Ben Herson of Nomadic Wax and rapper Shiffai
Hear this show now:
Herson (a/k/a Nomad) has been investigating Senegal's burgeoning hip-hop scene and recording artists while there. He wrote an academic thesis exploring hip hop as a means of social and political expression in Senegal, and he's started the label Nomadic Wax to get the music out to the world.
Shiffai is a Senegalese rapper whose next album "The Chosen One" will be the first release for Nomadic Wax (to be followed by a Senegalese rap compilation, African Underground Volume One). He began rapping at age 13 and in 1993 conceived and became the lead MC for Dakar's Slam Revolution. He moved to New York in 2000. Shiffai means "The Remedy" in Arabic.
Shiffai will be performing at an African rap showcase produced by Herson with Toni Blackman and other African and American MC’s at the Five Spot, 459 Myrtle Ave in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn on Thursday Jan. 15.
