Avatar 12:16pm Mary Wing:

Good morning, chresti! Anyone on the courts right now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Ike:

@Mary Wing, chocolate snobs like me would fear such an occurrence as a possible curse rather than a good sign. Hershey's is the worst name-brand chocolate on Earth (I have to specify "name-brand" because of shitty dollar-store Easter bunnies).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Ike:

I would if I had any! There is very little in the world better than a nice Valrhona bar (not too pricey at Trader Joe's) or Callebaut. Good chocolate and green tea make life worth living.
  12:28pm Jeff g. via app:

Scott reality paints a picture
Avatar 12:28pm Sem:

Isn't that just so, Hubig the P?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm David (in London):

I confess to once or twice, when visiting a friend in Chiswick, having wandered about so that I might 'accidentally' bump into Scott. Never did though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Handy Haversack:

Mourning doves are hilarious. And everything disturbs them. They're like bird sheep. Totally stunned by normal occurrences: eating, flying, landing, seeing other mourning doves. All occasion much hyperverbose commentary.
Avatar 12:29pm Really Lisa:

Well, they're done voting. He won't be able to steal, er hold office again.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm coelacanth∅:

hey Handy! David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Almost there, Lisa. The latest vote was a procedural thing. The big vote will happen later this afternoon, if there are no disturbances.
Avatar 12:33pm Mary Wing:

Yeah, Lisa, he will just incite his para-military wannabes to stir up trouble from now on.
  12:34pm Jeff g. via app:

HNY, Mary!
Avatar 12:34pm HyperDose:

The vote will be between 3-4pm. This is just a debate. The vote is expected to pass and Trump will most likely finish his term (the senate isn't likely to impeach him immediately)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm steveo:

@handy this you? twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Ike:

@RLisa@12:29, unfortunately doesn't that require a Senate conviction? Or no?
Avatar 12:36pm Really Lisa:

Woops, sorry Ken, all. Wishful thinking. Now they debate. Very sorry to mislead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Handy Haversack:

Whoa, steveo. Why am I Mr. Sparkle?
  12:37pm βrian:

A 2/3 senate conviction, so unlikely even if it's held by the new senate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm spodiodi:

fishbulb haversack?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Handy Haversack:

That's to convict and remove -- a majority vote can ban him from holding office again.

Yo, spodi! There's my answer, Fishbulb.

Hillbilly army gonna have trouble makin' the rent cuz they all being fired
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm spodiodi:

i was gonna call 'em cosplay crackpots, but i really like hillbilly army too
Avatar 12:41pm Really Lisa:

I really want to understand, how does Gym Jordan believe what he's saying. How does he, and Nunes, etc.. think out loud that what happened was just fine. I just don't understand. He's calling it a double standard, and politics.
Avatar 12:41pm Mary Wing:

Hillbilly army is an insult to hillbillies, though, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm steveo:

+1
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Phillippe Bastille:

what's the bird situation in the yard today, Handy? so far today I've seen a lone bufflehead, a crapload of mallards (I think that's the correct term), female downy woodpecker, a couple white throated sparrows, a pair of cardinals, a titmouse, a junco, and a chickadee. Several squirrels have spent so much time in the bird seed we are now referring to them as birds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm spodiodi:

i don't want the larpie crowd wrecking me either. i take that back. sorry
Avatar 12:43pm Mary Wing:

Yeah, they got *real* swords, coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm coelacanth∅:

Lisa they (drumpf supporters) don't believe what they say, for the most part. they are aware they are lying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm spodiodi:

plus real spells
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Handy Haversack:

Do not upset the LARPers! They *will* throw beanbags!

Phillippe, it's quiet out there for some reason -- I think a cat's been prowling about. Sparrows, doves, squirrels. Yesterday there were juncos and a titmouse and one of the lady cardinals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm steveo:

what no starlings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm coelacanth∅:

and about chocolate! chocolate connoisseurs like me could come up with many name-brand chocolates worse than hersheys without even thinking about it much
nestlé for starters; godiva; ghiradelli; russell stover; ferrero rocher (sp?)
and hersheys is one of the best ones to have with peanut butter (for whatever reason)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Handy Haversack:

It's weird, steveo! They congregate in the cottonwood two bldgs. over now that the leaves are gone -- by the dozen! And they come to my neighbor's when she puts out bread. But they totally ignore the seed I put out except in the spring when they had fledglings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Phillippe Bastille:

for some reason, notta lotta starlings here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm spodiodi:

  12:46pm David in London:

Oh no, ortolans! Cover your head with a napkin so God won’t see your shame when you eat one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Handy Haversack:

