Coel, your back inside? I gave up trying to work outside and fell asleep.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:11pm hyde:

hello! just back from Houston, so might be scarce tonight. listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:13pm Gary:

Hyde, you gotta not be scarce and tell us about Houston -- you know how much I wanna go
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:13pm coelacanth∅:

around spring i ate in a turkish restaurant in my town and the music was fantastic. i asked the waiter and he gave me the name of his spotify playlist, which i listened to a lot for a few weeks. he described it -i forget but he named 3 artists, the beatles being one and Jimi Hendrix i think...said it was like the turkish equivalent. anyway it's psych. i might even recognise some of the songs tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:14pm coelacanth∅:

Franco yeah it's brutal out there right now! 130% humidity!
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:14pm hyde:

@Gary hot tip: if you ever get to Houston, the Hong Kong City Mall still has a pretty big Vietnamese DVD/CD store with lots of stuff priced at 2$. I got a few CDs that look like they're singers from the 70's I didn't know.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:15pm Franco Twinkie:

OY!
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:16pm hyde:

also, Hong Kong City Mall is not far from Pho Dien, where i had the best pho i've ever eaten
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:16pm Gary:

Holy Shit, Hyde -- I'm jealous already
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:16pm coelacanth∅:

('course i don't think that's possible but i wish i could've come inside and gone to sleep. my paying gig though.)
hey hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:17pm Gary:

If only there was some sort of social ... I don't know ... network? Where you could share photos, Hyde
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:17pm Franco Twinkie:

Over this way, only 95 degrees but it feels like 110...according to the Weather Underground.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:20pm Franco Twinkie:

That settles it Hyde, Vietnamese for dinner.
  Wed. 9/4/19 7:20pm βrian:

64°F here. It's nice not to have to turn on the AC. The windows are open and the breezes are soft.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:21pm coelacanth∅:

i think it was only maybe 80ºf here today but it stormed heavy before. i had to walk the grounds after to see if a tree came down because it sounded like it. just a 12' piece of molding came off the house.
i thought that would blow out some humidity but it was much worse after. the windows are all dripping.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:21pm Franco Twinkie:

Where is "here" Brian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:21pm Gary:

βrian!
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:23pm northguineahills:

I only got TS winds here, but it was after I went to sleep, no damage or power outages...
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:23pm hyde:

also Houston is really sprawling and not built for pedestrians. So it's ride share all over when you go. But that's not too expensive there and it let's you know what an immigrant city this is--I got picked up by citizens who had moved from Jamaica, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, etc.

The Fine Arts Museum and the Menil Collection are world class. It's hot, but there's usu. a breeze from the Gulf. The landscape is kind of strange--it's strip malls like crazy and there is no zoning so it's all a jumble. But that also means that a residential neighborhood might hold a great bbq joint or a weird bar or maybe there's a strip club next to the church. (I exaggerate, but that's kind of the urban setup.)
  Wed. 9/4/19 7:23pm βrian:

@FT: Why, the Isthmus 'tween the lakes. Madison, WI.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:25pm Gary:

@Hyde: Great, now I need a motorcycle
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:26pm hyde:

lastly, the food. it's unbelievable. Great barbecue, rafts of regional Mexican food, Tex-Mex, breakfast tacos and the Vietnamese choices are incredible.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:27pm hyde:

hiya coel!
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:28pm northguineahills:

hyde: I always wanted to hit the Rothko Chapel and dj screw's old record store, but the latter is now closed....
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:31pm Franco Twinkie:

Rafts of regional Mexican food. I like that! It conjures images of combination plates floating through the shipping channels.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:31pm hyde:

@ngh the dang Rothko Chapel is closed for restoration until 2020, so I didn't get to see it! argh. but the Menil collection surrealist and African and Oceanic works made that a totally worthwhile visit anyhow. (especially cause it's free!)
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:31pm hyde:

@Franco ha! also, you already live somewhere with rafts of regional Mexican food.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:32pm Franco Twinkie:

It's never enough!
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:40pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw a great Rothko show at UC Berkeley a long time ago. The gallery there is a peculiar two story affair that reminds me of a mall. But, like the mall you can look at everything down below from the upper deck, which is kind of great.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:43pm northguineahills:

I want to hear Morton Feldman's "Rothko Chapel" in Rothko Chapel. (I believe they did a performance there four years ago).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:43pm Rich in Washington:

This is fantastic, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:45pm Gary:

Rich, come on in!
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:45pm northguineahills:

@hyde: I just got a shipment of mexi ingredients from my mum-in-law from Mexico, so I'm the source for Mexi food here. The Mexican places that cater Mexicans here are fine, but are too meat focused for my tastes. Still have yet to find a place w/ decent menudo....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:46pm Gary:

I had a terrific nopales taco this weekend
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:55pm Franco Twinkie:

