[1] "In Search of the Surface Noise" on Sprawl Imprint douglas@benfo.deomn.co.uk
[2] Obscure minidisc from jdk productions jdkprod@xs4all.nl which includes no information, no address, no nothing and not even information about where it is leading. Compelling ambiences nontheless. More later. Write jdk to be put on their list to be notified about "interesting events", events involving noisemakers, musicicians, sound sculptors and various bleating polemicists who fall off the usual pop tympanic maps at places like STEIM and de Ijsbreker in Amsterdam.
[3] Recorded live from my pad on New Year's Eve. Nice secure and safe location as me and my social navigator "bunkered" down having both been traumatized/scarred by fireworks in our pasts. Don't ask. Or do.
[4] "The Sounds of Music a Gogo" on Special / Studio 33
[5] ] "Clara Nostra" on Pogus http://www.taojones.com/pogus.htm is a reworking of a piece for 106,476 clarinets oringinally released on sound of Pig as "Horn & Hard Acts." The original recording of 4 separate clarinet tracks, as the liner notes note, was bounced back and forth between the 4 track, an 8 track and a 2 track, slowed up, speeded up and generally bounced and rebounced so that the end result technically was the 100,000 plus clarinets.
[6] "The Heretic of Ether" by Badawl on Asphodel www.asphodel.com is an eclectic and fascinating exploration of numerous contemporary musical strategies. The effect is dazzling and schizoidal and ultimately begins to feel of a piece in a world so impatient that the future is already considered the past by some.
[6a] "Ontspanning / Rust / Energie" on Natura Sana is a great record to sample to help counter the invasion of ever more sounds into every piece of space. It is relaxation therapy at its simplest - except that it is in Dutch.
[7] "Relay" on KK / Nova Zembla / Radical Ambient kknz@kkrecords.be is technological music for a movie stuck in a bad future. A strange tension between precise and frantic beats and lulling muzakical neuronscapes. jn@link.be
[8] "Lili Marlene" on Cameo 1983. The sexiest woman with a lisp ever.
[9] "Site of Sound: Of Architecture & The Ear" on Errant Bodies Press www.smartartpress.com is a book/cd edited and compiled by sonic explorers Brandon Labelle & Steve Roden. This is a very ambitious package of writings and musical investigations on how sound defines space and vice versa. It also applies the Situationist notion of the dérive which set out to discover the hidden characteristics of a city and redesign a city based on the demands of dreams and intuitive wandering. This is the strategy employed here. Theoretical and engaging. Writing & sounds by Alison Knowles, Christof Migone, Hildegard Westerkamp, Leif Ellgren, Toshiya Tsunoda, David Dunn, CM von Hausswolf and other luminaries on the urban outskirts where there are no curbs, no shoulders, no parking spaces, no speed limits to sound. Achim Wollscheid is an artist, writer, teacher who is interested in the relation between sound, light, and architectural space. Hildegard Westerkamp, composer, educator, radio artist, is from Osnabruck and emigrated to Canada in 1968. "In the early 70s here ears were drawn to the acoustic environment as another cultural context or place for intense listening."
[9a] There will be demonstration in the Westermarkt on 29.01.2000 at 14.00 to protest the expected take over of the Kalenderpanden Squat [kraakpand] on the Entrepotdok. The Entrepotdok has featured some of the most interesting (unsanctioned) culture over its last 2 years of existence in the gentrifying neighborhood around by the Artis. There is a great need for alternative spaces where negotiations between locals, travelers and space is easily transacted. And now this space is threatened with eviction - woops there goes our station! - and to know that many many of the spaces and cultural venues [Paradiso & Melk Weg for 2] in Amsterdam were former squats now legalized. For more info check the Entrepotdok website http://squat.net/enterepotdok
[10] This is from the TAZ cd as read by Hakim Bey himself with ambiences by Bill Laswell that sometimes enhance the work. I find the synthetic noodling and ersatz Arab-esques less annoying than many other people both literary and sound-oriented. This along with TAZ and Kop Kulture [also on this cd - but you should hear the Sue Ann Harkey produced version!] form the guts of this post-situationist and prickly gnostic look at our hyped and hyperventilating culture that threatens to collapse inside it's own insistence on mediating, compromising, aesthetically legislating all human interaction via media. This is a call to arms or a call to putting down arms and withdrawing into clandestine potlatches and poker matches where people check their cell phones at the door. [11] "Crooklyn Dub Outernational Presents: Certified Dope, vol. 3" on Word Sound www.wordsound.com is the Consortium's "Escape From NY" strategy, meaning they got out into the international satellite cities. A bit outside themselves. What dub thrives on is syncretic infusions of other references. Hybridizing, a constant decentering of the expected and thisis what happens here. Their signature deep introspective existential-vs-holy waves of dub ripple outward to great effect. Inward and outward so that the deep scraping-the-bottom waves can stir up some new silt and mud. Excellent disc with works by Irish, English, Dutch (to great lower bowel shaking effect by Nijmegen's own Twilight Circus) Germany, Holland, New Zealand, Japan and Jamaica. This is the best propaganda that slow does not mean lethargic or boring. Because slow beats take longer to evolve there is the chance for faith h to take hold, for a reorientation of an impatient culture to anticipate every tidal wave of dub. Highly recommended. With among others: old cockpit mates like Laswell, Roots Control, Scarab and Spectre as well as new flight crew members such as The Bug, Twilight Circus, Layng Martine and others...
[12] "Me Shape" by Freeform on Sprawl www.dfuse.com/sprawl/ is a composition that utilizes the soundings gathered with a tape recorder from the urban intrusive ambience + rhythms of less-ambient noises. This is the strategy of revenge that turns the virus of everyday noise back upon itself. And proves that something beautiful can be made of the ever invasive nature of unrequested ambience.
[13] "Ruigoord Ongehavend" on XAMPL Records Prinsengracht 300, 1016 HW Amsterdam is artistic polemic which presents the plight of this autonomous community on the western edge of Amsterdam.
