Optiganally Yours Wednesday, October 22nd, 2003, Noon - 3pm
on
Irwin Chusid
Optiganally Yours performs on Irwin's program, Weds. Oct. 22 from noon to 2 PM. This duo showcases the unique sounds of the Optigan, a long-obsolete parlor organ made by Mattel in the early 1970s. It generated sounds from
celluloid discs encoded with a variety of real-instrument locked-grooves, covering an amazing array of musical styles. It sounded like crap, but in a GOOD way! Pea Hicks is the resident Optiganist, accompanying the vocal and
guitar stylings of Rob Crow. Due to the size, weight, and unreliable nature of the Optigan, Hicks will be using a laptop-based simulation (or Laptoptigan) for this performance, but over the radio you can't tell the diff. Also, Pea and Rob will guest DJ for part of the program, spinning some of their favorite artists.

Friday's "And did we Mention our Disco?" will be stopping by WFMU as part of his New York City Fall 2003 invasion, and bringing along a crate full of obscure, new, and old New Wave/PostPunk/party jams designed to get the listener both perplexed and grooving even if accompanied only by his/her kitchen or bedroom furniture.

a very special performance. Hear it Monday 10/13 noon-3pm.
Science Guise, aka MC Paul Barman
Monday, October 13th, 2003, 9am - Noon
on
Busy Doing Nothing with Charlie
"No one left for the restrooms when I got onstage/I can rock the mic to 'Silence' by John Cage." He's a wordy, hyperintellectual motormouth with more references than Google. He used to rap hilariously clever smut ("My
dandy voice makes the most anti-choice granny's panties moist"); now he rhymes about even dirtier subjects -- like abuse of power on corporate and government levels, and ritual genital mutilation (you know, like, circumcision). Never circumscribed, the rapper who's educated, not adjudicated, will stop by to chat and show off some new rhymes, around 11 am.

on
Pseu Braun
Pseu welcomes very special guest Terry Manning, who is a legendary figure in music production and engineering, getting his start at Stax records and Ardent studios in the 60's. His name is stamped on a long roster of records from Led Zeppelin, Al Green, The Staple Singers, Alex Chilton, ZZ Top, and Shakira. Although he has repeatedly denied requests for interviews, he has agreed to come on WFMU to discuss his new project, Lucky Seven Records, a label that is releasing lost recordings of Stax/Ardent white rock groups from the early 1970's, including previously unheard material from Chris Bell. Terry will be joined by Max Wisley from the group Cargoe, one of the artists on the Lucky Seven roster.

Williamson, and Bobby Blues Bland. He gave harp lessons to a young John Lennon and has had a remarkably successful and Grammy award winning solo career.
Look out, it's "Gay Bar" Remix Mania
Friday, October 3rd, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
Way back in May, we stumbled upon the solo vocal track for the runaway UK hit by the Electric 6 "Gay Bar", and a dream was born. The dream was called "The Great Gay Bar Magnum Dopus", and we envisioned DJs around the
world (and WFMU) doing their own, specially commissioned, remix of just one song -- this song. "Gay Bar"
Way back in May, we thought this was a great idea.
On October 3rd at 5pm, we make good on our promise - a full hour of "Gay Bar" remixes.
Nathaniel Mayer
Thursday, October 2nd, 2003, 8pm - 11pm
on
Music To Spazz By with Dave the Spazz
Join Dave the Spazz as he welcomes the legendary Mayor of the Motor City, Fortune Records recording artist Nathaniel Mayer. Back in the sixties, Nay Dog waxed some of the wildest sides this side of Planet Earth. Now after a 40 year

The Daniel Johnston Hour on WFMU (recast)
Thursday, October 2nd, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
(Since so many listeners missed this one due to the big Northeast blackout, we're going to reair this Aircheck from August 14th):
Thanks to Nick Hill, host of WFMU's Live Music Faucet (which went off the schedule in the mid 1990's), listeners will get a chance to hear a legendary hour of radio often asked about here. This particular program came from Nick's 2nd Anniversary Show in February of 1990, and featured Daniel Johnston via telephone from his home in West Virginia and a whole elaborate cast of characters played by Daniel himself. He's joined for three songs played along in the studio by Yo La Tengo, then the trio of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and Dave Schramm.

