Revenge is Sweet

Comment: Attila was Billy Joel's pre-fame heavy organ duo. Sometimes they're pretty amazing, sounding a little like Brainticket, a little like proto-Oneida; but mostly they were incredibly insipid (Billy Joel himself called it "psychedelic bullshit" - but there's really nothing very psychedelic about it). Billy's shouting was sometimes inspired in its gleeful abandon, but for the most part it just shone a light on the reactionary paranoia that would be a staple of his pop years catalog. Here's the complete lyrics, lovingly transcribed by myself for yours. ATTILA – “Revenge is Sweet” Revenge is sweet, at last I’ve overcome defeat I said I’d win somehow I had to wait, ah but look – huh! I’ll retaliate! Ah, see who’s laughing now! I can spit on those who call me names I’m a phoenix rising from the flames Revenge is sweet, at last a victory complete I drink it in like wine I’m done with years of pain, tasting bitter tears This moment is divine I was told “don’t even try” Look again you fools, I’ll touch the sky People laughed at me and said I’d never win Now I turn around and kick your faces in I Kick Your Faces In! Revenge is sweet, and now I’ll make you kiss my feet Admit that you were wrong. You see, you fools, I’m gone, I’ve broken all the rules It’s taken me so long I can spit on those who call me names I’m a phoenix rising from the flames Oh, revenge is so sweet.

Comment: Gosh, it seems like in 1970, everyone was flirting with the Evil King of Darkness! Mostly, it seems that meant stabbing naked ladies onstage, a practice shared by Black Widow and Coven. Interestingly, both bands quickly dyed their black roots with something a little sunnier in presentation. Of course, if the music be the judge, these bands are both about as scary as my Aunt Bonnie
