Be shaken. Be stirred. A whimsical wham-bam of exotic enchantments, sleazy oddities, pop fancies, and swingin’ slingers broadcast from Ridgewood, NYC’s very own Shangri-Lounge. Best served chilled, garnished with signature swizzle schtick.

Hiya, DJ Shangri-Va-Va, Crew, all!
Avatar 6:04pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yes! Hey, Pauly!! How's it hangin'?
Avatar 6:05pm Scott67:

G'day Shangri-la, Pauly & Lounge Lovers. β€πŸ·πŸΊπŸΉπŸŒ΄πŸ—Ώ
Avatar 6:06pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Hey Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Pauly from Clifton:

@DJ Shangri-Va-Va, that Johnny Faro was the perfect soundtrack as I sent my last work email of the day! Time to hang out.

@Scott67, I hope the new year is treating you and Gus well!
Avatar 6:08pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Ha! That's perfect. Time to punch out, and tune in!
Avatar 6:12pm Scott67:

va-va voom!! 🍸🐾 GUS & I are doing well Pauly, thanks. Things are under control here in Australia, for now. Hope you are safe & well where you are mate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm WR:

Time (and the WFMU schedule) keeps moving on and I can hardly keep up. I understand we have to order food in order to be allowed to loiter. Beer & cheese platter with sone of those little pickles for me.
Avatar 6:15pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Oh yes. It's also a two-drink minimum, WR. I'm afraid we don't have beer. Shirley Temples or Dirty Shirley's, only.
Avatar 6:15pm shangri-va-va-voom:

This is a classy establishment.
Avatar 6:17pm Scott67:

WR, let me get this one, I just grabbed a beer, & there's cheese& a jar of Dill Pickles in the fridge too. 🍻
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Otis Fodder:

Have you tuned in while I'm moving around the place, cooking to clearing space.

Hi Shangri and fellow folks!
Avatar 6:17pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Hey Otis! Think yer gonna like this one.
Avatar 6:19pm Scott67:

Hey Otis! One day I will wake up at 3am & listen to your show live mate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Otis Fodder:

I like all so far. Santo & Johnny are always a dream. This one, Stalkin' is a scorcher! Won't be much on chat, moving into the kitchen, but listenin'... making some veggie dogs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Otis Fodder:

Ha Scott! Sleep first pal. But if you can't sleep one night, pop into chat and I'm sure the others and I will keep you awake with talk of food. Usually conversations in Sheena's end up talking about what's for dinner.
Avatar 6:20pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Nice! Enjoy them dogs.
Avatar 6:20pm shangri-va-va-voom:

(Hope I didn't offend our friend Gus.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm WR:

As it is a classy establishment, I'll take some Dirty Shirleys.

Thanks Scott67, if we tip big in advance they'll let us keep the beers.
Avatar 6:21pm Scott67:

Otis, send me the recipe! I've been wanting to make a meatless dog. I thought of using kidney beans as a base.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Otis Fodder:

I'm cheating, I have store-bought veggie merguez dogs and picked up some buns from the bakery, super fresh. 3 dogs and a rum n coke on the bill. Back towards the end of the show all full and moving slow.
Avatar 6:23pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Wow, I've never heard of anyone making homemade veggie dogs! Just burgers. I'd imagine you'd need a good mold. Or, I suppose you could roll them up. So many possibilities!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Otis Fodder:

Back in a bit. BTW - that logo and banner Shangri-La are tops!
Avatar 6:24pm Scott67:

Gus is good with any food talk, even veggies. 😎🐾
Avatar 6:25pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Thanks, Otis! Enjoy dinn!
Avatar 6:32pm Scott67:

Shangri, it will definitely be an experiment, or 10. I always like making up my own alternatives to "fast food".
Avatar 6:34pm shangri-va-va-voom:

in NYC, quite a few vegan "fast food" spots have opened up in recent years. it's grown at a very fast pace. i enjoy some of it! i try to avoid the stuff like fake chicken though. i'd much rather just eat a plate of beanz. i suppose if you are truly vegan, you are grateful to have it, however.
Avatar 6:40pm Scott67:

Yeah! I don't like the factory food idea of vegan. There's so many real alternatives to mimicking meat with muck. I'mean not even Vegetarian, but working on not eating meat ever or rarely. Cheese on the other hand I can't imagine not eating.
Avatar 6:41pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yeah, it certainly doesn't hurt to take a break from it here and there!
Avatar 6:48pm shangri-va-va-voom:

I'm HER!
Avatar 6:53pm Scott67:

I think I'm her too!? 😐
Avatar 6:54pm shangri-va-va-voom:

