Anyone read Kim Stanley Robinson's Antarctica? One of his good ones, I think. He was the guest artist there one year.

Being in lockdown here in Wellington, New Zealand, my memories have occasionally taken me back to 24 years ago when I wintered over at McMurdo Station. That was my first time "living" with my girlfriend (we met the summer before on the Ice, but didn't get together) and we are pretty comfy still in lockdown.

Things are very different now from then of course, but has caused me to stop and remember it. So kind of cool to play around with it in this show. Thanks.

Holy crap, @mcginniwa! That's amazing. Are you a scientist? Mechanic? What brought you down there?

I took a spill into ~40F water this winter, which was enough to turn my brain off for a few moments until I could shock myself back into action.

Went after I finished school. Worked for the company that did the logistic support for the science program down there. Start with the entry level janitor gig for a summer season, then went back for a 13 month contract as fuels operator and then waste management over the winter. My schtick to describe it is, "I was a janitor, gas station attendant, and garbage man in Antarctica." Heh. McMurdo gets compared to mining town... as such has all kinds to things it needs to run.

Very (literally) cool, @mcginniwa. There's a character with basically that job in the KSR book I mention earlier.

I was listening to WFMU in the background while making dinner, then sat down in the livingroom and decided to see what was on the YouTubes while the station was still playing.. across the top of my 'Smart TV' screen were thumbnails for 'recommended' videos, and the third one in the sequence was a 1964 film called "The Last Man On Earth". So now it's time to start looking for the hidden microphones...

mcginniwa:

@Handy yeah, it was a common entry level job at McMurdo when I started. Either janitor, general assistant, or dining assistant.

If you made it through your first season and actually wanted to go back, you knew all the managers and they knew you. So it was easy to get a job that was a big step up the next season. Often people got trained up down there. Had the nickname "antarctic vo-tech" as a result.

That's what happened for my fuelie contract. They sent me for oil spill response training in Galveston, TX before my season as a fuelie.

One of things I did was re-fuel the remote Pegasus airfield with a fuel truck. Here's Scharen the fuel truck I drove (chevron tires were neck high): without.net...

Funnily winter over at McMurdo was actually less isolated in some ways than lockdown. You ate together most meals, etc. 250 people that year.

One freaky event was when the power plant manager turned up mid-winter at breakfast. He hadn't been to a meal since the beginning of the summer season. His job was pretty limited contact with rest of McMurdo workers. No one knew he was on base during the winter. He had made all his meals on a hot plate in his dorm room the whole time. Super funny to see the entire mess hall do a double take.

Ken, at the end of my winter, a cook who had wintered flipped out and took a claw hammer to another cook a few days after I left. Thankfully another cook stopped him pretty quickly. He was in a kind of trance like state.

Glen, the cook that attacked Tony was an alcoholic who had worked Antarctica winter then Alaskan winter, then another Antarctica winter when that happened. He was actually sort of a charming guy (funny loudmouth type that grows on you), but clearly nuts.