NGH, oh man, a couple of weeks ago I was at the farmers market and one of the guys I get stone fruit from was eating a tub of menudo. He said he got it from this place on the corner that I've never had occasion to go into because it just looks like a lame-ass burger joint. Boy was I wrong! The burger trappings are just a clever disguise. I took a tub of menudo home and had my mind blown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:57pm Rich in Washington:

This is nuts. You're not doing anything to this in the studio are you, Gary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:58pm Gary:

Nope, just listening
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:58pm Asheville Jon:

is this supposed to sound like this? all choppy and insane?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 7:59pm Gary:

Asheville Jon, yes! Y'all know I like to play one or two tracks of the crazy ass shit
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 7:59pm nostrangerer:

Great dance music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 8:00pm Asheville Jon:

not complaining, just curious!
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 8:00pm northguineahills:

@deanco: still looking for the elusive Menudo album cover of them eating menudo..(in menudo)…..
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 8:01pm Franco Twinkie:

Shit Gary, Just hearing that bums me out. Our bodega (we call it a tiendita) which we can walk to just closed there doors forever. They always had fresh nopale salad in the cold case that they would make in the store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 8:02pm Gary:

Howdy, nostrangerer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 8:05pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 8:18pm Gary:

  Wed. 9/4/19 8:19pm melinda:

@Gary dunno. It makes sense that Houston would be more attractive to immigrants than NYC based on current cost of living these days.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 8:19pm JakeGould:

Queens is pretty ethically diverse. Brooklyn too. Whenever I contemplate leaving this very expensive and harsh metropolis I realize that it’s not so great elsewhere.

And HELLO GARY!

ETHNICALLY!!!

RW. I understand. I grew up eating the shit, so you would think I was totally down with tripe....Not so! Years ago Chresti and I worked in a mannequin factory in East L.A. We had a food truck come by for lunch that had tripe burritos. I thought what the hell, and got one. I couldn't eat it! The tripe was out of context.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 9:30pm coelacanth∅:

backtracking because i've been away from the comments...
i never knew menudo was a food! (i knew it was a singing group. that's as far as i got.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 9:31pm melinda:

I'm trying to remember now why I put cash in an accordion file. I think I thought it was like keeping it under a mattress or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 9:35pm coelacanth∅:

i used to hide cash (& herb) in various places, when i didn't need it all right away. would find it sometimes years later in the inside pocket of a corduroy jacket or a book or under a rug.
(sometimes the herb wasn't worth much anymore)
  Wed. 9/4/19 9:36pm Johnzon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 9:40pm coelacanth∅:

definitely revisiting this when i'm home. this music deserves volume.
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 9:40pm northguineahills:

I had a friend who bought a polyester leisure suit at a thrift store and found a gigantic bag of blow in the inside jacket pocket. it was still good after 35+ years.
  Wed. 9/4/19 9:41pm rw:

Melinda, I'm putting a couple $20s in an accordion file right now. I know a guy who, on his first date with the woman who is now his wife, felt something in the pocket of the shirt he had bought at a garage sale, pulled it out and presented it to her saying, "I have something for you". It turned out to be a diamond ring!
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 9:41pm TDK60:

the stringed solo instrument sounds like a tanbur. I want one; anyone have one in the attic they don't want?

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 9:44pm melinda:

@ngh that's hilarious
@rw what a great story
  Wed. 9/4/19 9:44pm rw:

Putting a couple 20s in an accordion file and buying all my clothes at the thrift shop from now on!
Avatar Wed. 9/4/19 9:45pm Franco Twinkie:

NGH, This is most likely no solution to your predicament, but what the hell: When I was in high school I went with a friend to his grandfathers house. They sat on the couch and played guitars. Out of the blue, the grandfather asked me if I liked menudo. When I said yes, he got up and went into the kitchen and got a can of soup and said very emphatically "This is excellent! Menududito brand." and stabbed the label with his finger. It would have made a great commercial, because he looked like an Apache Indian - long black hair with a rag tied around his head, a bright red plaid flannel shirt and fringed moccasin boots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/4/19 9:46pm coelacanth∅:

ngh i bought a car for $300. a few years back. the guys who sold it to me said the owner died in his early 50s. thing was rotted out and leaked when it rained and the driver side window fell into the door about a year later. (but it ran amazingly and the traney was perfect too)
when i took the panel off to fix it i found a vial which i was to determine was grey horse.
(i did not try it)

Thanks for the Anatolian psychedelia, Gary. How do ya say "very paisley" in Turkish?

I know that not knowing the language is a hazard that come with the Bodega Pop category but a few of the ernest songs that didn't sound like love or party songs really had me wondering.

cc, I think it's true! They both told it to me together and had answers to my own questions of disbelief!

oh, rw yeah i did something some people would say is bad. i asked someone i knew (still know) if he could identify it. i told him what i thought it was. he said he'll bring it to someone to find out and i figured i'd never see it again and i didn't care.
i later mentioned this to someone who said "you didn't know that Hans is a smack addict?". no, i didn't.
oh well...he would've gotten some from somewhere.

Oh, and they said they returned the ring to the woman who had held the garage sale.