on
The Audio Kitchen with The Professor

reap the results. On the menu so far: Wayne, the desperate whispering teenager-- Cheryl Hough, the self-hypnotized Amway lady-- and the zonked out warblings of Ziggy Bathtub. There may still be time for you to get in your request too-- Just email prof@wfmu.org.
The Ex Tuesday, September 30th, 2003, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner
Since 1979, Holland's greatest musical export has been setting the bar higher and higher. Starting off as political punks active in their country's squat movement, the band has grown into an incredible example of living its message via passionate and prolific output both musical and print-related. Through the years, their world travels have allowed them to
grow and absorb many genres of music into their sound, from European folk, to improvisational jazz and African pop; most recently they've been frequent visitors to Ethiopia and have championed largely-unheard and wonderful music from all over the African continent. Live, the current lineup of Terrie, Andy, G.W. Sok, RozeMarie, and Katherina are a
veritable tornado of pounding rhythms and dissonant twin guitars, tearing up the stage more each time they return to New York. They've kindly invited Brian to broadcast their 75 minute Knitting Factory show from September 9th.
This Moment in Black History
Saturday, September 27th, 2003, 5pm - 7pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
This combo from Cleveland brings equal parts of rock-n-roll and art noise, calling to mind bands like the Piranhas or the Lynnfield Pioneers; think Subway Sect meets DNA, if that
helps! And you gotta love a band that has a song called "Lipps Inc"! Featuring ex-members of the Bassholes, Chargers Street Gang and Neon King Kong. Check them out live on the show and also new 7" coming on Version City this
week.
Matmos
Friday, September 26th, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
The San Francisco-based duo of MC Schmidt and Drew Daniel have created some of contemporary electronic music's most innovative records. Drawing on classic ideas of music concrete, composition and sampling, as well as out-of-left-field concepts such as building rhythmic collages out of the sounds of plastic surgery, latex clothing, rat cages and more, Matmos produce sounds of the unexpected (even promising an accompanying tap dancer today!). They've just arrived back in the states fresh from a world tour as the backing ensemble for Bjork in time to release their own new disc on Matador, "The Civil War." Tune in for a rare sound experience.
WFMU ID Mania!!!!
Thursday, September 25th, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
In case you weren't sure, our station ID is WFMU East Orange, WXHD Mount Hope, wfmu.org. Tonight's Aircheck will serve as a suitable reminder of that as we hear WFMU ID's past and present, edited together and preserved in a flowing, audio river that hopefully will not make anyone crash their car on tonight's commute home.
The Gathering Family
Wednesday, September 24th, 2003, 7pm - 8pm
on
The Audio Kitchen with The Professor
Besides being nearly hairless omnivores, human beings are also pack animals. We like to gather with our own kind during holidays, celebrations, and during the warmer months. There's something special about getting together with people who look, smell, and sound like you do, and this week the Audio Kitchen features some captured sounds from these
familial events. Join the Professor for an hour of reunions,
sing-a-longs, anniversaries, & arguments with Mom, Dad, and all the kids!

