It's sad that I only know Marvin's big hits and none of his other stuff. |
![]() |
![]() There are a TON of great songs all along the way Erica. If you hear anything unfamiliar tonight, go out and get it! |
![]() |
![]() I knew this from the Band before I heard the Gate version. This one is cool too. |
![]() |
![]() I’ll be wearing a hat and sunglasses as I’m on the lam. On the other hand, that guy in the stands at the Dodgers game during Curb Your Enthusiasm was able to verify his alibi and beat the bogus murder charges. |
![]() |

![]() That's crazy! |
![]() |
![]() It’s just a series of crazy coincidences and a ridiculous effort by the lawyer |
![]() |
![]() And, Credence did a classic version of Grapevine (though it was a bit long...) |
![]() |
![]() I wanted to choose a lesser-known version. My fave will always be Gladys Knight and the Pips |
![]() |
![]() I’ve always liked this el Chicano |
![]() |
![]() This is a great album |
![]() |
![]() Yup |

Erica:
I always though this song (the Marvin Gaye version) was overrated as FM radio won't stop playing it. |
![]() |
![]() I can understand your fatigue but I must respectfully disagree. This album is a masterpiece from end to end. |
![]() |
![]() Have you ever listened to entire album Erica? |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 10:32pm
Erica:
I didn't say it was bad. I've just heard the hits from the album too many times. I need to check out the rest of that album. |
![]() |
![]() I’m utterly flabbergasted but I’ll leave it at that. |
![]() |
![]() I think listening to he whole thing will be a revelation |
![]() |
![]() Gladys Knight did a masterful version for sure. |
![]() |

That was an amazing story Matt. But I will say this, If the police scrutinized video of the cheap seats of any Dodger game they would surly turn up more that a few suspects with outstanding warrants. |

Like that dancey El Chicano version, and Marvin's is a long, longtime top favorite track. Fantastically evocative and one of the songs that endures and holds up remarkably well and deserves its response and respect. |

![]() inner city blues always been a fave in general and my favorite track on the album there's another great version by Sly & Robbie... s b/p i shall follow that advice |
![]() |
![]() haha i don't agree with ANY of those albums as the top 6! though they're all great. |
![]() |
![]() Yeah, that RS list is rockist AF. All great records, but a little myopic |

![]() eh, rolling stone. it's not even as bad as i'd expect! |

First time I saw a melodica, it was Tortoise w/ a long tube going into a synth when they went through their Morricone phase.... I've borrowed a couple before, a lot of fun to play. (and yes, I'm a Augustus Pablo fan). |

Wed. 7/17/19 11:03pm
northguineahills:
@larry: yeah, wasn't familiar w/ him, that cover hit it w/ me... |

![]() @NGH - I bought my oldest son a melodica years ago. He always enjoyed it, and of all the instruments you could give to a five year old, it was at least pleasant to listen to |

Erica:
The Marvin version I mean. |
![]() |
![]() I don't remember that. i'll have to check Youtube |
![]() |
![]() of course what's going on is a Great album and a major achievement... but -i don't think Marvin would've gone where he went if Stevie and Curtis and Isaac and Sly hadn't paved the way. |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:10pm
Dean:
I saw Augustus Pablo live in west Los Angeles. One of the better shows ever. I can't process "Michael McDonald" and "favorite singer." Even if, arguably, he's a singer, how can he possibly rise to favorite?

![]() Pharoah Sanders! Outrageous! |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:17pm
Dean:
Two or three or four years ago, my son would listen to a popular singer, Sam Smith, whom I dubbed "Mush Mouth," because he sounded like he was singing with a mouth full of mashed potatoes. My son got the epithet. Indeed, Smith is a mush mouth! His songs would show up on radio and my son would announce, "Dad, this is Mush Mouth." Smith sounds very similar to McDonald in this regard. Neither understands that, as a singer, one needs to a-r-t-i-c-u-l-a-t-e now and then.
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:19pm
Erica:
I thought Mush Mouth was that kid in Fat Albert. |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:19pm
Erica:
Haha! |
![]() |
![]() @Doc - Who knew Pharoah could/would blow R&B like this? |
![]() |
![]() the original mush mouth was a mouse |
![]() |
![]() ...with a sawed off shotgun! |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:22pm
Dean:
Which just goes to prove how unoriginal Sam Smith was!
![]() |
![]() It sounds like REAL R&B, and it sounds like Pharoah! What a trip! |
![]() |
![]() What about Punkin' Puss? |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:23pm
Erica:
I hope you don't mean a mouse named Mickey. |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:25pm
Dean:
Punkin' Puss attacks Mushmouth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU6woY7iF2c If that ain't allegory, I don't know what is.
![]() |
![]() Two songs from the last 20 years Larry! Quelle surprise! |
![]() |
![]() @Erica - We're referencing an old Hanna Barbera cartoon called Mush Mouse & Punkin' Puss. Kind of a hillbilly Tom & Jerry thing |
![]() |
![]() @Matt - To paraphrase Monty Python 'No One Expects the Last 20 Years!!' |
![]() |
![]() (far more interesting and less annoying then mickey) |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:29pm
Erica:
Never heard of that HB cartoon. Must've been less popular than Huckleberry Hound or Yogi Bear, or even the Flintstones. |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:29pm
still b/p:
Despite the long Mickey saturation/exposure, I can't tell you what his character personality is supposed to be. Doesn't seem very distinct, the way Bugs and plenty of lesser stars are. |
![]() |
![]() If you're around my age or older, you got to see all kinds of crazy HBR cartoons, like Secret Squirrel, Squiddly Diddly, The Impossibles etc |
![]() |
![]() @sbp - I've been watching classic Bugs Bunny stuff with my youngest son over the last few days. He's been digging it. |

