This week on the Scones Radio podcast with Brad and Momo: A young prospect in the grime/dubstep scene, Numan has put out a number of colorful bass productions for the likes of Planet Mu, Slit Jockey and Wickey Lindows. The 18-year-old hailing from Manchester first caught Scones Radio's attention with his incredibly catchy remix of Major Lazer's "Hold the Line," reminiscent of a starry-eyed Zomby. Equal parts ebullient and rudeboy, this lad's choons got pluck. For this edition of Scones Radio, Numan sent us an exclusive mix of brutish, bass-heavy club tunes spanning genre and geography. Pow!

Brian Shimkovitz curates the outstanding blog Awesome Tapes From Africa, on which he shares the music Africans might pick up at the local cassette kiosk. The sounds are more often than not nothing at all like the smooth World Music productions sold to mellow out frazzled sophisticates in the Western capitals. Instead, we hear the wild, raw, low-fi, raucous rhythms and harmonies of a far more real Africa. Brian will bring a selection of his favorite tapes and guest DJ with Dan, as well as talk about the record label on which he is beginning to reissue some of the best of his tapes.

Drawing from that fine tradition of country folk singers, Melaena Cadiz has been making a name for herself both as a solo artist and as a backing vocalist. Her pastoral music is filled with her unusually arresting voice, a standout especially when she performs live. Melaena has been compared to the likes of June Carter Cash and Patsy Cline with a touch of Joanna Newsome's unusual style. Cadiz also haunting role in Matt Bauer's video "Blacklight Horses." Melaena Cadiz is in town with her band and plays live on WFMU.

Another action-packed evening of wall-to-wall live music from Barbes, the intimate music-lover's haven at 376 9th St (corner of 6th Ave) in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Featuring the splendid chanteuse Sanda Weigl accompanied by keyboardist extraordinaire Shoko Nagai; Alexandros Papadakis, a master of the spellbinding lyra (fiddle) and other traditional instruments from Crete; sonic globetrotters TriBeCaStan and their array of exotic instruments from everywhere; and the incomparable Balkan brass bashers Raya Brass Band.

As usual the tireless Irene Trudel will be both technical guru and co-host with Rob. Admission is free during the broadcast (although performers may pass the hat for voluntary donations) and we'll be doling out free FMU swag.

The Cherry Blossom Clinic is excited to welcome The Happy Refugees to the WFMU airwaves on December 10th! This British band created a brand of highly charged cult post-punk akin to early Mekons, Toy Love, Swell Maps and the Nightingales back in the '80s. But now they've reunited for the first time in nearly 30 years to set the record straight. Their classic record "Last Chance Saloon" (Acute) is being reissued and they're playing their first US shows ever Fri Dec 9 at the Knitting Factory Brooklyn w/ Crystal Stilts, and Dec 10 Sat at Cake Shop w/ Regal Degal.

Shelley Hirsch has been a fixture of the Downtown Music scene for decades. A talented composer, improviser and vocalist, her work willfully blurs lines between singing, acting and storytelling. A performance by Hirsch could be many different things - it's often a spontaneous burst of imagery, reacting to her surroundings, lapsing into dreamlike imagery and nostalgic songs. But it's never predictable. As such we don't know quite what she'll do when she drops by the Minotaur's cave, we only know that she'll be here.

Mueran Humanos (translated: Death To Humanity) are the duo of Carmen Burguess and Tomas Nochteff, two Argentine transplants to Berlin. Together, they've incorporated visual art and industrial synthscapes while utilizing some driving, processed bass guitar in the proceedings; they've been called a garage-rock version of Chris and Cosey. Dark elements of Suicide, DAF, Soft Cell abound amidst Spanish lyrics, they're less dancefloor and more expansive electro-psychedelia, and have a recent release on Sean from Cult of Youth's excellent Blind Prophet label. They stop by to perform on Brian's show today on their 2nd US tour.

Join DJ Rupture for a special live broadcast on Monday December 5th at Spectacle Theater in Brooklyn. The radio show will be built from a YouTube selection of some of Rupture’s favorite Moroccan tracks from the 70s to present, and will be followed by a screening of Ahmed El Maanouni’s gripping and poetic Nass El Ghiwane documentary film, TRANSES (1981). Nass El Ghiwane, a group of working class musicians from Casablanca, revolutionized Maghrebi song in the 1970s and remain Morocco’s most important band. TRANSES captures them at the height of their power. Doors at 7:30pm, $5 admission goes to Spectacle and includes homemade mint tea and dates.