on

Sound!
Special Guest DJ: Jamison Duffield (of Toulouse/Jet Sound/Pengo)
Saturday, September 20th, 2003, 2am - 6am
on
Janitor From Mars with R. Lim
Ten years ago, Jamison Duffield formed Toulouse to express his take on the poppy post-punk sounds which have recently come back into vogue. At the same time, he was presenting the best of his contemporaries and inspirations on Jet Sound, a weekly radio program at WHPK in Chicago. Please join me in welcoming him back to the airwaves, as he stops by the
WFMU studios with some records and unreleased Toulouse recordings. As a special bonus, we will be joined by his former radio co-host and bandmate: the enigmatic Zippopolous G Ungermoose.
Sex Pistols on KSAN / GG is Dead / Paul Is Dead / Rosco Resigns from WOR
Thursday, September 18th, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
Aircheck starts to near its season finale so we're going to pile on some surreal moments both previously heard and unheard on the show tonight. Up first: The Sex Pistols, on eve of their 1978 self-destruction in San Francisco, take to the airwaves of KSAN and go head to head with callers. Then, a previously-aired-here snapshot of the Sheik on WKDU in Philadelphia having a rather emotional (try INSANE) elegy to punk icon GG Allin who died the previous evening. Next, a reprise of the famous "Paul McCartney Is Dead" speculation on air at WABC with Roby Yonge in October, 1969, up to and including the point he's taken off the air. And, on a similar note, the legendary Rosco (aka Bill Mercer) unceremoniously departs his microphone on WOR, lamenting the end of the age of the spontaneous, personality driven radio that was happening around him.
Sunroof! plus The Vibracathedral Orchestra
Tuesday, September 16th, 2003, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner
A joyful noise live in the studio today with the United Kingdom's finest purveyors of psychedelic noise. Matthew Bower has been part of such great institutions as Skullflower, Total, Ax, Ascension and others, and in his latest project Sunroof! he explores a dreamier (yet still brain-frying) mode of drone bliss. As if that weren't enough, we also get a rare stateside visit as Leeds-based Vibracathedral Orchestra, another continually-productive and amazing troupe of sonic explorers. A past avalanche of recordings (many self-released) have revealed the VCO to be among the northern hemisphere's true torch-bearers of the free-rock aesthetic that say, the Dead C have held the fort down on in New Zealand. Drones, bells, acoustic instruments, cheap casio, reeds, drum circles, and sounds totally alien and unidentified have all found their way into their records. Live in the WFMU studios today, with Sunroof! in tow, no one can tell what exactly is going to happen, or who will be involved. But it will be a definite headphone experience.
The Bellrays Tuesday, September 16th, 2003, 9am - Noon
on
Mike L.'s show
Unless you want it blown through the wall directly in front of your speakers, you'd better nail it down before this paint-peeling left-coast combo makes its second visit to WFMU. In these tiring times of shaggy-haired false rockers with image on their minds and pablum on their plates, it's downright life-affirming to watch the Bellrays slay all the competition before it even gets out of the starting gate. Vocalist Lisa Kekaula's stage presence is more effectively likened to a caged animal than any mere singer, and the band that makes it all happen shoots to kill and obliterates the mark every time. Don't miss this.
Author Jeff Tamarkin Saturday, September 13th, 2003, 7pm - 9pm
on
Bob Brainen's show
The whole show will be dedicated to the music of Jefferson Airplane, w/ special guest Jeff Tamarkin, who just wrote a great bio of the band, called "Got a Revolution!" We'll be talking about the Airplane and their times, and playing lots of music, including many rarities.
Runner & the Thermodynamics Saturday, September 13th, 2003, 5pm - 7pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
This Boston trio brings together all the best elements of 70s power-pop and rock calling to mind the Pezband, the Records, Thin Lizzy, and Todd Rundgren. They sound great but really have to be seen as well, so check them out during their residency at Pianos on Sept 17, Sept 25, and Oct 1.
Xper.Xr
Friday, September 12th, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
Known for travelling the same sound-manipulator performing circuits as the likes of Stock, Hausen, & Walkman, V/VM, People Like Us, etc., tonight's WFMU special is a little, well, unusual. In their own words: "In a totally confused and mixed up sonic world, five gifted London based Broadcasters
comes to terms with their own spirituality and philosophical discourse, attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the roots of evil in order to develop practical everyday solutions for all mankind. It may not make sense in the beginning but it will all come together so beautifully in the end."
Radio Melange, Tapes provided by Chris T.
Thursday, September 11th, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
Let's GO-GO with the lost WABC tapes! In the late 80's, Chris T. was working at a company owned by a former WABC-AM engineer and pulled several unmarked reels of quarter-inch tape out of the garbage. On those tapes were board (NOT over-the-air) recordings of circa 1967 Go-Go-era WABC
content, including jingles, news, classic Stan Freberg, local
battle-of-the-bands contest, and more. As Joe Buck said in Midnight Cowboy , motoring within range of Manhattan
on a Greyhound bus and listening to WABC-AM on a transistor radio: "You hear that ma'am?! That's NEW YORK!!!" Now the quintessential New York radio station comes crackling out of your speaker in glorious MONORUAL HI-FI sound!
Pamela Z
Wednesday, September 10th, 2003, 3pm - 6pm
on
Kenny G's Hour of Pain
Kenny G welcomes Pamela Z, who will be creating a live,