![]() DC over the last few years has been releasing reimagined Hanna Barbera comics. Some have been amazing like Snagglepuss Exit Stage Left. |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:32pm
Dean:
Laurel & Hardy, folks. Show them to your kids. I generally eschew video of any kind -- movies, video, TV -- but L&H hit the spot.
![]() |
![]() yeah top cat! i loved that...and forgot all about it. i do remember that my mother didn't like that i liked it! |
![]() |
![]() Snagglepuss is a gay commie playwright in the 50s and gets caught up in HUAC |
![]() |
![]() wow snagglepuss; morocco mole...very vague memories |
![]() |
![]() @Dean - I recently bought the 10CD Hal Roach Studios L&H collection. All kinds of shorts, features and even the foreign language features that L&H did speaking Spanish! |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:35pm
Franco Twinkie:
That's because Top Cat and his posse were a bunch of hoodlums. Your mom read it correctly, Coel. |
![]() |
![]() This Grover Washington album is odd, in that it has two tracks 14 minutes or longer, and one three minute Bread cover. |
![]() |
![]() The other long cover is a version of the Temptations 'Masterpiece' |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:36pm
Franco Twinkie:
Dean, does that collection include Big Business? |
![]() |
![]() i know -i can picture him peeking up from the trash can with the lid on his head! |

I could watch all of that L&H, F16C, all of it.
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:37pm
Erica:
I always like Huckleberry Hound the best. I just can't stand it when he sings 'Oh My Darling Clementine". And yes Matt Snagglepuss was gay. |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:37pm

Larry has the collection, Franco. I'm not into collecting video.

![]() |
![]() hey does anyone here know how to set a macbook to never install or check for updates to "apps"? |

![]() @Dean - Chump at Oxford features a young Peter Cushing! |
![]() |
![]() That would be very stupid thing to do C |
![]() |
![]() (never mind, just figured it out) |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:43pm
Dean:
Sorry, had to look up Peter Cushing. I really don't like movies at all, so I know very little about the who and what of them.
![]() |
![]() Matt, it wouldn't. |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:44pm
still b/p:
The other day a friend and I got to talking Top Cat, and had to look up the name of his buddy, Benny the Ball. |
![]() |
![]() I'm an inveterate movie NUT. I DVR'd ten episode of a 1940 Flash Gordon serial and was watching it with my son. |
![]() |
![]() @C - I forget which one, but one of the actors from Sgt Bilko did the voice for his animated counterpart on Top Cat. |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:45pm
Franco Twinkie:
Weird. That is one that seems to be excluded on lots of collections. Laurel and Hardy are trying to sell Christmas trees in July, without much success, until they ring the door bell of James Finlayson....then all hell breaks loose. |
![]() |
![]() We’ll agree to disagree on that one C. I hope you still manually check at a regular interval if you don’t want them automated. |
![]() |
![]() Finlayson was hilarious. The origin of D'oh! |
![]() |
![]() i can't say i'm familiar with sgt. bilko. (i've heard the name...) |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:47pm
Dean:
That would have been Phil Silvers. I don't like movies, in part, because I saw so much goddamn tv as a kid and shortly realized how vacuous it was as a medium.
![]() |
![]() @C - If you ever get the chance to see Bilko, it is one of the funniest shows ever made. Phil Silvers and an amazingly funny supporting cast |
![]() |
![]() Matt, one would only want updates for "apps" if one uses "apps". |
![]() |
Wed. 7/17/19 11:48pm
Franco Twinkie:
Oh yeah! Finlayson was the greatest agitated doofus in silent film. |
![]() |
![]() i have to add it to my list Larry. earlier today a friend implored me to watch some muppets, which i've never done. |
![]() |
![]() Your web browser is an app and that needs to be updated regularly |
![]() |
![]() (i was kind of over tv by around 1970) |
![]() |
![]() @C - Go for the original Muppet show. Very funny and lots of cool guest stars |

![]() |

Brando and Bertolucci hatched the scene idea without Schneider, didn't tell her until time for the shot. Bertolucci WANTED her to be discomfited. She felt stressed and humiliated, and powerless. The sex was simulated but she regarded it as an assault and appallingly unfair and ill-conceived. Watch the film and you're seeing a real and real uncomfortable thing. |
