@slugluv1313: As someone who lost a family member to AIDS, I just need to say as ugly as someone saying it was transmitted via bathrooms go, in 1984 most people had no clue what it was or how it was transmitted. It was simply some magical “gay cancer.” Now if someone was saying that B.S. in 1994 and beyond, they should’ve been smacked upside the head. |

slugluv1313:
oh yes! C. Everett Koop! he was a "hero" to so many of us! sure the ultra-right-wing "pro-lifers" loved him b/c of his anti-abortion stance (&, when i learned more about him, i linka understood why -- among other things, he had worked with ICU neonates) -- then HATED him b/c he was advocating condom use, did not care about anyone's "sexual orientation" etc. -- "they are ALL my constituents!" -- and wanted to protect the public's health (& i still have the newsletter he sent out to EVERYONE way back when) |
![]() |
Sun. 12/1/19 6:19pm
JakeGould:
@slugluv1313: FWIW, the conclusion that AIDS was blood-borne was made between 1983 and 1984: “In the interval between the decisions of early 1983 and discovery of the virus that causes AIDS in early 1984, public health and blood industry officials became more certain that AIDS was a blood-borne disease as the number of reported cases of AIDS among hemophiliacs and transfused patients increased.” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov... I would genuinely give someone the benefit of the doubt if they felt — let’s say — a layer of TP on the toilet seat might help in some way. Seems silly in retrospect, but I wouldn’t just chastise people for thinking that way early in the game; so to say… |
Sun. 12/1/19 6:21pm
greatb:
"they are all my constituents," wow, that is dope!

@ RRN63 -- yes -- and, the "underground" piercing and tattoo communities were using rubber gloves, etc., WAY before anyone else was -- and doing workshops on how to do certain "extreme" practices safely |
![]() |
Sun. 12/1/19 6:29pm
slugluv1313:
@ JakeGould -- i am so sorry that you lost a family member -- i cannot imagine how awful that is, i just hope everyone was/is loving and supportive for you and yes, by 1984, most everyone knew (especially in NYC!) that you could not get AIDS from toilet seats, using someone else's toothbrushes, mosquito bites, etc. -- what was so horrifically ugly and infuriating were the awful rumors people were spreading -- "You know, people are afraid to use the same restroom as 'X' uses," etc. . . . |
![]() |
![]() Sweet show Therese, thanks. Cheers y'all! |
![]() |
Sun. 12/1/19 6:33pm
JakeGould:
@slugluv1313: Ummm… I’m bowing out of your screed but I was a teen and in my 20s when I had to assist in caring for this family member so all I have to say is… Yes! There were badly informed people out there, but I also knew that I personally was terrified because the blood transmission aspect affected my caring for them as well… And don’t worry, don’t keep in touch with tons of people in high school thanks (in part) to their ignorance. Anyway, you are greatly oversimplifying why someone would be cautious back in the early 1980s and ascribing bigotry I cannot agree with to people who were simply uniformed and living in the Reagan era. PS: “…especially in NYC!” There are lots of parts of NYC that are not downtown or the East Village. So please, stop painting attitudes with a wide swath. |

Listener Robert:
Reading upthread, I recall considerable skepticism among scientists even in 1984 over whether there even was a transmissible "AIDS agent". It looked LIKELY that there was, but that conclusion was far from nailed down to the satisfaction of many scientists. I myself wasn't satisfied until the middle 1990s because of 2 lines of evidence: (1) the success of protease inhibitors which were the product of rational drug design against the putative HIV, and (2) the work of Aaron Ho, who was able to correlate so closely viral load of HIV to signs and symptoms of AIDS.
