Adventures in UNsound: no. 20: Silence - Listen to Conflict [ 20th broadcast for Wreck from the unused projection room of the Bellevue Cinerama overlooking the Schouwburg Theatre ] "War is a social phenomenon of capital interest because all those who engage in it may earn a pure and complete objectification and thus reach the corpse state ... but war does not provide a solution because often one is not killed." (§§) Moment of Silence: Worldwide moment of silence for peace in Balkans, May 24. Hundreds of thousands of people come together at one moment in time, exactly 17.00 Greenwich Mean Time = 9.00 San Francisco, 12.00 NY, 14.00 Rio, 18.00 Amsterdam, 19.00 Kosovo, 20.00 Moscow, 1.00 Tuesday in Beijing ) I stopped my show - all the noise and sound ground to a halt - as I put on a piece "written" by John Cage called 4' 33" and here performed by Frank Zappa. I played 2 mins. and 45 secs of the total piece. It is a composition about silence, filled with silence. for me, using this composition made the action into a fusion of art, concern and the feeling of empowered impotence. A gesture, in other words. The piece was done at the initiation of http://www.MomentofSilence.org/ which stated that "it isn't a statement against NATO, or against the Kosovars, or against the Serbians. It is not about national borders and governments at all - it is about the value of individual human life and liberty. It is a gesture of peace and good will for all men, women and children." | |
