The parts of Vince's version that sounded less distinctly like Beat Goes On sounded like Mexican/Teaberry Shuffle.

I think we should all submit our versions of the Beat Goes ON
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Franco Twinkie:

The great Ectro-Clash punk band The Screamers did The Beat Goes On, but I don't think they recorded it. To bad, It was beyond belief.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
chresti:

I liked Vince Guaraldi's version
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Funky16Corners:

Sadly Guaraldi's non-Charlie Brown stuff doesn't get played nearly enough
  10:25pm
Dean:

Maybe they didn't record it in studio, Franco, but somebody recorded it a time or two. There are two live versions on In a Better World.

Bunch of Guaraldi here: testifyradio.wordpress.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Bobby & Connie don’t probably exist Erica. Hit records was a label that put out quick budget cover 45s for 5 & dimes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Funky16Corners:

Had a lot of connection problems that night
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, Hit was a rip-off label. Some cool stuff on their records, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
chresti:

I still don't know all the lyrics to Beat goes On
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, it's great that those audience tapes surfaced, but I think they do the band a dis-service. They wouldn't convince anybody how awe inspiring they were. I remember in the summer of 1977 a neighbor played me a cassette tape, but prefaced it with " Trust me. You have to see them."
Avatar 🥁 10:33pm
Erica:

I've heard soundalike records before Matt, but the Bobby and Connie one sounds pretty decent for a rip-off label cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't either chresti! it's okay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Larry I’m already beaten. I think I’ll need to digest this one in smaller segments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
coelacanth∅:

...so far i like some of the instrumental versions the best
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - The quality on those records varies widely, i think depending on the musicians involved and their ambition
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Funky16Corners:

Nite Matt!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - There are some unusual ones coming
  10:38pm
Dean:

That goes for just about everybody, Franco. Some of us, however, especially love hearing the vibrant energy through the shitty medium. Recordings will never faithfully reproduce the events they capture. Disservice? I disagree.

Screamers were notoriously protective of their work, for some dumb reason. They threatened folks (Flipside) who wanted to release records of their performances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

Talk about a strategy that failed!
  10:43pm
Dean:

It worked at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yes, it sure did! They were a true under ground sensation. At the time, they were so far ahead of all the other L.A. bands.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm not familiar with their work at all. I'll have to look them up.
  10:47pm
Dean:

Yes, they were. I was awestruck by that band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

The only other band at the time that was as thrilling were The Cramps.
  10:54pm
Dean:

Start here with TBGO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKXgV655tlc

Not at all, Franco. Weirdos were spectacular, and Germs, of course. Bags. LA was ripe with this stuff. Randoms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

Teenybopper is our newborn king, uh huh
Avatar 🥁 10:55pm
Erica:

On a cold Christmas night too ParUbi.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Funky16Corners:

I always thought 'teenybopper' was a really strange word. Like it fell out of the mouth of some cigar chomping ad man
  10:56pm
Dean:

The Eyes were a short-lived but perfectly unrefined band.

I remember a show with Crime (from SF), Weirdos, and Screamers. Holy crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
chresti:

I heard the king part and was confused
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

listening to that Screamers version, and oh my! the energy! and the buzzy instruments!
  10:58pm
Dean:

And Meltzer was dishing out his offal. Good goddamn times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Franco Twinkie:

I liked the Weirdos, but ultimately they could not hold my interest. Never saw the Randoms. The others? No comment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

the kids don't need no religion
Avatar 🥁 10:59pm
Erica:

My mom still uses 'teenybopper' sometimes. I'm guessing it meant dancing teens or teens dancing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Funky16Corners:

It meant pre-teen/tween pop music fans
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
coelacanth∅:

"teeniebopper" is weird but it makes sense too...and it's not as stupid sounding as "hip hop", after all
Avatar 🥁 11:00pm
Erica:

I was somewhat close. Thanks Larry!
Avatar 11:01pm
Mod Mokka Matti:

Why would one chomp on a cigar? Oh, such tasty tobacco. Blech. BTW, what happened to the whole cigar craze?
Avatar 🥁 11:01pm

It made sense back then but now it sounds old-fashioned and out of place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Funky16Corners:

Avatar 🥁 11:03pm
Erica:

Seriously coel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

i checked the ngram thing, and "teenybopper" peaked in 1970 and then again in 1989
  11:06pm
Dean:

Cigar Aficionado, like Wine Spectator, is still going. I am not a fan of this stuff, rankings, and "reviews' and crap.

ngram is a blast, isn't it? Unreliable, but fun.
Avatar 11:06pm
Mod Mokka Matti:

What is that that Booker was playing? A Clavinet? I really ought to know that, but I don't. Didn't sound like any kind or Rhodes or Wurlitzer, unless my ears are really blocked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
coelacanth∅:

seriously. fucking disgusting. then add the poseur aspect, the fedora and the fat cigar sticking out the middle of the mouth and make it really attractive.
Avatar 🥁 11:07pm
Erica:

Yuck. No wonder the craze didn't last long.
Avatar 11:07pm
Mod Mokka Matti:

Hope you're not anti-fedora
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
coelacanth∅:

teenybopper music is alive and more ubiquitous than ever; it's just not called tennybopper any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
coelacanth∅:

MMM they look terrible on most people, but some can pull it off.
- but the cigar thing goes with various types of floppy-rimmed hats actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Franco Twinkie:

I like Giant Sand. Howe Gelb is a great contrarian. Met him at a Mexican restaurant in Tuscon. He was quite funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

Is this the best or worst line by the way? "Electrically they keep a baseball score"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

I saw Giant Sand up in Eugene. Loved their album, Ramp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
coelacanth∅:

Howie's a good guy and a talented one
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Funky16Corners:

@MMM - Maybe not a proper clavinet but likely some ripoff variant thereof
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Funky16Corners:

@ParUbi - Relevant in an era right after baseball scores were changed by hand
Avatar 🥁 11:15pm
Erica:

That explains the term "electrically" being used.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Funky16Corners:

My brother is a cigar nut. I grew up smelling my Grandpa's cigars, so I dig the smell a little but not the smoke, up close
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

that makes sense! it's all falling into place. You're not supposed to inhale them, right?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Funky16Corners:

Unfortunately cigars have become part of the obnoxious rich-guy/rich-guy-wannabe play acting, territory-marking. Look how may times you see Giuliani with a big, stinky stogie clenched between his yellow teeth. Ugh
  11:18pm
rw:

Evening! This beat just keeps going on and on.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
coelacanth∅:

i like the smell of many cigars, and the smoke doesn't bother me much if it's not in close-quarters. that's not what disgusts me about it.
  11:19pm
Dean:

If I had to choose, I'd go the pipe route. Once upon a time I smoked a Meerschaum. Ultimately, I decided I don't like tobacco.
  11:20pm
rw:

I had to smoke a cigar down so we could use it as a prop for photography. I think I actually turned green.

Larry @11.18 Bingo!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Funky16Corners:

@ParUbi - I'd like to know what the dosage is from an average cigar compared to a cigarette?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

so you're just supposed to hold the smoke, right? not into the lungs?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Funky16Corners:

I think so, but my experience is very limited in that regard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

a full sized cigar apparently has as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Funky16Corners:

Wow!
  11:23pm
Dean:

I suspect one of the reasons I firmly believe that the effect of cannabis is purely placebo is that I don't know how to hold the smoke "into the lungs." But I do believe pot operates primarily as a placebo. So be it!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Funky16Corners:

Bye bye lungs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
coelacanth∅:

just hold the smoke in the mouth, let it permeate to the nasal passages...i guess.
that's pretty much how i smoke a cigarette, on the rare occasion i do that. i don't really inhale it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

yeah if you actually inhaled it, you'd likely puke
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
chresti:

My dad used to chew on cigars
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

did he finish them in one sitting?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - You see that a lot in old movies, guys chewing the hell out of stogies. I don't know how anyone did that.
Avatar 11:26pm
Mod Mokka Matti:

My late maternal grandfather was far from a rich guy, being a cowboy/truck driver/small-scale short-haul truck line owner, and my mother would often bring up that he didn't smoke cigarettes, but did like cigars when he was out on the road in one of his trucks. He lived to be 97 1/2 years old, so there's that... sort of like George Burns.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
chresti:

Life goes on keeping baseball scores
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

and the question is, how long is one cigar supposed to last?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Funky16Corners:

@MMM - My Grandpa wasn't loaded either, but cherished his time with a Garcia y Vega, lounging on the living room couch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm

Dean, I eat pot, and it's real
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:29pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm

I love the story of The Mothers Of Invention opening for Vanilla Fudge in Long Island, their home turf. The audience was chanting "You guys stink! Bring on The Fudge!

@Franco - I can picture an audience of Long Island yobbos screaming at anyone, but especially the Mothers

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
ParUbi of Pittsburgh:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

Interesting compilation, have to catch it in the archive. A competitor to Ken's 3 hour Bohemian a Rhapsody extravaganza (which is up there with my favorite radio EVER).

Wasn't The Fudge drummer supposed to be some hot shit player? According to who!?! They should have played their version in drug prevention programs.

Carmine Appice! I had one of his drum instruction books when I was in high school.
