnson"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Jeff Golick:

"Side 6" - such a crazy concept in and of itself!
Avatar 11:47am Der Storkler:

What an amazing record is Escalator!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am doctorjazz:

The Moses is another I haven't heard in ages.
Avatar 11:48am Listener Gregory:

There is a belated release of Bob Moses' Home In Motion, which includes Howard Johnson, from a 1979 recording (Also Eddie Gomez, Joanne Brackeen, Jeanne Lee, a 12-tet). It is on his Ra-Kalam Records, and I got a copy from the Downtown Music Gallery. Heard it once and it seems to be good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am coelacanth∅:

yes. " bye bye" is about the best i can do in regard to phil specter.
Avatar 11:51am Der Storkler:

Joe Daley was - i believe - Rich Hazelton's first live guest ever on the Carcass in Esst Orange - again - late 90's. WFMU: Tubas R Us!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Jeff Golick:

I'll look for that, @LG. I like much of Moses's stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:
