@Jeff G

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
I bought this album—and maybe another hundred Blue Note LPs—as a cut-out. One or two bucks a piece. Late '70s. Crazy.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:47am dutchtheo:

chresti, its ghost dance, but Prince Buster was a major influence on the twotone ska revival
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

All at the Peaches record store on Rockville Pike out near the Putt-Putt Golf franchise. Rockville, Maryland.

Doug, I like a man that can keep his record buying under control.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:49am dutchtheo:

Sorry Chresti, i thought you wrote ghost town
  10:50am bigplanetnoise:

I sure remember the great, seemingly unending Blue Note cut-out extravaganza of the 70’s. What a time. So many stories. So many records!!!
  10:52am Mr C:

99 cents stores in NY had all Blue Note and Atlantic cutouts.
I had maybe 4$ to spend..
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:52am chresti:

Dutch-I almost did :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

What a time that was. I was buying in bulk. I remember purchasing about 20 Yusef Lateef records (not on Blue Note) in one swoop. All for cheap cheap cheap. This things are the most important thing in the world to me. Crazy.
  10:53am Dean:

Tower Records unloaded a bunch of Riverside and Fantasy LPs for pennies on the dollar in the '80s or '90s. I picked up the Bill Evans and Monk complete Riverside LP boxes, along with an assortment of other artists' vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Yeah, Mr C, it was all the Yusefs on Atlantic.
  10:54am Jeff g. via app:

@Doug: it’s a Newark thing. There are also rooms named for James Moody, WBGO, Gloria Gaynor, and Queen Latifah. Among many others. It’s comforting, honestly.
  10:55am Mr C:

The records I bought back then still mean the most to me..
They're forever imprinted in my head.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:56am chresti:

I remember the cut-outs, big news in Hollywood. I never understood what a cut-out was, although I bought a few..
  10:56am Dean:

That Don Ellis record on Candid was one of the catches from Tower Records.
Avatar 10:56am northguineahills:

@βrian: I'm working at UPS to pay the bills, but I'm so wiped out I can't interview/apply for a jobby-job. (it's hard to compete w/ kids half my age, but I have the best numbers and track record). However, as a side-effect, I'm rather ripped for the first time in my life.
Avatar 🥁 10:59am βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
UPS is hard work. When I worked in the back room at Target I helped the driver load boxes every day. Some of those boxes were huge pieces of furniture. He moved them around like they were nothing.
  11:12am Dean:

When I move -- never again! -- I have to pack up the LPs and CDs. A box of LPs can be very heavy. (Same for a box of books if it's too big.) Last move I hired movers after I'd packed the boxes. They would stack two or three boxes of LPs at a time, then carry them from truck to room.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:13am Brian in UK:

Dean, odd thing is that the Englishman who co-owned it with the woman that now runs it has returned back home and has opened a record shop in the nearest town (Ludlow) to us. He stocks a few Mississippi records. Got an Abner Jay there. Nice fella.
  11:15am Dean:

I remember reading about that, Brian in UK. They were married at one time, I believe. Had a store in downtown Berkeley, but the rents got crazy, so they moved north two towns to El Cerrito. Not far. They're next door to a violin maker, Ifshin.
Avatar 11:17am northguineahills:

@Dean:It's also a SY album.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Back in the '90s, there was a WFMU listener who was a professional art mover. He had a big-ass panel truck and he occasionally donated his services to the station for various projects. When I needed to move out of my five-floor walkup to a new apartment, I hired him to move me. He gave me a great price. On the day of the move, he shows up at my apartment with three or four rag-tag guys who he scooped up off the Bowery. They were all recovering addicts who were in a job-core program that was part of their rehab. Seeing the sight of these poor fellows carrying box after box after box of vinyl down those stairs (and then upstairs to the new apartment) was a horror. And they were getting paid obscenely little. I tipped them all, but the scenes of that move are acid-etched in my soul.

I just cut off a dermal abscess off my toe and lanced a blood blister under my big toe nail (no anesthesia for me, and it's best if I do it myself).
