@Handy, Barry Lyndon has a fairly straightforward human plot. I would think it would go down better with someone who doesn't dig long takes without much dialogue or action.

Oh, I don't know. Clockwork Orange can hit the spot for teens.
  11:38am

“2001: A Space Odyssey” from 1968 is still the best science fiction film ever made. That’s an unfortunate fact. And, btw, it’s not a pretentious film - it’s a serious film, a drama, and way ahead if its time. Hell, they have iPads in that film. iPads!

i've personally enjoyed all of the movies mentioned here, and most of them i do not wish to watch again. I'm of the opinion that if you didn't see the movie in a cinema on a huge screen with at least decent sound, you didn't really see it (just like if you saw a picture of the Mona Lisa—even in a beautifully printed coffee table book— you didn't really see the painting) <3

I'm Team 2001/Lebowski but as long as someone says they don't like a movie (as opposed to saying it's bad) then I accept the opinion. Well, except about Lebowski, which if you have a shred of whimsy remaining in your soul you kinda gotta love.

Actually, I had read Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 before seeing the movie. It was written concurrently with the making of the film, and I was struck by the changes Kubrick ended up making. The asteroid belt incident didn't appear in the film, and Kubrick shortened the odyssey to end at Jupiter rather than Saturn.
Originally, in the novel, there's no rescue attempt by Bowman because Poole is crushed to death! Bowman doesn't age rapidly at the odyssey's end as he did in the film--and, when transformed to the Star Child, he returns to Earth and destroys an orbiting warhead!
I also read about a deleted film scene where Floyd visits a lunar pet shop to buy the bush baby his daughter asked for in their videophone call.

Granny ST, if there were more space I have lots of thoughts on the experience of seeing the Mona Lisa in the age of selfies and selfie sticks. It was ... uncomfortable. And not a scene for reflection or contemplation. But the power of the painting is undeniable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am
Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

rw: i skipped it, too. my most powerful moment of viewing a painting was on a trip to Spain when i was 17. When i saw Goya's "Third of May" i burst into tears. And i'm sure i'd seen a picture of it in a book before.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 11:59am

Back in '84 the crowds at the Louvre weren't so dense. But the place is so huge it's intimidating and overwhelming. When I lived in Southern California I had a great time heading to Pasadena's Norton Simon Museum on random weekends just to stroll through all or part of it. A manageable, impressive space, and it features one of my favorite paintings, Raphael's Madonna and Child with Book.

@Hughie Considine
I read Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange" (my library's original American edition without a glossary to help me decipher the fictional slang!) before seeing the movie. I didn't know until years later that the USA version omitted the last chapter that was included in other countries' printings!
I know Kubrick was American, but surely someone in the British cast or crew could've told him about the missing chapter! Maybe they did and Kubrick didn't care.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
Hughie Considine:

Interesting, @David. From what I know about him, Kubrick was extremely thorough. I can't imagine he wasn't aware that there were differences between the two editions, and it seems in character for him to take what he wanted and leave the rest. Stephen King *hated* The Shining, likening it to "a big beautiful Cadillac with no engine inside it."
