I have been reading Rock Scully and David Daltons book Living With The Dead. A highly entertaining if somewhat fanciful, I suspect account of Rocks time as one of their managers. I am at the part in the time line where Mr. Scully advises Mr. Garcia to make his first solo album easier for programmers to extract a potentially radio friendly song. Jerry to Rock: "Fuck you, Scully. This is my record, I'll do what I want!" Attaboy Jerry, who needs a hit single anyway?

Was too much of a begrudging 13 y.o. punk to care when jerry died. Hated hippies. Preferred hardcore. My older brother had tix to a Boston garden show in October, never happened.

Once I got into sonic youth and local noise shows in college, old freak LPs from the 60s like Nuggets, animal collective, oneida, I started to see the light. I used the Internet archive and local library a lot.

Here's my Dead conversion story. It's somewhat backwards. When I was a teenager, I loved the Dead, as well as other kindsa music. Punk rock and what-not. I went to a bunch of shows when I was 15 or 16 (that woulda been 1989/1990). Mighta been at that Nassau show, in fact. Anyway, when I got to VT (in 1991), the MOST annoying people were so into the Dead that it ruined the music for me. It's only the last few years that I've been able to return to their music, and Jeff's show sure has helped.

In my cohort or whatever you wanna call it (class of '87), anything hippie-ish (or metal) was such a no-no with some punks that becoming a hippie and taking off to follow the Dead for a year became the ultimate rebellion for punks.

It's amazing how common the "hXc to Dead" path is amongst some of us of a certain age. I actively despised the Dead for much of my life, going as far as selling fake hits of acid to Dead Heads on the Mass Turnpike and making a flyer right after Jerry died that said “your god is dead so come check out XhandoverfistX.” Many tried to get me to “get it” but even with all the other weirdo shit I listened to, it didn't take. And lo and behold, via some bluegrass (Peter Rowan) and Garcia noodling on the Zabriskie Point Soundtrack, I fell head over heels on my own.

@Mr. Pumpy: Oh, you mean THOSE trees. Sure, I know where yer at. haha. Anyway, wow, that's surprisingly cheap rent for the area. If you aren't a second homeowner, those ski areas are really hard to afford. I like trampolines, but apple juice is way overrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Mr. Pumpy:

@Uncle Michael. I lived on the west side of the mountain, and there was an old defunct ski lift. I believe it was called the Northwest Passage. Anyhow, I used to snowshoe o the top quite often, and there were all sorts of abandoned shelters and whatnot. Even all the chairs were laid out in an orderly fashion about halfway up the hill. It was a beautiful scene, and no one skied there any longer. Quite serene. this was 2003 though.

When I was in high school, the goths, grunge kids, deadheads, indie rockers, and hip-hop heads all banded together against the jocks (partially united by pot and cheap booze). Strength in numbers.

Not uncommon to rotate De La Soul, Alice In Chains, a Dead boot, Morrissey, Siouxshie Sioux, Teenage Fanclub, Pixies, in a listening session out of somebody's boombox after class.

WFMU is the station I listen to in the background, sometimes. And sometimes, on those occasions, I have to stop what I'm doing to see who the Artist is. The music sounds familiar, have I heard them before, at some bar, in the Village, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Upper East? Maybe not. Anyway, digging the sound.

@t...I had a lot of parties at my house in high school, and the music seen was very eclectic like that. I would sometimes push the envelope and put some real heavy/noise/avant garde shit on, but outside of that...everyone was chill. Even a bunch of jocks! I am happy abut that.
