b/art's Playlist for Maandag, 27, December 1999 (17:30 - 20:00)
180 "songs" in 90 minutes* oops - Fell 16 songs short of my goal of 180 in 90 minutes. If any of you feel cheated by this performance please let me know. *[ Fast Food[l]: "History of Music" 30-second decontextualized sonic morsels is all we need to feel that we are comprehending the full range of emotions and strategies of noise arranged in the form of music when indeed all we are doing is consuming or conquering these instants All of this to feel that we are maintaining the illusion of remaining proudly afloat the tidal wave of consumptive pop culture. In the future now. We can listen to 4 musical sound sources simultaneously and distill each of their various messages of purpose. But that does not mean we appreciate each of their individual qualities. It means we feel the need to remain vigilant and omnipresent for fear that the material processes and consumptive signals of "progress" are passing us by. This then is a controlled random selection of a century of music which is just as valid as any other. Since we experience music just as much as a random incursion as a pre-selected soundtrack to accompany our lives. It is neither logical nor timeline-defined, commercial nor (totally) taste- or esteem-based, nor necessarily obscurity- or familiarity-driven. In other words, it was an attempt to physically produce a show where 180 pieces of pieces of music were presented in a limited time period of 90 minutes in an attempt to comment on a sound-byte-driven culture which admires the quick swallowing of hype and promotes shallow vibe-surfing in an effort to maximize a feeling of disequilibrium while pretending to alleviate that very gut feeling. Question: If transactions and services are getting speedier, if being waited on is taking less time and computers, electronic transactions are getting faster then why aren't we digging out or discovering or accumulating more and more free time. And why does it still take some 10 working days to clear a check?] Thank you for a year [year 14] of listening to Wreck This Mess - strategic psychotopographies without all polemical speed bumps. Thanks to Nina in general (and specifically for this show) as well as Black Sifichi and 1000 others. | |