in-studio piece here at WFMU. Pamela Z is a San Francisco-based composer/performer and audio artist who works primarily with voice, live electronic processing, and sampling technology and is best known to WFMU listeners as the composers of the techno-nerd WFMU classic "Geek Speak."
Flaming Fire
Monday, September 8th, 2003, 8pm - 11pm
on
Scott Williams's show
Flaming Fire are Brooklyn's own purveyors of electric brimstone revivalism! If the Good Lord's gotta secret backroom speakeasy, Flaming Fire's the houseband! Flaming Fire is all about the noisy pagan folk-goth - sorta like a young urban person's guide to Current 93, Jackie-O M-F-er, and Throbbing Gristle. This show will be 100% LIVE!
Oh Susanna
Monday, September 8th, 2003, 3pm - 6pm
on
Trash, Twang and Thunder with Meredith Ochs
Suzy Ungerleider, the Canadian singer/songwriter who performs under the name Oh Susanna, stops by Trash, Twang and Thunder for a live performance and chat about her third, self-titled record and gig that night at Joe's Pub. Ungerleider won critical praise for her 1998 album Johnstown, which chronicled a 19th century flood that wiped out a town of the same name.
Consonant
Saturday, September 6th, 2003, 5pm - 7pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
This 4-piece from Boston makes great new music that is
refined, thoughtful, well-crafted, and evocative. The band includes Clint Conley from Mission of Burma along with Chris Brokaw (Come, Pullman, Evan Dando), Matt Kadane (Bedhead, The New Year), and Winston Braman (Fuzzy).
Their second album, "Love and Affliction", came out in August on Fenway Recordings. Hear them live on the Cherry Blossom Clinic, then go see them live at Northsix the very same night!
Atom Heart, a.k.a. Senor Coconut
Friday, September 5th, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
Now having relocated from Germany to Chile, Atom Heart is a man of many disguises: LB, Datacide, Geeez N' Gosh, Los Samplers, The Disk Orchestra, and most recently Senor Coconut, whose output seems informed by a most appealing combination of Perez Prado and Kraftwerk. Atom's love for
electronic music traverses lines from the abstract to lounge, and today's Re:Mixology show features a special-for-WFMU nonstop blend of his roots and faves, from Martin Denny to Haruomo Hosono and Hajime Tachibana all melded into a fuzzy bubblebath of sound to accompany the first Friday
afternoon post-work cocktail.
Zappa visits Freeform KSAN
Thursday, September 4th, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
In 1968, Frank Zappa was one freaky Mother, and San Francisco station KSAN
was pioneering some serious freeform radio. Tonight, Aircheck presents a
full hour of their meeting, as Zappa sits in with the Freeform granddaddy
of us all, KSAN Poobah Tom Donahue. Dynamic to say the least, their
conversation gets wily & contentious at times, and always iconoclastic. Listen as Zappa spins Ewan MacColl sea chanteys and greasy doo wop faves,
and Donahue continually corrects him on his knowledge. A relic from the
days when the DJ was every bit as lofty and mythic as the Rock Star,
tonight's Aircheck is a rare Clash of the Titans.
Guest DJ Evan "Funk" Davies
Saturday, August 30th, 2003, 5pm - 7pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
In the early 80s, WNYU's "New Afternoon Show" was one of the very few radio shows playing the crazy punk & new wave records. As goes the old saying regarding the Velvet Underground -- that only a few people bought their albums, but everyone who did started a band -- everyone who heard the New Afternoon Show got involved in the burgeoning punk scene by forming bands, starting labels, putting on shows, or becoming DJs themselves. Evan "Funk" Davies was the best of the "New Afternoon Show" DJs, and he'll be on the CBC spinning hits and obscurities alike. Plus you'll hear original "New Afternoon Show" airchecks from 1981! This is gonna be a BLAST!!!
Seymour Stein
Friday, August 29th, 2003, Noon - 3pm
on
Monica's show
Tune in next Friday, August 29, from noon - 3 PM for Monica and Mr. C's in-depth interview with record industry legend and musical forerunner Seymour Stein, founder and president of Sire Records. This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from the man who brought us the Ramones, Madonna, Talking Heads, the Deviants, the Pretenders, Ice-T, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Depeche Mode, the Cure, Pink Fairies, Echo & the Bunnymen and MANY more. One of the most astute, entertaining and musically knowledgable men in the biz, Stein started as a chart editor at Billboard in the 50s, went on to an early 60s apprenticeship under King Records mogul Syd Nathan and then did time in the Brill Building under the auspices of George Goldner's Red Bird label, finally forming the musically innovative and wildly successful Sire Records in 1966. Seymour Stein witnessed history and made it, be sure to tune in!
The Chief Rocker: Frankie Crocker
Thursday, August 28th, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
Monica presents a full hour of the late NYC radio legend Frankie
Crocker, one of the flashiest and most flamboyant radio personalities
ever. This September 1969 aircheck from Top 40 powerhouse WMCA, where
Frankie held down the 7-11pm slot following Murray the K, is a great
example of both the early Frankie Crocker persona and the glory days of
Top 40 in NYC. You'll hear lots of Frankie's classic raps, unbridled
ego, and get a glimpse of what would soon come when, in the early 70s,
he tranformed WBLS into New York's #1 station with his unique blend of
R&B, pop, Latin, disco and jazz. This aircheck was originally recorded
by WMCA listener Rob Frankel.
Baby Zizanie Thursday, August 28th, 2003, Noon - 3pm

Pseu once again will attempt to contact the lovable but sadly departed character actor Willliam Hickey, star of films such as Prizzi's Honor and cast member of the Crystal Bernard television hit "Wings." Hickey will hopefully regale us with
wonderful stories about Hollywood and dish about those recently arrived at the pearly gates.
