I realized I wasn't sure what a knave was so looked it up: villain, scamp, rascal, rogue, scoundrel. Disparaging term applied to persons considered dishonest or worthless. Knave, which formerly meant merely a boy or servant, in modern use emphasizes baseness of nature and intention.
