Jessie Allen of the Brennan Center for Justice
Friday, August 27th, 2004, 9am - Noon
on
Give The Drummer Some with Doug Schulkind
Florida is one of just a handful of states that permanently
disenfranchises anyone convicted of felony. Some say this law -- enacted during reconstuction when freed slaves first got the right to vote -- disproportionally affects the African American community, and could help determine the outcome of the coming presidential election. For an in-depth discussion of Florida's problematic law and its looming implications, tune in to "Give the Drummer Some," this Friday for an interview with voting rights expert Jessie Allen. She is associate counsel for the Brennan Center for Justice, and is the lead attorney in Johnson v. Bush, a
major Federal voting and civil rights suit challenging Florida's permanent voting ban for felons. The discussion will begin at 11:30am.

Think "Upside Down" era Jesus and Mary Chain; "Drive Blind" era Ride, pre-"Loveless" My Bloody Valentine, The Aisler's Set set at their loudest, and Swervedriver at their poppiest.

The Old Codger fills in for Laura's Radio Thrift Shop
Saturday, August 21st, 2004, Noon - 3pm
on
Old Codger with Courtney T. Edison
You've seen his sordid legacy depicted on our home page for years. Courtney T. Edison, a.k.a. The Old Codger, returns to the WFMU airwaves for the first time since 2000, filling in for Laura Cantrell on the Radio Thrift Shop. Many think he's fictitious, nothing more than a Drew Friedman caricature. But the Codger is real. Disbelieve your own ears. He plays 78 rpm records "like they're goin' out of style," and he's "got shoes older than you." Heavy rotation for Louis Jordan, Ukulele Ike and Sophie Tucker -- and no Big Bands! Forget NEW AGE music -- the Codger plays OLD AGE music. Live with it, because as the Codge proclaims, if you can't take it with you, HE'S NOT GOING!

Aki Onda Sunday, August 15th, 2004, 10pm - Midnight
on
A440 / Stochastic Hit Parade with Bethany Ryker
Before the CD, cassettes reigned supreme. You remember the way they grew to fame, as people popped them into car stereos and ambled about listening to Walkmans. The mix tape was born. But donıt think the cassette is a mere casualty of the 80s. Aki Onda doesnıt. Heıs never without a hand-held recorder, picking up odd noise, fragments of conversation and distant murmurs. Then he lets loose. Dust off your tape deck for this one.

Sunday, August 15th, 2004, 7pm - 10pm
on
Transpacific Sound Paradise with Rob Weisberg
Greek music that you probably won't be hearing
at the Olympics. And certainly won't be hearing on Olympic TV coverage. Guest-DJ George Sempepos of the visionary late 80s Greek roots-rock-dance
band Annabouboula smashes stereotypes and busts those ancient Greek
restaurant music myths by unearthing Greek music, new and old, that digs
the roots in interesting and innovative ways. And, did you know that
there are Greek versions of Bollywood songs? George knows...

The Cheater Slicks Saturday, July 31st, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
What do Mudhoney, the New Bomb Turks, and the Dirtbombs have in common? They've all covered songs by the Cheater Slicks!
This 3-piece rawk band started out in Boston in 1988, blending equal parts rock, blues, punk, and psychedelia but always keeping a raw edge. They've
influenced many of the newer bands on the scene, arguably including the
entire roster of In The Red Records. Hear them live on the Cherry Blossom
Clinic, and see them live at the Hook on Thursday July 29 with Mr. Airplane Man and Friday July 30 at the Ding Dong Lounge.
The Starlite Desperation Saturday, July 24th, 2004, 8pm - 11pm
on
Mike L.'s show
From Los Angeles via Detroit comes the Starlite Desperation with their mind-shattering take on the sleazy side of circumstance. A handful of singles, two brilliant albums, and the brand new "Violate a Sundae" EP have all demonstrated that the Starlite Desperation are heirs-apparent to the hastily-vacated throne of The Gun Club. Moreover, they often sound like Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Ramble Tamble" with an even heavier blast of intense, punk dimentia. Hot damn!
Ultimate Punk Rock Radio Fest with The Kids, The Clorox Girls, and Taxi
Saturday, July 24th, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
Terre T brings you THREE preeminent punk rock bands from all over the world live on the air: The Kids (from
Belgium), the Clorox Girls (from San Francisco) and Taxi (from Italy.) This will be the first ever stateside appearance of original '77 punk rockers The Kids, who've been cemented as punk legends thanks to recent re-issues of their first 2 LPs, plus tracks on the
Killed By Death and Bloodstains compilations.
Songs like "This is Rock n Roll," "Rock Over Belgium," "No Monarchy," and "Fascist Cops" are punk anthems up there with "I'm Stranded," "New Rose," and "Chinese Rocks."
San Francisco's Clorox Girls have caught the attention
of notables such as Thurston Moore and Byron Coley, who said "their eponymous Kurt Bloch-produced debut LP is clean and
classic, just like an early 80's SoCal punk band doing Ramones-based tunes... has a basic goodness that is harder to ignore than a trouser-full of antlers"
Italy's Taxi play tough, '70s punk rock in the vein of The Dead Boys or The Heartbreakers. Their debut album is out in the U.S. on Dead Beat Records.
The Weirdos Thursday, July 22nd, 2004, 11pm - 2am
on
Pat Duncan's show
The Weirdos started in the first wave of LA punk in
1977 and their op-art fashion and wild
cut 'n' paste punk art fliers made them an instrumental element of
the burgeoning scene. Playing alongside
legendary and seminal acts like X, The Germs, Screamers, Zeros, and The
Go-Gos but never really breaking on a national level
when "new wave" took over, the Weirdos found their place in history as a notoriously superior live band, flooring audiences with punk classics such as "We Got the
Neutron Bomb" and "Solitary Confinement." The band has recently re-united to help
promote the new compilation "Weird World Vol. 2: We Got the Neutron Bomb."

Mob Stereo
Saturday, July 3rd, 2004, 3pm - 6pm

The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
These guys originally hail from California but are currently living in Brooklyn, NY. This must account for their sunny & sweet yet
dark & dirty Blondie thru a buzzssaw sound! Mob Stereo brings it with lilting girl vocals and really rough rock guitars. Think the Supremes meets Drunks with Guns, or Shop Assistants meets Live Skull. You get the picture! They have a 7" out on dollarrecord.com, with a new album coming out soon.