Way ahead of you, David!
Avatar 12:47pm Hubig Pie:

Speaking of birds, Ortolan was the forbidden fruit served at Babette's Feast
Avatar 12:48pm Really Lisa:

Ty, coel. I sit here shaking me head. Scary. Must tune it out for now. I will focus on the music, and chocolate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm steveo:

i guess the starlings have their own reasons, handy

i've been trying to feed the crows when they come around because i hear that they will bring you shiny things if you make friends with them, but so far i can't seem to get their attention
Avatar 12:50pm HyperDose:

@coelacanth∅ I enjoy Lindt and Chocolove. Both have great caramel flavors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Ike:

@coelacanth∅, chocolate flame war!!! But seriously, I'd say NONE of those are worse than Hershey's... well almost none. OK, I'll give you Russell Stover. You've got me there. Ghirardelli, are you kidding? That's like the least-worst American chocolate (or used to be, don't know about now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Handy Haversack:

Offer them shiny things, steveo. Crows have shown an understanding of gift exchange and reciprocity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Phillippe Bastille:

we had a big starling problem in our prior house. There was one that would pry the louvers off the bathroom vent and make a nest in the ductwork. invariably a stick or two would jam the fan and we'd be stuck until the babies took flight. One day I climbed in the shower and heard some rustling and little tiny bird mites started raining down on me. 1 outta 10, would not recommend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm steveo:

i shall, then
Avatar 12:53pm Mary Wing:

I saw a video on crows and their habits. There was one that brought tons of things to a little girl who fed them, it was really cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm steveo:

yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm coelacanth∅:

Hyperdose lindt is excellent, but not a strong chocolate flavor. i love the "dark" chocolate truffles, but i wouldn't call them dark!
very buttery.
  12:54pm David in London:

I feed the crows in my local park most lunchtimes. They recognise me now, and the minute I enter the park they flap along beside me to the usual feeding spot. Little buggers get through a ton of nuts though. They’re eating me out of house and home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Handy Haversack:

It is funny how often I end up recommending this book on WFMU boards! See The Wake of Crows, by van Dooren: cup.columbia.edu... (full disclosure, I was the production editor).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm WR:

Goddess Makeba!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm coelacanth∅:

and godiva is barely chocolate at all. it's mostly chemicals and... wax?
- oh, and the main ingredient: marketing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Webhamster Henry:

I visited the Lindt & Sprüngli factory in 1973, it was great fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Ike:

@coelacanth∅, wow. Lindt owns them, so you'd think it'd be passable. We can agree on Godiva though. Not sure it's worse than Hershey's, but it's not good.

@Mary Wing@12:41, agreed. Loads of hillbillies know better.
Avatar 12:57pm Mary Wing:

Hi Henry, happy 2021!

@coel, yes, Google tells me that happened in 1998. Maybe my positive memories of Ghirardelli date back to pre-1998 though it doesn't seem like it's been that long.

@Hubig, Callebaut, HELL YEAH

about nestlé, i can't speak of the quality of the chocolate because i can barely taste the chocolate in there.
(though the company's policies and ...well everything they do says greed, selfishness, profit before people, so it seems likely corners are cut at every point in the process)

i'm no tax accountant, but "A deduction for a contribution to a Canadian organization is not allowed if the contributor reports no taxable income from Canadian sources on the United States income tax return..." so it's probably reciprocal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Stanley:

Madorone - is that deranged Toblerone?
Avatar 1:17pm Mary Wing:

It's trapazoidal shaped, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm steveo:

if the moon were made of dark chocolate it would be a prism
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm steveo:

(as a matter of fact it's all dark)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm coelacanth∅:

if you bonzai a madorone into an elongated triangle it's a toblerone
Avatar 1:21pm Mary Wing:

Nicely done, steveo. Take your victory lap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm steveo:

i'd say it was divine inspiration, but that's the wrong chocolate brand

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm coelacanth∅:

(i understand @120, part 2)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm steveo:

that would be because it's nonsense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Stanley:

Michael - normally you would take the tax relief in the return of the country where the not-for-profit was based. So if I had US income, I would make the claim in my US return. In your example, if the US taxpayer paid tax on the Canadian income declared in the return, then a deduction would be allowable on the contribution to the Canadian organisation. Pretty generous, if you ask me as under the double tax agreement, the tax paid in the US on the Canadian income would be offset against tax paid in Canada. However, I suppose that tax offset would be less due to the deduction. Nevertheless, as far as I see, it would be the US missing out on collecting the tax on the donation to a Canadian charity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm steveo:

...just riffing, idk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Stanley:

Now, I've finished work.
Avatar 1:33pm Mary Wing:

Can we set up a Canadian branch of the station to qualify for our listeners up north?
Avatar 1:33pm Mary Wing:

It could be in Sem's shed, or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Phillippe Bastille:

I deem the Drummer Stream Canadian, eh?
Avatar 1:34pm Sem:

Figure out the details, Mary, and the shed's as good as yours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Handy Haversack:

We just need to find a Canadian charity that draws as much from USAian listeners as WFMU does from Canadians and set them up to reciprocate. Canoe.org maybe?

