Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Ok, long track, I got time to write some things based on browsing bandcamp.

Never Not A Grave Digger. - any clue you can give old clueless guy about that?

Cecilia Lopez -any relation besides last name and sometimes performing together?

Santeria -something you grew up with or encountered as an adult?

Response during the next mic break is good. On not. It's your gig here today.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:09pm

Cecil, cool!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
Jeff Golick:

Always fun to guess the over/under on how many people would leave a Cecil gig in the first half hour.
  4:13pm
northguineahills:

Sent my background check doc to my partner so she can edit it (I don’t have an Adobe license). I may have accidentally got a job, but I’ll find out next week. One more interview to go. Still living at a rest area.

Cecil always clears the cobwebs in my brain.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Jeff Golick:

That said, one's first live Cecil Taylor gig is a uniquely unmooring experience.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
WR:

Monk?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
doctorjazz:

I told this before, but Cecil was the week's pick in the Times at a long gone Village club. The write up talked about how he was not as bombastic as he had been, but was mixing it up with softer dynamics. I got there, a line had formed around the block (as happens with a Times pick). I didn't think I'd get in, but I got on line, which was moving pretty quickly. What happened was Cecil indeed was varying dynamics, loud, soft, but he always played like Cecil... People came, listened, maybe waited a bit for the mellower music, then left. I got nice front row seats for 2 sets.

Sorta similar doctorjazz. Last time I saw Taylor, they wouldn't let me sit at a table since I was a single. Not too long into the 1st set I had a booth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
Gina Bacon:

Digging this Monk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
Dave Sewelson:

sorry to hear the job news, ngh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
fred:

I only saw Cecil once. He was supposed to perform with Amiri Baraka, but they had "creative differences" before the show and ended up performing separately. Memorable show anyway.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
WR:

Somewhat ironically it was a gig where Taylor mostly did poetry and political education rap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Dave Sewelson:

I used to work at a place called Cheese Village, I sold Cecil Taylor a 1/4 pound of Emmenthaler
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Jeff Golick:

Two big cheeses!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm

I since met someone who worked at the venue that night, who told me the argument got so heated they wondered if it came to blows, how would they separate a guy in his late seventies from one in his early eighties without either getting hurt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Gina Bacon:

Good luck, ngh! I hope all goes well for you!

I remember a great Cecil show in the 80s at Carlos I in the village...two sets, five total audience members as I recall, including of course Steve Dalachinsky.
