Adventures in UNsound: no. 2 / Space vs Dub [Second broadcast for Wreck from new spacious studios in the Schreierstoren (Tower of Tears), near the Central Station] [Space & Dub are intimately related. The great dub producers created unique musical values, which among other elements includes big hypnotic gaping furrows of silent space between notes. Slowed to a yogi's pulse, held like an inhaled breath of ganja smoke, so that each note, each thrump shakes and shivers all of its echo and effects out of its system. (I think also of Miles Davis' interminable breaths between trumpet bleats). These empty spaces seem to require interminable amounts of time and imagination to traverse. These synaptic sectors of silence serve as the exposed orifices as the new internalized universes, the tympanic playgrounds for producers to play in and listeners to frolic in; the deep breathing space where contemplation and invention thrive.] | |
