New York City is sunny and slightly cool. A bit of rain yesterday so the sky is clear. Nice to go out but, you know, work....
Avatar 10:13am

A lot of the Jazarimba Orchestra discs seem to be minstrel songs or similar; I think Sammies may have been a version of a word we would no longer use

StringOFperils:

Hi Jan, Darryl, WR, LD2, U1000, good morning! (I think 'Sammies' may refer to happy Sambo-types, as in the literary creation 'Little Black Sambo'. It's probably in 'Golliwog's Cakewalk' territory. )

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am
Mx. Granny (e/em):

StringOFperils: oh, that is a fascinating tidbit about "sammies", thanks. I didn't know what a "golliwog" was for a long time, and, wow, there are a lot of words that need to be acknowledged as coming from a racist POV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes... this week I found out that 'coon hunting' isn't necesarrily about hunting racoons... :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am
StringOFperils:

Yes Granny, a lot of things are changing, and a lot of them still have to change a lot more. In the UK, the shortened form of golliwog (the last 3 letters) seems to have been pretty commonly used instead of the N word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am
Mx. Granny (e/em):

unfortunately, i found that out from a friend's dad when i was 12. ah! wow, again, StringOFperils, good to know.