We've all been her at one time or another, amiright?
Avatar 6:54pm Scott67:

Or him!? I'm confused! πŸ˜†
Avatar 6:55pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Hahaha
Avatar 6:56pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Don Christy seems not to care, either way.
Avatar 6:57pm Scott67:

If only! I still console my ex when she breaks up with her current. 😬
Avatar 7:01pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Oh no, Scott! Maybe you will meet a fellow Australian on the WFMU board, and you can link up! It would be a great made-for-tv-movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

hey there, DJ Shangri-La and folx. Digging these sounds!
Avatar 7:02pm Scott67:

It feels like we're alone in this bar, I better stare at my shoes as usual.
Avatar 7:02pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Hey Granny, yesss. Hope you're having a groovy Tuesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Otis Fodder:

Ducking out to eat and watch some tube. Thanks for the first hour and soundtrack. And just when Granny arrives, hi Gran! Thanks Shangri and see ya Scott!
Avatar 7:03pm Domenic:

Looks like a nice playlist. So many rarities like "Congo Elegy" out there.
Avatar 7:03pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Ciao for now, Otis. Have a nice night!!
Avatar 7:03pm Scott67:

Ah Granny's here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

hey there, Scott! I sent you an email request, i want to talk "Australian music" with you for my new WFMU project!
Avatar 7:03pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Hey Dom!
Avatar 7:04pm Domenic:

Hi. Want to catch a bit, though more of listen while working.
Avatar 7:05pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Oh yes, no problemo!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm WR:

That James Arr Septette Congo Elegy is ok / nice sounds but the release I see on discog is quite unexpected: Scott Records with logo of Scottish terrier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Rich in Washington:

I'm listening while trying to teach myself Affinity Publisher.
Avatar 7:08pm HyperDose:

Optimal kitchen dancing music!
Avatar 7:08pm shangri-va-va-voom:

oh lordt, rich. good luck. but, i'm sure you are more than capable of all things tech!
Avatar 7:08pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yesss, Hyperdose. Grab that broom!
Avatar 7:09pm Domenic:

There is a Space Age category in Diskogs... pretty neat
Avatar 7:11pm shangri-va-va-voom:

What would we do without Discogs (as a society)?
Avatar 7:12pm Scott67:

Cool Granny's! Will hunt it down, Gmail seems to send all my WFMU mail to spam for some reason!? I'm happy to chat about what I know, but I'm certainly not authority on the subject of music like so many listeners are. But "alternative" is my taste, if that means not commercial crap.
Avatar 7:14pm Scott67:

Hah! Shangri I would watch that movie! 😎🎬πŸŽ₯
Avatar 7:15pm Scott67:

Hey Rich! Good luck!
Avatar 7:15pm Domenic:

Get Scott67 and Granny. Australian music project.
Avatar 7:16pm Scott67:

Cheers Dom!
Avatar 7:17pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Everyone's fav is King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, right? Ha.
Avatar 7:18pm shangri-va-va-voom:

I do work visas for international performing artists (mostly bands and DJ's), and I've done a fair share for Australians. But, I'm not sure they are all actually "good".
Avatar 7:20pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Here is some more Space Age for you Dom.
Avatar 7:21pm Scott67:

Shangri, they're pretty good, but there are so many bands about here now.
Avatar 7:21pm Domenic:

just looked it up. April Stevens is 91 years old..
Avatar 7:22pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yes, I believe she may have lied about her age at the beginning of her career, Dom! Something probably quite common.
Avatar 7:23pm Scott67:

Tigress!
Avatar 7:23pm shangri-va-va-voom:

I take that back. Actually, I've done visas for some cool Australians. After refreshing my memory. But, I cannot disclose their actual names.
Avatar 7:23pm shangri-va-va-voom:

There hasn't been a major slew of Australians in need of visas to tour America in recent times. *laugh-cries*
Avatar 7:26pm Scott67:

Strange that!? 😁😒
Avatar 7:27pm Domenic:

Would love to go to Australia.. but you know, bugs and snakes...
Avatar 7:27pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yes, I do wonder it could be!
Avatar 7:27pm shangri-va-va-voom:

The bugs and snakes would not be rampant in the cities, however.
Avatar 7:28pm shangri-va-va-voom:

I definitely would not want to encounter any giant spiders. But, I assume that's not generally an issue!
Avatar 7:28pm Scott67:

Some shit hot Aussie bands were around as I grew up. I reckon they'd resonate with WFMU listeners.
Avatar 7:30pm Domenic:

Granny, you should look up Paddy Harrison in Melbourne. If your looking for blokes in Australian also about Australian music. At least he could maybe introduce you to others.
Avatar 7:30pm Domenic:

Harrisson...two s'es
Avatar 7:32pm Scott67:

Dom, I'm nearly 54 & survived un-bitten so far.
shanGrizzly, re spiders; ask Otis to send you the photo of what's on my hand in my Facebook page. That was only a medium one.
Avatar 7:34pm shangri-va-va-voom:

I think I'm better off left in blissful ignorance.
Avatar 7:34pm Scott67:

1 S, Dom.
Avatar 7:34pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Bugs do not bother me. But, the eight-legged-ones get a very, very hard pass.
Avatar 7:35pm Scott67:

Hahaha! Just saw what auto correct did to your name Shangri. Kinda Freudian πŸ˜†
Avatar 7:36pm shangri-va-va-voom:

I am a hard and grizzled individual at age 32.
Avatar 7:37pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Having done much time in the clink. Luckily, being a convicted felon did not count against me in securing a spot on Sheena's.
Avatar 7:37pm Domenic:

Your a New Yorker!
Avatar 7:37pm shangri-va-va-voom:

The only place I applied for that responded to my resume.
Avatar 7:38pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Oh yes, I've been here for nine years now, I believe. I think they've raised the bar to ten. As for being a real "New Yorker".
Avatar 7:38pm shangri-va-va-voom:

(Previously, I think it was seven?)
Avatar 7:39pm shangri-va-va-voom:

My adult life has been spent here thus far.
Avatar 7:40pm Scott67:

I'm still scared of spiders but not snakes, only for Gus'so sake do I watch for snakes now. I just challenged myself to handle a harmless but huge spider I found in my bedroom one morning Then released it in the garden.
Avatar 7:40pm shangri-va-va-voom:

I personally find you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. (But, let's not find a way to relate this back to spiders, plz.)
Avatar 7:41pm Domenic:

You know... Lot a ladies present here at Sheena's
Avatar 7:42pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yes! It's great to be part of a lady-friendly station. With a name like Sheena's...
Avatar 7:43pm Domenic:

Queen of the Jungle. And LoriHajiTura is named after the Faster Pussycat ladies..You all pack a punch and LOL
Avatar 7:43pm Scott67:

Won't mention the Aussie bands Lime S..... then.
Avatar 7:44pm Scott67:

Loving this version of bang bang
Avatar 7:45pm Scott67:

I dropped my tablet before, now auto correct is going crazy!
Avatar 7:46pm Domenic:

There was a Betty Chung who did Bang Bang.. Singapore or Asian..
Avatar 7:47pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yes! Scott, there is a documentary on WFMU's site, "don't think i've forgotten cambodia's lost rock and roll"! And, it's so interesting. The soundtrack is very good, but it all requires an even deeper dive. Pan Ron was a major figure.
Avatar 7:47pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yes! That version is amazing! Betty Chung is from Hong Kong.
Avatar 7:47pm Scott67:

Dropped my tablet I realized can mean several things alluding to craziness. 😎 Will let you guys decide which.
Avatar 7:48pm shangri-va-va-voom:

But, I highly recommend that doc if you've got the time.
Avatar 7:48pm Domenic:

That doc is awesome, very sad too.
Avatar 7:48pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yes, it really is, Dom. Definitely added a lot of context for me. And, that's important.
Avatar 7:50pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Scott, I think I'd be more worried if "tablet" had been plural! ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm WR:

oh, wow. i have this Masekela LP but LPs have been in storage a long time and haven't heard it in an even longer time.
Avatar 7:53pm Scott67:

I will get on it! I'm interested in that whole SE Asian music cover scene. Vietnamese covers during the war are something that resonate with me. Given Australia's involvement in the conflict.
Avatar 7:53pm Domenic:

Abbe Lane sounds different on this track..
Avatar 7:53pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Cool! The Vietnamese music scene is something I need to take a deeper dive into. All in due time.
Avatar 7:54pm Scott67:

Love the current Dengue Fever band also.
Avatar 7:54pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Yes! They're great.
Avatar 7:54pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Perhaps it's a mislabel, Dom?
Avatar 7:55pm Scott67:

Sounded a tiny bit slow?
Avatar 7:56pm Domenic:

Looks like it was her.
Avatar 7:57pm Domenic:

Thanks and goodnight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Pauly from Clifton:

Thanks so much DJ Shangri-Va-Va-Voom! Great soundtrack for cooking! Have a great evening/afternoon, all!
Avatar 7:58pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Goodnight, Dom!
Avatar 7:58pm shangri-va-va-voom:

Thanks Pauly for listening!!
Avatar 7:59pm Scott67:

Too soon!! Thanks shangri! Awesome as usual! 😎🐾❀
