CHITLIN FOOKS PERFORM LIVE

Yeah, there's something fundamentally awkward about a country waltz with an "ein zwei drei" count-off: therein lies the charm at the heart of Dutch/Belgian hybrid CHITLIN FOOKS (pron "Folks"). Singer/guitarist Carol Van Dyk has taken a break from her day-job in Bettie Serveert (our guests last summer) to join Pascal Deweze of Belgium's Sukilove and Metal Molly. Together, they've taken dialect lessons from Leadbelly, thrown hootenanies in Flatbush, and forced a melancholic tear from WFMU's notoriously stoical Love Room Moose.

Carol & Pascal have been doing this Americana Back Porch kind of thing for about 6 months now, and already they've got the gumption to cover Kitty Wells & Webb Pierce and Washington Phillips - and Paul Simon (!?). Here's what they did - with no reverb and just a coupla room mics:

  • Not Enough Tears
  • The Battle
  • Juanita (Gram Parsons)
  • Mother's Last Words to Her Son (Washington Phillips)
  • You Dream of Him
  • Picturebook Memories
  • How Many Times
  • Poncho's Lament (Tom Waits)
  • 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover (Paul Simon)
  • One Week Later (Kitty Wells & Webb Pierce)
Carol & Pascal both played acoustic guitars & sang;
Pascal played the WFMU Toy Piano on One Week Later;
Chris Stubbs played The Engineer;
and Chris, Scott and Maria played the happy lapdogs at the foot of the porch.
Thanks everyone....
