Just criss-crossed Newtown Creek a couple of times, Frank. Seemed to be holding its own. There was a crew greasing the gears of the bridge, so the dog stopped to be admired for a while. A good day to walk the waters!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm tim from champaign (now washington):

There's a bunch of jabronis I know in Michigan who claim that Kick Out the Jams was MC5's only good album. I'm glad to hear the rest of the world disagrees.
  12:13pm ?:

Ola Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm David (in London):

Tim - I second that opinion around Back in the USA. I think any problem with it is probably production based. I don't think the Five ever really found a producer who understood them properly, though High Time comes close.

VH was after my older brother's time. He had Sabbath, Rick Wakeman, ELP and Jade Warrior albums.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

A lot of older Kinks fans also dismissed everything from Low Budget on. I loved it (especially that album)
Avatar 12:31pm Roberto:

My older brother introduced me to the Kinks.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Here's Eddie himself backing up Joe's point about VH and the Kinks: "These are good songs. Why shouldn't we redo them for the new generation of people?"
  12:32pm sdb:

Van Halen version always struck me as filtered thru Bowie's on PinUps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Phillippe Bastille:

Good afternoon
Avatar 12:33pm spodiodi:

Van Halen replaced The Monkees as my favorite band, all thanks to a girl named Carrie's older brother being into VH (she liked them because he did, and i liked them because she did.) Diver Down and Van Halen (1) were my first purchases. this must have been about 6th grade
Avatar 12:33pm Joe B:

Avatar 12:34pm Joe B:

hey standlund! thanks!
Avatar 12:34pm Joe B:

hey TOPT!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Mike Sin:

Joe B is speaking truth about the Kinks and their popularity arc in the USA -- Their releases on RCA in the mid-'70s got no real respect and went straight to the cut-out bins. When they signed to Arista is hen the game changed because they dismissed a lot of the "concept" work focused on becoming an arena-rock attraction, which required simple broad strokes. Van Halen "embracing" the Kinks only hastened the Kinks new money-making direction.
Avatar 12:34pm Roberto:

Give the People What They Want was huge on L.A. rock radio in '81.
Avatar 12:34pm Joe B:

so as I said earlier how to do a quick cleanup of my apartment before the fire inspector showed up but got caught halfway done, it was a little embarrassing but think I passed. now I just got to worry about the pending State inspector, that's the tough one to appease. Hey Joe, hey Monty listeners.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Was this Buckingham Nicks record before they joined Fleetwood Mac?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm David (in London):

It wasn't just The Kinks either. It's easy to forget just how low the careers of some of the greats dipped at times. I remember seeing Johnny Cash in the early 90s pre-Hurt, pre-revival, and you couldn't give him away at that point. He was doing really bad Country Christmas albums. Amazing show, though.
  12:40pm wendy del formaggio:

Thank you, Joe B! ❤️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Alvy Singer:

The character Flash on the Kinks Preservation albums could be directly correlated to the current President of The USA.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Alvy Singer:

I wonder if Neil was hopped up on honey slides for this Powderfinger take.
Avatar 1:24pm Joe B:

@carmichael - getting the led out at 3 with jim price!
Avatar 1:24pm Joe B:

@alvy - could be - the slower version of sedan delivery was recorded the same day i think
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm DonJuanTijuana:

@JoeB This is why I try to listen every week to your show! Don't Stop!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Alvy Singer:

@Joe-Thanks for that Sedan Deliver factoid.

Thank you Joe, good tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Yes:

joe have you heard greendale live yet?

wonderin how that turned out
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Frank In Queens:

That was a cool version of Powderfinger, but man I really miss the back-up vocals. They kinda make the song for me.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm James in ATL:

Hello Joe! Really enjoying the show today. Love that Sally Crews track.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm JG:

Joe Re: Neil Young, I'm a new subscriber to the Archives. I had availed myself to the free stuff he had up for a while ike the Fireside performances, and went back to look at them and decided the $20 a year was a real bargain. But holy cow, I'm livin on that site now. So much cool stuff. Listening to albums that had got past me, like Sleeps with Angels. Love that video of Prime of Life... so much more
Avatar 1:32pm Joe B:

@yes - i have. on the fence on getting the album. i dug the shows live but not sure if i need to own it
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Frank In Queens:

Great track off the new Matt Berry!
Avatar 1:33pm Joe B:

hey james! me too, so glad to see she's back into doing music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Four Seasons Grain & Seed:

Matt Berry really is a man of many talents. Surprisingly, Tim Heidecker is a talented comedian/musician too.
Avatar 1:34pm Joe B:

@Jg - agreed. the site is a really great immersion. the song folders, just the way it is set up is great. it's weird how stuff comes and goes but it is just really been enjoyable.
Avatar 1:34pm Joe B:

@four seasons - yeah i need to check out his other projects
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Four Seasons Grain & Seed:

If it's Berry you mean, he is quite prolific with comedy shows. I might recommend Snuff Box for his earlier stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Yes:

sweet fuzz
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:37pm JG:

@ Joe, yes I thought some stuff had maybe come and gone in the week I've been a member but I think some stuff that's no longer featured may still be tucked away in there and still available but not as clearly visible. I found the Prime of Life video at first in his movie theater section and when it was gone I poked around and found elswhere. Such a Neil Rabbit hole
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm JG:

@ Joe, watched Rust never sleeps movie, well a little of it. I had forgotten about the Jawa, or Sand People or whatever Star Wars thing was going on there. Pretty funny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Four Seasons Grain & Seed:

This Deathray has a real Dandy Warhols feel.
Avatar 1:44pm Joe B:

@jg - the good thing about the rotating aspect is i watched the heart of gold flm a few weeks back, and if the entire video catalog was available, i might not have ever watched it again. really renewed my appreciation for the prarie wind album

Hi Joe, everyone.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:47pm JG:

@ Joe absolutley, on Prarie wind. Intsead of putting on the album tho, i put on the movie. Its on my dvr. it was on cable and I recorded it Really great performance movie

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Four Seasons Grain & Seed:

Spanakopita? C'mon Joe B. Ain't you ever been to a Greek diner?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Handy Haversack:

Spanakopita = spinach pie!

Whenever a WFMU DJ says "Thibault," all I hear is "TEBOW!!"
Avatar 1:51pm Really Lisa:

Hey, Handy :) Really happy Monday to you. I feel I can type that now w/confidence.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:53pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Man, if I showed up to a Jeopardy tryout the producers would tell me that the Bozo Show is being filmed next door.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Handy Haversack:

Jeopardy prep has become such a *thing*. I wonder if there was a time when people were more like, "Welp, I know a bunch of nonsense. Let's see how I do!"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm JG:

I kinda wish I could be on Jeopardy and kinda don't. I fee like I know a good amount of stuff, but know that my buzzer skills and reaction time would be seriously deficient. Gonna miss Alex, he was a comforting presence
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:03pm suzyhotrod:

Let's accept it. We're all Wheel of Fortune level at best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Four Seasons Grain & Seed:

I will certainly miss Alex's presence on the show. Any idea who they will replace him with, or at all?
  2:04pm Danny in Poughkeepsie:

Hey Joe great show David in London I got see the Johnny Cash show at Point Lookout on Long Island around that time it was truly amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Four Seasons Grain & Seed:

This may sound silly, but John Hodgman seems like a good choice. He's brainy and funny.

Oh. What a day. Stuck in between lesson plans, online conferences and stuff. Finally settling down with 'my' WFMU and a couple of Kingfisher beers. - Wait, it's Stereo Total, adorable! I must have heard that call!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Handy Haversack:

Though Staysh would be the adventure pick for new Jeopardy host!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Frank In Queens:

Ken Jennings has been in the "minor leagues" of game show hosting. He's been a co-host of "Master Minds" on Game Show Network since last year. I think it was on the job training for Jeopardy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Four Seasons Grain & Seed:

Makes sense. I doubt if Hodgman would want it anyway.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Frank In Queens:

I think no matter who it is, it's going to be a "name".

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:11pm JG:

Jennings is a nice guy and smart. But lacks the Trebek charisma. Alex was edgy. Usually gentle and kind but every once in a while if a contestant did something dopey, he'd cal the out on it, usually in a funny but almost mean way. He was great
Avatar 2:11pm Joe B:

jennings has had some title in the jeopardy credits like 'contributing producer' or something since alex got the cancer diagnosis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Four Seasons Grain & Seed:

I didn't think anyone outside of Louisville had even heard of these guys.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Frank In Queens:

Interesting. I didn't know that Joe. I'm usually flipping over to MASH when the Jeopardy credits are rolling.
Avatar 2:12pm Joe B:

  2:21pm David in London:

Danny in Poughkeepsie. Cool, man. Even though he was in the wilderness, he hadn’t changed had he? And only a few years later, people who had no interest in coming with me were saying how much they were kicking themselves for it. Gotta grab the legends when you can.

Handy: don't know if you look at Instagram clips, but apparently someone has trained their dog to fetch wine. The next stage in human-canine symbiosis?