The result is a band with a variety of sounds and influences, from country to punk, churning out a garage-y sound that's hot.

Sol Okarina

Colombian-based singer and songwriter Sol Okarina was born in Guayana, Venezuela, where the Orinoco and Caroni rivers converge - a spectacular setting that left an indelible mark on her music and lyrics. She also continues to play her childhood instrument, the Venezuelan cuatro, a diminutive member of the guitar family. Sol Okarina blends those deep-rooted elements into her engaging modern mix of indie rock, cumbia, Caribbean and South American sounds and African-influenced champeta on her impressive debut album Sumergible - and with her band live in WFMU's Studio B this week.

After a long hiatus, the (mostly) original line-up of Boston legends Barrence Whitfield & The Savages are back on WFMU this Sat, Dec 3rd. Their wild, searing 2011 LP, "Savage Kings" (Munster/ Shake it) with Barrence’s amazing r'n'b shouter vocals calls to mind Little Richard or Esquerita live in their prime! Plus Peter Greenberg (DMZ) is back on searing guitar! Also Barrence & the Savages are playing the early show (7pm doors) at Maxwell’s later that evening! And if that weren’t enough later in the show we’ll have a live performance from Cruddy -- Punk ROCK from Austin, TX (featuring current, former members Total Abuse & Best Fwends.) Cruddy’s debut album "Negative World" (12XU) is total hardcore punk dynamics compressed into brutally efficient short, shock songs akin to early Black Flag, Necros & the Urinals. They’re currently on tour & will be playing Sat Dec 3 in NYC at The Cake Shop.

Fulminate have been playing a form of Jazz, experimental free music, and a bit of rock around the New York area for a number of years now. They released their self titled album a few years ago and have been consistently delivering their unique blend of sonic experiments with full throttle gusto. Since carrying an orchestra with them is a bit out of the price range these days, Misty Roses often strips things down to an electronic version. Yoshihide has explored noise, ambient and electronic sound art, jazz and Japanese folk music through a succession of groundbreaking bands and improv meetings, playing guitars (sometimes reconstructed) and turntables (with and without records) and at one time even a turntable mounted in a guitar. Tune in for a solo guitar performance by Yoshihide followed by a conversation with these two absolute masters of sound art.

Two sound pioneers perform separately on Brian's show today, first: Portland, Oregon-based Daniel Menche has been an architect of an amazing variety of experimentation since 1989. Using basic collected sounds from completely open sources, his manipulations and layerings focus in identifying core elements in each sound utilized, showcasing its found energy upfront and transforming the sounds in a way much more imaginatively and mapped out than your average noise artist. Menche's wonderful blog also documents his running of one of the most organized, picturesque elementary school libraries in the world, as well as the day to day exploits of his kickass dog, Arrow. Up next: Scott Konzelmann's discography as Chop Shop reflects similar organic source sensibilities that traverse boundaries and definitions, though this Brooklyn-based artist also focuses on the sounds of physical decay via specialized constructions that include speakers and hybrid objects of his own creation; all emphasizing the physicality of sound again without falling into the trappings of any designated 'noise' scene. A very rare live radio appearance today on Brian's show!

Paradoxically, the duo uses modern digital technology to bring the lush classicism of two centuries ago back to life by layering Goese's evocative vocals together with the heady ambiances of Neill's self-designed mutantrumpet and cello accompaniment. Their goal is to help change that – by featuring musicians and music from cultures across Anatolia – Turkish, Kurdish, Azerbaijani, Roma and more. He takes some cues from classic Detroit acts, but the productions have a rough, personal feel that firmly aligns Martin-McCormick with not only 100% Silk's current crop of basement producers, but truly distinctive weirdos like Omar-S and Hieroglyphic Being.

Part 2 of our special tribute to the recently deceased Conrad Schnitzler will air on October 27, with guest and long time friend of Schnitzler's Gen-Ken Montgomery. This program will feature Con himself speaking in excerpts from interviews and CONversations, a premiere broadcast of his only recording made specifically for a 7-inch record, another mix of a CONcert performed live by Gen-Ken, and a very special CONversation with Wolfgang Seidel who was a long time collaborator with Schnitzler going back to the earliest incarnations of Kluster, Eruption and other projects. Schnitzler was a key figure in the development of psychedelic rock, electronic and experimental music in Germany beginning in the late sixties. His influence cannot be overstated, and can be heard everywhere right up to today's electronic music. Rare and seldom heard works will be aired as well as discussion about the man himself.
