it amuses me that we loved just taping our own voices, with nothing special to say. i usually sent my tapes out to friends ~ audio letters ~ but not always.
Avatar 2:25pm
Linda Lee:

i started with a reel to reel, age 8 or 9, in the late 60s. just farting around with my own voice. so funny.
Avatar 2:27pm
Otis Fodder:

I would love to hear (and play if you like) any audio you have. Now it's all about YouTube personal videos where we had tape and reel recorders.

I started with a small panasonic in the 70s (kind with the handle that pulls out so you can carry it about.
Avatar 2:29pm

o gosh, i had one of those too! used to play my taped songs from the radio in public like that. pre boom box & definitely before walkman!
Avatar 2:30pm
Otis Fodder:

Total pre-walkman. I remember quite a few kids had those, they must have been pretty cheap or good priced. My got so beat up from carrying it around (and taking it to school in my backpack and remember that was sooo not allowed).
Avatar 2:31pm
Linda Lee:

it was not! no!
i'd be happy to share some tapes with you, if they can be located. i've moved around a bit. :-)

Of course, when I can, being that this travelogue is personal, I asked SOB (Diane) if these tapes can be aired she sent me in 2005. Her words are with permission and I love these tapes.

that's important.

train trip relationships are different than any others.

Linda Lee:

you do get to know people on the long trips, but it's still very casual.

Some great conversations coming up on future shows. Bits spread out. Have 6 in total to play and total recorded time was something like 5 or 6 hours.
Avatar 5:43pm
Linda Lee:

i hear the cultural divide here, but you manage these conversations anyway. that's the great thing about train trips, too. you'll reach across differences.

I really have to bring my zoom recorder next time I take amtrak down to nyc from montreal (planning on next trip, fmu record fair in April, oh yea!)
Avatar 5:45pm
Linda Lee:

oh are you!! exciting!
Avatar 5:45pm

Haven't visited since Feb 2018. Will volunteer at the fair for sure and hopefully get on to do some radio with Irwin again.

i hope you do!

he's right about Joan Armatrading.

Yes, he is. I really like both Joan and Tracy.

Thanks for reminding me about the record fair. Not sure if I'll have travel money or time off, but I'm gonna try to go this year. I take my Tascam field recorder to both NYC and Montreal, but I forget to bring it out with me most of the time.
Avatar 5:48pm
Linda Lee:

my tascam just died on me. just will not power up. i'll need a new recorder. i'll go for the zoom now.

I have been taking another look at train travel recently, for a couple of reasons. It's hard to get the extra time off from a job for that though.
Avatar 5:48pm
Otis Fodder:

Kat, would love to hear some of your field recordings. Do let me know if you go, we'll bring our recorders!

LL - Check out the Zoom H1... lowest priced one and works just perfect.
Avatar 5:50pm
Linda Lee:

thanks for the recommend, i will! i want one before i leave this cabin. the way sound travels in this valley is fairly amazing.
Avatar 5:50pm
Otis Fodder:

Kat, I hear you with the train and time off. I have to plan in advance to pad my trip by 2 days before/after... but when I can it's so worth it. Love the slow train and a window and bringing food on with books and shows on a tablet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
Kat in Chicago:

I don't have a lot of recordings, and none of it's great quality (I need a good windscreen!). I do have some nice cicadas from my neighborhood, and a bit from the Square Saint-Louis this past August.

i love train travel. i did the new york/miami trip often when my mom lived down there.

I need to just move to NYC and take trains to/from Montreal from there :)
Avatar 5:51pm
Linda Lee:

i'd love seeing Montreal! a train trip sounds super!
Avatar 5:51pm
Otis Fodder:

Or move to Montreal for cheaper rent and take trains down to NYC!
Avatar 5:52pm
Otis Fodder:

Long train ride, something like 10-11 hours.
Avatar 5:52pm
Linda Lee:

back in 2010 i used my recorder often, for doing sound work with natural field recordings. 'the red hill project': one or 2 pieces a month, throughout the year. that was fun.

Just don't order a hamburger in the food car. They will throw that thing in a microwave to kill off alien gamma rays (or add) and then the sickness comes. I had one once.... once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm

Would like that even better, Otis, except for colder winters and finding a job as an anglophone and, um, trying to get Quebec to let me emigrate!

Will do, Otis. I've got a friend there I hang with at MUTEK and every year on the last day we brainstorm emigration strategies for me :) she makes music as CMD and has a radio show on CKUT

Great show today. I've spent the last three hours going through old files and shredding stuff, some of which might have been upsetting if I hadn't had such a good distraction.

Haha, LL, I thought of that but I don't think so :) she has a very nice male partner of several years standing. I admit to a lil crush on her, though.

Now tuning in! Was occupied earlier, so glad these are archived :)

I guess I should have explained that 3 AM release better. These are recordings by local cartoonist Steve Anderson. They were found at his house full of massive stacks and boxes of random media, including home recordings of himself. When he showed me these two tapes, I decided to preserve them on CD-R format and had him draw the art and write the liner notes for his own release :) If you play the second half, it is divided into individual tracks, but he only lists it all simply as Track 4 in the liner notes. Thanks for giving it a listen!
