@Henry:First it was Czechoslavakia then Hungary stopped patrolling the border w/ Austria So East Germans went to Czechoslavakia to Austria to West Germany. Poland had one anti-solidarity crackdown right before then, and the rest of the Eastern block all sort of gave up.

I worked with a woman from China who was convinced that because the population there is so enormous and unequal, if they allowed true freedom it would lead to total anarchy. She had a point. China only barely stays stable because the massive state control keeps tensions in check.
