Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:08pm Erica:

I'm wearing prescription specks. Would be nice to have Google glasses to record things or take photos without a camera though. However, that could do eye damage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:09pm Funky16Corners:

I just want my glasses to let me read and see things clearly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:09pm Funky16Corners:

Can you hear Leon on the backing vocals?
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:10pm coelacanth∅:

hmm. 13" laptop speakers.
i like how they try to sound like the beatles though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:11pm Matt from New Orleans:

C Google refocused the glass on industrial uses which is where it belongs.

I'm thinking of a 60s band
  Wed. 8/7/19 10:28pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey and howdy! Producer Snuff Garrett (RIP) once told me that the Tulsa migration started after he formed a tight friendship with Leon - they were having probs getting the Wrecking Crew on various sessions because of their heavy schedule. Leon said, “Well hell- I have pals back home that can do what they do!” And - out came JJ, Carl Radle and the rest of the OK guys...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:29pm Funky16Corners:

Hey BPN! That sounds about right.
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:30pm Erica:

Grady and Brady sound like identical twins. Haha!

@Erica - They were!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:31pm Matt from New Orleans:

Duane Eddy?
  Wed. 8/7/19 10:31pm Dean:

Isn't "diaspora" just a bit of an overstatement?
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:32pm Erica:

I will be sure to look them up Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

I don't think so at all. I mean there weren't thousands of them, but there was a bunch and they were important.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:32pm Matt from New Orleans:

Seriously you’re going to talk to anyone else about overstatement?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - What about Duane Eddy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:33pm Matt from New Orleans:

He’s the only cover from 60s that’s even remotely rocky under the name wildwood flower.
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:33pm coelacanth∅:

Matt haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - According to Mr Webster: " The movement, migration or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:36pm Erica:

I've only heard the Monkees version of Saturday's Child. I wonder why I never heard David Gates' own version of this song, if David Gates ever recorded his own version of the song. I'd look this stuff up but it takes the fun out of the conversation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I don't know of a version by Gates
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:39pm Erica:

Me neither Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:39pm doctorjazz:

Nino Tempo and April Stevens. Haven't heard those names in a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:39pm Matt from New Orleans:

Is that a harpsichord?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:39pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - The album that that cut is from is one of my faves from the 60s
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:40pm doctorjazz:

Jerry's boy, never heard this single, cool!
  Wed. 8/7/19 10:40pm Dean:

Yeah, but diaspora connotes dispersal -- from A to W, X, Y, Z, and so on. OED: "Any group of people who have spread or become dispersed beyond their traditional homeland or point of origin; the dispersion or spread of a group of people in this way; an instance of this." And to disperse means (per OED) "To cause to separate in different directions; to throw or drive about in all directions, to scatter; to rout."

Yeah, I'm a dick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:41pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - There's another recording of that song by an LA singer named Matthew Moore who later joined The Moon with David Marks (original Beach Boy)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:42pm Matt from New Orleans:

Well Dean there already was a previous diaspora of Okies during the dust bowl. They were just joining that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:42pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - I'm pretty sure they were living in different houses/apartments in L.A.
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

that Gary Lewis song is on the one 'playboys album in our house when i was little. ("hits again") -i thought they were british then!
i loved that album 5 decades ago! i tried listening to it a few years ago and didn't like a moment of it!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:47pm Funky16Corners:

Hey everybody! Let's argue about MUSIC! (or not...argue)
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:47pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:48pm Matt from New Orleans:

Where’s my mocking bird?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:48pm Matt from New Orleans:

Or mockingbird
  Wed. 8/7/19 10:49pm Dean:

QED!
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:49pm Erica:

Your mockingbird doesn't sing Matt.
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

i think it's that -now that i know the original versions of most of the songs on that album, it's clear that the playboys had nothing on the originals.
(also i'm just not so into bubblegummy pop as i was as a child)
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:50pm Erica:

How about a diamond ring instead?
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:50pm coelacanth∅:

...but the former reason is the main thing. i certainly do like some very bubblegummy music.
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:51pm still b/p:

Just erased/cancelled two typed cents on the usage.

Saw an NPR article rerun about "worst" songs and it included some, to me, rrrreally unlikely targets. "Do You Know the Way to San Jose"....! C'mahhhn. 'S'mattah witcha?!

