[a] My guest tonite was Jasper from Dubmission dubmission@btinternet.com out of London who is putting together some of the more intriguing dub, post dub, throb & dub, space dub, and speed dub out there. Definitely some delirious hybrids. Not for purists but definitely for those who crave the way new sounds crawl deliciously into your ear. Their first compilation was called "Mashing Up Creation" and is one of the most finely crafted compilations around. Nary a bad cut. Dubmission is a small label and Jasper basically travels with a few cd carrying cases and is a one man label, a Johnny Appleseed with a deep abiding interst in dub. His tastes in dub run deep and wide, from roots through the dub masters [Far I, Sherwood & Perry] through to the speedy and acidy dub of his latest compilation "Dubbed on Planet Skunk" which includes Zion Train, Doof, Dub Trifle Dubolition, Lithium6 and Alpha & Omega. A nice night of spinning that went into 2 hours because the dj after my show lost track of time and was an hour late. Perfect, because dub needs really expansive fields of time to evolve and unravel.
[1] "More Bass Than Space" is the next compilation of stretchy elegant post-dub material meticulously chosen by the Dubmission crew. And these are some of the cuts.
[2] "Fusebox" is original compositions by Bollywood film music composer, Jolly Mukherjee. The original tracks were then remixed and mangled to uneven effect. Interesting nonetheless, with remixes by State of Bengal, the Underwolves, and the Madras Magician.
[3] As I heard it from guest dj, Jasper, he asked Adrian Sherwood for a piece and Adrian offered this but said it was by Dub Syndicate. The only thing stamped on the white label 45 is 'Etherealities / Dub Syndicate'. But later it turns out to be an old Singers & Players track and is here further beautified [carved even deeper] by Assassin. Mysterious, beautiful and has the feel of a relic and yet it sounds every bit as modern [timeless] as anything out today. This also appears on the new compilation, "More Bass Than Space".
[4] From "Prince Far I & Suns of Arqa Live" I think this dates from 1981 or so. Prince Far I in top form. One of the great voices - Rasta Satchmo? - where the mere resonance of his voice gets you going. http://www.straightline.co.uk/arqa
[5] "Just Landed" On ~scape, the same label as Pole and in an interesting hybrid, takes the genius minimal blips, pops, and scratches utilized by Pole and filters them into this dub material. www.scape-music.de info@scape-music.de
[6] Black Solidarity Records
[7] "Boat To Progress" on Shanachie
[8] "Full Up: Best of Studio One vol. 2"
[9] "Atone 3" on K Grind, an Australian label.
