Greets all! Long time WFMU person, first time tuning into this program in ages....
Avatar 11:56am Really Lisa:

Hi David, super early because βrian posted link where I was lurking! Hope all is as well and safe as can be. Lovely photo btw <<<
Hi all. Taking a window seat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am chresti:

Hi David and continentals!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Threemoons:

Yep, ditto, here because of Brian
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am David Dichelle:

Early greetings, Threemoons, Lisa, and Chresti - and thanks βrian for posting that link!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm David (in London):

Hello David and assorted travelling groovers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Handy Haversack:

David and voyageurs! Hello!
Avatar 12:01pm Bas NL:

Hi David! Ticket in pocket, ready for the ride! Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Ike:

It's too bad it's so unusual to see a playlist open with four comments in a row from non-male persons (IIRC, I hope I am not misgendering anyone). Kudos, raising a glass to y'all, not for any particular reason, just because. And alla youse guys as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Carmichael:

Heya David. Looks like some of you scaled the walls and breached train a little early.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Handy Haversack:

Yay, Threemoons is here! Now it's a party!

Threemoons, I wanted to say that last March 14, right before everything shut down, we actually went to the JC Word! It's *huge*! We were like the dorkiest tourists in history. I think the staff kind of loved it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm David (in London):

Lisa, chresti, Handy, Carmichael!
Lisa, pop the cork on that bottle would you? I'll hand out the sandwiches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Carmichael:

Nice pic, Chresti.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm David Dichelle:

And welcome David, Handy, Ike, and Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm fred:

Hello David and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Threemoons:

@Handy aww, thank you! I really want to go to the JC branch--the Greenpoint branch is very nice and I love the staff and selections but bigger is always better with indie bookstores! Try to hit Book Culture LIC if you can one day--it's a huge 2-level affair.
Avatar 12:04pm Sem:

Hello, David, and all aboard. Love me some banjo tunes from the Continent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm YETI BOB:

Hey everybody! Nice to be here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Ike:

As someone who remembers the days when Borders Books ran rampant across the American landscape, "huge" isn't the first word that would come to mind for Word JC. So it's bigger than the one in Brooklyn then?
Avatar 12:04pm βrian:

Well, there is a certain louche appeal to the Drummer Stream sometimes. No FCC informers will mess with ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm WR:

welcome to the drummer stream Threemoons.

and hello to all the familiar and friendly avatars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Handy Haversack:

Lisa, chresti, Carmichael, Bas, Ike, and David in the Smoke!

Ike, I see what you're saying about Harrow and was confused for a while but trusted the process -- and once the reveal happened was quite taken with the device. I want to reread Gideon and Harrow back to back -- and want also to reread the Baru Cormorant books in order now that the last is come out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Threemoons:

More "before times" fun--go to PS1, peruse bookstore and award-winning periodicals section there, have a drink there, go to Xian Famous Foods (which burned to the ground right before the pandemic alas) and then go across the street to Book Culture. Finish up with a drink at Domine's Hoek LIC. Sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm David Dichelle:

And hello Fred, Sem, Yeti Bob, WR, and βrian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm David (in London):

Semulator, Count Yeti Bob, Brian.
Avatar 12:06pm Really Lisa:

David (iL), poured, handing out, and raising glass!
Hi Handy :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Stanley:

Whay-hey everyone.
(Makes undignified entrance waving six pack of cans)
I'm here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Ike:

Wow @3M, which Xian Famous Foods location burned down? I hope the others are all surviving.
Avatar 12:06pm βrian:

I almost worked at Border's when there was only one. It was a great store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Ike:

Oh I guess that must be LIC, duh. Need another cup of tea, I'm a little slow today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm YETI BOB:

Hey Stanley, I'll have one of those beers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Stanley:

Yeti - they are a bit shook up but very, very cold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm David Dichelle:

Stanley, that is the best kind of entrance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Stanley:

Hi David - it's the mood I'm in today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Handy Haversack:

Ike, yes, huge in comparison to Greenpoint's.

Hey, Stanley! Interesting piece on the Glenfinnan monument in the Guardian today. I remember seeing it first in 2009 when there was no visitor center or anything and the Harry Potter tourism was just starting up.

And, er, I'll take a can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Threemoons:

May I please ask an embarassing question? I only see the schedule for the "main" WFMU programming...is there a page that shows the schedule for GDR, Sheena's Jungle Room, etc? Can't seem to find it in my sleep-deprived state. Help please!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David (in London):

Stanley, can do you me a light & bitter?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm chresti:

Cheers David in London!
Thanks Carmichael, that's me in horror seeing the camera/flash bulb for the first time in a photo booth.
Avatar 12:10pm Sem:

Hello, DavidiL. Very much enjoyed the Numan piece. Thx for that.
Oh, oh, Stanley is in a mood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Threemoons:

@Ike, yeah, LIC--fire started in the Italian place next door IIRC and spread, propane tanks blew, and pyrotechnics ensued. Luckily nobody was hurt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm dutchtheo:

Hello David and travellers, on the bumpy road and the smooth subway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David Dichelle:

Hey there Dutchtheo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Ike:

@3M@12:09, others have been puzzled by this as well. The schedule pages *do* exist, but it's always hard to find the links.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David Dichelle:

Threemoons: For the Drummer schedule: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Threemoons:

VIVA ESTONIA! Thanks for this BTW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm David Dichelle:

Or just wfmu.org/drummer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm David Dichelle:

My pleasure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Threemoons:

@David but how would I get there from the wfmu.org main page? Is there a comprehensive programming list? Thanks!
Avatar 12:13pm monkeyz:

hello there david! found the bathtub in the train and enjoyed music in the bath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm chresti:

I signed up for the daily drummer schedule e-mail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey David, everyone. Checking in for a minute, sad to say I have to hop back off at the next station
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Handy Haversack:

Threemoons, hover over "Listen" and then over "Drummer Stream," and the schedule link appears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm David (in London):

Hey Phillippe.

Sem, thanks for that. Glad you enjoyed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Threemoons:

Fun fact about the character "õ"--it's a vowel unique to spoken Estonian; it is in no other language on Earth. Hard to explain how it sounds--tongue against the back teeth but clear of front teeth; kind of pronounced like the long middle e in "Eeeew"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Threemoons:

@Handy thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm chresti:

Happy New Year, David D, and everyone I missed in the last few days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Stanley:

Thanks Handy, I didn't catch that.
But let's remember a huge portion of 18th-19th century Scottish wealth was based on the plantations in the West Indies and America. The article makes it look like that's 'news'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Stanley:

A cheap lager, David? No problem, coming up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Ike:

@3M, I get the vague impression that there have been discussions behind the scenes about that front-page layout vis-a-vis the schedules.

The other two stream schedules, for those who prefer direct links:
wfmu.org...
wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Threemoons:

@Handy not getting a popup??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm YETI BOB:

it's hard to find the schedules for the side streams. i've spent a long time searching the site for these
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm WR:

wfmu.org...

the listen section near the top of this page has "info" links to the alt stream schedules and the broadcast stream in the programming section.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Threemoons:

@Ike, thanks, I hope that they make a better consolidated schedule.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm YETI BOB:

at the top of the playlist it says "Thursdays Noon - 3pm (EST) | On WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio" - that link will take you to the schedule
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Handy Haversack:

I think the news is that the NTS will actually incorporate that into its exhibits. This is NOT how public monuments tend to get treated here, Stanley. Especially not ones with so much romantic attachment to them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm YETI BOB:

but I think this could be made a bit easier to find - it's becoming an FAQ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Threemoons:

Aaah thx.
Avatar 12:19pm StringOFperils:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Threemoons:

@String ugh. I lived in London 88-89 and I remember just how much awful homophobic dust she kicked up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Monkeyz, Phillippe, String, and Hubig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Stanley:

I agree, String. If it was privately paid for that's a different matter.
All together now "I'm in love with Margaret Thatcher etc"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm YETI BOB:

My guess for this week's Random Road: Singapore
(still can't believe Handy got it right last week!)
Avatar 12:22pm StringOFperils:

So many people sleeping rough these days, with a pandemic on top of it. It's an obscenity fire.

Going back to the Gambia, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David (in London):

My Random Road guess this week is Chile.
Yo again Spod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Handy Haversack:

Yo, spodi. Another day!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Carmichael:

I will say Egypt.

I'm gonna go with Grenada again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm David (in London):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm David Dichelle:

Glad you liked the selection, Lisa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm spodiodi:

Threemoons, guessing he and K8 are guarding the car from street-cleaning ticket police
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm David Dichelle:

Greetings, Lewis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm chresti:

Still morning here, by lunchtime I'll be at work to cover a co-worker's afternoon shift at the tennis courts.
Avatar 12:35pm βrian:

So car-sitting must be a niche job nowadays. In the NYC area, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Threemoons:

@Spodiodi ah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Threemoons:

@Brian if I didn't hate the idea of getting up before dawn, I could probably make a tidy sum on the side moving people's cars in the AM....hmmm....idea...
Avatar 12:39pm Hubig Pie:

And on that note I'm inspired to pick Senegal for this week's installment of Random Roads
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Threemoons:

This is gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm WillCrete:

Thanks David for this trip into Rantin' Laddie / Lord Aboyne! Really beautiful to move through the facets of a ballad in this kind of sequence. Glad to be tuning in and to learn that this kind of treatment of the ballads is a weekly feature here! Gonna have to check back into the archives for sure to catch on up! I've been making my way through singing the ballad tunes recorded Bronson’s volume “The traditional tunes of the Child ballads” over the past few months at home, and loved listening in to the variations in those you just presented. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm spodiodi:

i think there's a Seainfeld episode where George does just that, βrian and Threemoons.... it's also horrible in San Francisco (besides street cleaning, there's also a rule that requires moving a car every 72 hours, though that one isn't as strictly enforced (unless someone complains) i had a great spot for that.) i don't miss that *having moved out of the city in October) -- it's nice to have a driveway again

Homer: "M'Bira!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Threemoons:

@Spodiodi I feel blessed that I was able to sell my last car back in '95. My brother, who used to live on Douglass Street in Brooklyn, needed a car for work. His employer said that they would pay for up to 3 parking tickets a month. My brother was running up 3 alternate side tickets a WEEK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Threemoons:

Another booming niche economy right here in Astoria--people who rent a level of a multi-family house that has a garage but don't have a car--they sell off their parking space on a monthly basis. If a key is needed, usually the LL gets a cut also.
Avatar 12:48pm Really Lisa:

Lol, spodi re Seinfel, and hi. There is! He fills in for the guy who normally does it. Chaos ensues.. also the 'these pretzels are making me thirsty' episode.
Avatar 12:49pm Really Lisa:

oops *Seinfeld
Avatar 12:50pm βrian:

Most houses in my area have a garage, but few use them for cars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm spodiodi:

wow, that must have really gotten expensive quickly, Threemoons! I didn't need a car in the city, and didn't have one most of the 25 years i spent there (motorcycles and scooters are much better :) though, i was glad to have it when we moved (and had found a spot where i could let my car sit for weeks, months, even over a year once(!) -- on a really steep hill without street cleaning)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm spodiodi:

aloha, Lisa :) that's right, that is the same episode as the pretzels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm spodiodi:

haha The New York Post listed the "pretzels" line as one of "Seinfeld's 25 greatest contributions to the English language." ... *clap clap clap*

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm WillCrete:

@Hi David- I’ve just been singing a ballad for 30 or so minutes each evening while putting our 2 month old daughter to bed. The long ballads with their repeated melodies seem beautifully suited for that kind of zone…. even if some of the subject / thematic matter might be a bit intense and heavy, to put it lightly, ha! (Bronson’s book is kind of the musical companion to Child’s work, collecting all the known transcriptions and published melodies associated with a given ballad). Last night was am 18 stanza version of “Babylon, Child no 14.,first published in 1827 in Kinloch’s Ancient Scottish Ballads as “The Duke of Perth’s Three Daughters. Broson’s work assembling all these materials is great and deeply scholarly, but no doubt it would be lovely to have a physically smaller edition which was laid out for actual use by singers, with the melody notation and text consistently on the same page, and perhaps some nice illustrations as well to make the page look pretty for the kids to look at… but as far as I know, no one has ever published such a thing).

Will: That is a lovely idea, and of course she won't be too upset by any of the more gruesome tales for a while anyway. I think we had Child 14 as Roud 27, quite a while back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Carmichael:

Do you have 14 children David?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm David (in London):

Hey Sylvia.

Stanley - It's even brass monkeys down here in The Smoke, so it must be bitter up your way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Stanley:

David - it's supposed to warm up from Sunday.

@dutchtheo - speaking of Benin, this is a fantastic album "Legends of Benin" analogafrica.bandcamp.com... - have you heard it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm David Dichelle:

Hey Spod, thanks for that man. Very glad you liked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Carmichael:

@chresti, nope, back to normal hours. We're buried in PPE and COVID related cleaning services, so my workload has greatly decreased.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm chresti:

That's good. Not understaffed? Seems like a lot of tennis employees are not coming to work, mostly because they have kids, I think.

Well, crimson roses, according to the Russian version in any case. We have raccoons in the woods here now, speaking of bioglobalization.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Webhamster Henry:

That's some deep mbira-ing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm YETI BOB:

At a lecture demonstration I once attended in Seattle, Washington, Dumisani
Maraire, a visiting artist from Zimbabwe, walked onto the stage carrying a round-
box resonator with a fifteen-key instrument inside. He turned toward the audi-
ence and raised the round-box over his head. “What is this?” he called out.
There was no response.
“All right,” he said, “it is an mbira; M-B-I-R-A. Now what did I say it was?”
A few people replied, “Mbira; it is an mbira.” Most of the audience sat still
in puzzlement.
“What is it?” Maraire repeated, as if slightly annoyed.
More people called out, “Mbira.”
“Again,” Maraire insisted.
“Mbira!” returned the audience.
“Again!” he shouted. When the auditorium echoed with “Mbira,” Maraire
laughed out loud. “All right,” he said with good-natured sarcasm, “that is the
way the Christian missionaries taught me to say ‘piano.’ ”
Paul F. Berliner, The soul of mbira.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm YETI BOB:

That story is from Paul F. Berliner, "The soul of mbira." But I came across it in a book called "Music: A Mathematical Offering" where the mbira is analyzed from a physics/acoustics perspective. I've never seen the Berliner book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm David Dichelle:

We're now in the Ndebele (Southern Zimbabwe) part of the segment.

There's a free PDF version of the math/music book on the author's website: homepages.abdn.ac.uk...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, YB, looks like quite a tome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm YETI BOB:

You can take a look and see if it's accessible to you. But I think it would help to be familiar with a bit of calculus and differential equations to get much out of it. There are cool pictures and quotes throughout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm YETI BOB:

To be clear, those links are two different books - first one about mbira, which I haven't read (yet) and second one about music and math which is the free PDF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm coelacanth∅:

i confess i did not know this aspect of zimbabwean music.