I guess I oughta eat something. Hrrrrrm.
  1:37pm manana:

that anderson song is going to need some relistens-love archives
Avatar 1:37pm Sem:

Well, there is a digital news tax deduction. I read a leftie paper from the west coast, The Tyee, and my monthly donation to them is tax deductible. Not sure of what rate, but some of it, anyway.
So, FMU being a 501 3(c) educational charity is THAT much of a leap, right? Right?.

CMFU in Mount Hope, NS, Ken?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

(Er, CFMU is taken.)
Avatar 1:39pm Mary Wing:

Hi Manana! Archives, for everybody doing other things!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Handy Haversack:

OK, Mount Hope is in Ontario and CMFU is available.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Stanley:

Funny you should say that Mary, as I've considered doing the very same in the UK, setting up a charity with the object to support Auricle Communications so that WFMU could benefit from the tax paid on donations by British listeners. The system works differently here as it is the charity itself which makes the claim rather than the taxpayer receiving relief. I thought also we could ship the swag en masse to save shipping costs but it's likey to attract import tarrifs, as opposed to the individual parcels which come in under the value thresholds.
Avatar 1:40pm Mary Wing:

What about CWFM?
Avatar 1:41pm Mary Wing:

I applaud your thinking, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm David (in London):

I once climbed Mount Hope with no oxygen and no Pringles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Ike:

@PB, are you attempting to goad Canada into annexing Pittsburgh from Annapolis? That's a pretty complicated geopolitical maneuver.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Stanley:

Sad to say but....it's my job, this sort of business.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Handy Haversack:

Even better, Mount Hope, ON, is outside Hamilton! It's all coming together!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm coelacanth∅:

steveo if it's nonsense then i should've understood that it's nonsense!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Wasn't Master of Nonsense an EP planned by Lars Ulrich but ultimately cancelled due to the virus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm steveo:

the house don't mean nothin; only how many senate votes (right?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm David (in London):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Phillippe Bastille:

Exactly. When I moved many moons ago, my turntable got damaged beyond repair. I had transitioned to CDs at that point so I never replaced it. I found a nice replacement last year at a thrift store last year and have only been using it for my old stuff.

Oh, the What We Do in the Shadows: The Series theme song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Handy Haversack:

Nice! Great choice, Mary!

steveo, I'll dial "91," and when you say so, I'll dial the other "1."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Phillippe Bastille:

Ah, I did not realize this was a stand-alone song! They use it as the theme to What We Do in the Shadows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm steveo:

that was a little while ago, but thanks :D
Avatar 2:06pm Mary Wing:

Is that show any good? I liked the movie, but haven't checked out the series.

It's excellent, Mary. Top notch.

"Ismay" = "Mis" in Pig Latin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm coelacanth∅:

this song (the original) always reminds me of a Tim Buckley song

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Mary most excellent. One of those shows that actually gets better instead of getting stale. And the presence of Matt Berry only makes things betterer.

i missed that 3ok but it's been played on fmu a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Ike:

Why no comments on that show, @Mary? Flame war? Spam? Russian disinformation?

in my dreams i have a dog named minki
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Handy Haversack:

Joe McG played "Illusion" on March 23, and I was there ... but those were heady times.

is all of munki that good or even half of it?
Avatar 2:27pm Mary Wing:

I remove comments from the playlists (eventually), Ike, since I consider the archives for music only, not what we chatted about on that day. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm steveo:

good idea; destroy the evidence :)
Avatar 2:28pm Mary Wing:

I like Munki overall, yeah, I have a lot of 4-star ratings in my iTunes for it, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm David (in London):

Mary, do you know The Shangs version of Street That Rhymes at 6am? Super good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm coelacanth∅:

all of munki is better than 1/2 as good as that song; and some songs are straight-up awesome
Avatar 2:30pm Mary Wing:

I don't know it, David, so thanks for the recommendation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Ike:

You shouldn't have told me that, now I'll feel free to say even DUMBER things than I already do! I thought all my mindless blather would be set in electronic stone for all eternity. So does this mean I can talk about my plan to hang the Galactic Emperor upside-down by his toenails and sic thinning-shear-toothed flying turtles on him?