Chug-a-lug and Testify!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:51pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:53pm fleep:

Did someone say steroids? Did you bring enough for everybody? And good evening, Larry.
  Wed. 8/7/19 10:54pm Dean:

I love Bacharach, but I've always wondered which San Jose David is referring to: the one in the Bay Area of California, or the one in Costa Rica? Must admit I've never listened to the lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:55pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Fleep!
  Wed. 8/7/19 10:55pm rw:

Hey kids!
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 10:57pm coelacanth∅:

(but then 7 second delay today was about bad song lyrics. i didn't tune in, but the 3 examples Ken gave earlier today were a testimonial to ulterior motives.
the majority of songs in this world have stupid lyrics; yet he chose 3 that fell somewhere between slightly dumb, not bad at all, and apparently beyond his understanding.)
  Wed. 8/7/19 10:57pm rw:

F16C, I'm looking at the playlist. What was the song that sounded like the Elevators a while ago?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

@rw - Either Captain Beefheart or Hoyt Axton
  Wed. 8/7/19 11:00pm rw:

Hoyt Axton! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

That's a cool album if you can track it down
  Wed. 8/7/19 11:03pm rw:

I'll look for it. It's got a cool title for starters!

Larry, where do you find these rare 60s pop gems, not counting bands that were popular at the time?
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

these are good lyrics. www.azlyrics.com...
and there's nothing wrong with the music -even if you're not into that era/style.
...and it's pretty obvious which san josé it's about.

I ask because I use Discogs for tracklistings. I don't go crate digging often.
  Wed. 8/7/19 11:05pm rw:

Erica, Larry has superpowers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:05pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I make the connections and follow them. Look at who wrote the songs, who produced the records, and spend a lot of time digging through 45s and LPs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:05pm Funky16Corners:

@rw - Yes, that is true as well.
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:05pm Erica:

Haha good one rw.

@Erica - This is probably the most un-Leon Russell-like song he wrote
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I only found out about that Whitlock 45 a few years ago. It took me a while to score a copy

Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:14pm Erica:

At least you got a copy of it now Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:14pm Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed! It has a great soul tune on the flip (by Whitlock)
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:15pm coelacanth∅:

...and i don't have the first one on vinyl; but it's insane for me to even consider buying records right now.

Hey! I've mentioned before somewhere that Les Blank's film, "A Poem Is A Naked Person", about Leon Russell is a stunningly singular record of Russell's wild charisma.
  Wed. 8/7/19 11:41pm rw:

Ha! Larry, I just looked it up. He was born in Nebraska but lived in Oklahoma City for 15 years before moving to LA in '56. That move is part of his lore. But I guess his trip predates the one you're looking at by a few years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:41pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Geezerette! I've always wanted to see that but have not had the opportunity
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:41pm Funky16Corners:

  Wed. 8/7/19 11:47pm rw:

I must admit I don't know L. Russell all that well but a friend gave me a record called Will 'o the Wisp recently. It's pretty wacky in kind of a good way!

It's the song about the journey from dusty Tulsa!

(Also a great album, remember them from when they came out.
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:49pm Erica:

Okay Chresti and Franco. I need to check out this Shelter People album too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:49pm Funky16Corners:

'And the Shelter People' is one of the truly great rock albums of the 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

'Leon Live' is also essential. It's like a revival meeting.

L.A. in the late sixties was insane. The hippy musicians were my heroes and they were everywhere. You could bump into them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

I always picture Leon and his extended musical family rambling around in a converted schoolbus
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:54pm doctorjazz:

Take that, George Benson!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

I'm sure George sent some big fat checks Leon's way!
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:54pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/7/19 11:56pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Larry!
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:56pm Erica:

I wish I could bump into a hippy musician.
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:56pm geezerette:

The clothes and music were astounding, a lot of behaviour not so.
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:58pm Erica:

Gary Sanders was Kernel Sanders of KFC? Haha! (I know not really; that was a joke.)
Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:58pm geezerette:

Coel! Ha! :) (ka-thunk, sorry!...ka-thunk, sorry!...)

Avatar Wed. 8/7/19 11:58pm coelacanth∅:
