There was a time yesterday when all 3 streams had live programs at the same time. Plus broadcast. This takes the choices from amazing to mind warping. Thank the grid for the archives.

Hello ! On my way home
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:25pm coelacanth∅:

did they put rue in ale? rue is an element in a pregnancy-termination concoction, along with pennyroyal and tansy.
not recommended for weak or sick people, since it is poison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:26pm David D:

Hello Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:27pm David D:

Coel: I've never had any in my ale, but it is apparently a tradition in some places.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:27pm chris:

hand's off my thyme! but i have plenty of rosemary. help yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:28pm coelacanth∅:

so, added to the glass? (not in the brewing process?)
  Tue. 7/2/19 3:28pm Dean:

Who knows where the thyme goes?
  Tue. 7/2/19 3:28pm Dean:

Does anybody really know what thyme it is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:30pm Yvang:

I guess the one on my side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:30pm coelacanth∅:

i don't know where the thyme goes, but my Love grows where my Rosemary goes
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:32pm fleep:

Anyone who steals thyme is a chive turkey
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:32pm David D:

Greetings Dean - all sage questions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:32pm Michael 98145:

{ World Cup Update : England 1 - USA 1 at 29' }
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:33pm David D:

Just fixed that year - that may have been Wingdings...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:33pm coelacanth∅:

on my sister's property we use thyme as a ground cover over some fairly large areas, and when the thyme goes, it's usually because it lost track of itself and smothered
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:35pm Michael 98145:

{ now USA 2 at 34' }
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:36pm chris:

rue may be beneficial in relieving nervous spasms, painful cramps, menstrual pain, and headaches, apparently...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:37pm David D:

Maybe it's a built-in hangover remedy (half-kidding?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:38pm coelacanth∅:

so maybe rue adds to the head
(not the head on the brew; the head in the head)
like wormwood, but like wormwood, is poisonous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:38pm Webhamster Henry:

They're projecting the World Cup live at the club acoss the street from me. Kingston has had a soccer club for a few years now, we're getting continental. www.stockadefc.com
Now if only they'd build a subway. Surface rail transport would also suffice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:39pm coelacanth∅:

i'd like to know what that statue is composed of
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:40pm David D:

Well Germany's out, but strikingly little is made of the women's tournament here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:44pm Michael 98145:

... enjoying this collection
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:44pm coelacanth∅:

i just realised the botanical name for rue is ruta graveolens, which is a homeopathic remedy for sprains, strains tendonitis and such
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:46pm David D:

Rue by the way features prominently on the coat of arms and flag of Saxony.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 3:47pm geezerette:

The great June Tabor!
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 3:48pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:48pm David D:

Greetings Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:51pm coelacanth∅:

well i just finished my irish tea
- prematurely, as the related music still plays
...and sadly this also means i must get my ass back outside and to work, as it unfortunately didn't rain after all and is again beautiful but humid out.
  Tue. 7/2/19 3:51pm Dean:

This Julie Fowlis is spectacular. Reminds me of the best years of Ossian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:51pm coelacanth∅:

...maybe i can think of something else to "need" to research on the computer before heading back out
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 3:52pm geezerette:

Just watched "Festival" on Criterion. Beautiful film made of 1963-64 Newport Folk Festival.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:55pm Yvang:

Krismenn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:56pm David D:

Coel - there is always something to look for, describes half my life...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:58pm coelacanth∅:

yes. why do the mulberries shrivel up before they ripen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 3:59pm Yvang:

Apparently this is the first time ever Krismenn is played on WFMU.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 4:08pm David D:

It is a pleasure, βrian - do you have an odd working schedule?
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:09pm βrian:

Nah, just a vacation sandwich around the July 4th holiday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 4:10pm David D:

Oh yes, of course - easy to forget over here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 4:13pm chris:

i think this one may be one we all want to forget (this 4th)
  Tue. 7/2/19 4:15pm Dean:

Stance gives you balance. Daughter gives you laughter.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:15pm βrian:

The fireflies have been on display the past few nights, so there's that.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:21pm geezerette:

Fireflies... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 4:23pm David D:

There is a place in the woods here with a stunning number of fireflies - should go have a look one of these late evenings...
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:43pm TDK60:

Hello. Saw my first fireflies (or lightning bugs) here in New York City on Sunday night.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:44pm geezerette:

You really should! The only fireflies here are tiny bulbs on wires in The Pirates of the Carribean" ride at Disneyland.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:46pm geezerette:

TDK60: incredible right?! I saw my first and only ones on a riverbank near Narrowsberg.
  Tue. 7/2/19 4:47pm Dean:

Wait, you're saying those aren't real, geezerette?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 4:48pm David D:

Hello TDK60 - love the term "lightning bug"!
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:50pm geezerette:

Hahaha! Sorry Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 4:50pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

what on earth are you kids playing now?
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:50pm TDK60:

geezerette: where's Narrowsberg? // Forgot to check along the river for mulberries; may still be there and ripe since we had a cool, late spring. // I think lightning bug is more southern? (Parents from West Virginia)...
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:50pm geezerette:

Pirates are real though.
  Tue. 7/2/19 4:51pm Dean:

Yes, and the mice.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:55pm geezerette:

TDK60, I think it's southeast of Manhattan but I'm from Ca. and wasn't driving so can't tell you where! Fairly close to Port Jervis, which also won't help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 4:55pm Rich in Washington:

OH YEAH!
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 4:57pm geezerette:

Dean,I worked for that mouse., so I know he's real.
  Tue. 7/2/19 4:57pm sem:

How fabulous was that? Hello, David, all.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 5:00pm geezerette:

Hey Rich! Love that cover!
  Tue. 7/2/19 5:00pm Dean:

My better half worked there, too. Later this summer she'll escort our 8YO to "the happiest place on Earth." I'll stay home, thank you, with my head at the sweet spot between the loudspeakers, truly the happiest place.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 5:01pm geezerette:

good match
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:10pm David D:

Hey there Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:14pm fleep:

Gaylord devoted 2 shows to the year 1972, calling it the greatest year in pop music history. So maybe 1972?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:16pm David D:

Thanks, fleep, I will have a look and listen - so far nothing quite worked like 1968 in international coverdom...
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 5:20pm TDK60:

Gaylord is a 1972 fanatic. I think he's more into the pop singles. But I think 1973 was pretty good, but for albums.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 5:22pm geezerette:

Howdy, Michael!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:39pm David D:

Can't win 'em all, Stanley, or it would be boring, I suppose. Anyhow I'm glad to see the women's tournament getting more attention that it is here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:39pm Michael 98145:

what is the theme of that hat?

It's the hat from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice' sequence in "Fantasia".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:43pm Michael 98145:

that sounded like someone playing a khaen
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:44pm Michael 98145:

oh, wow! i guess i've never seen that -- haven't been near a Disney property in many years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:44pm David D:

Yes, Park Jiha is Korean and she plays piri (double reed bamboo flute), saenghwang (mouth organ) & yanggeum (hammered dulcimer).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:45pm David D:

That is indeed quite a hat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:46pm David D:

Did you work on animations there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:48pm chresti:

Michael, we drew on paper. Feel like I illuminated manuscripts.
Transitional years...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:51pm David D:

Sounds like fun - or was it more work than fun?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:52pm chresti:

A lot of animation work is farmed out to other countries, like India, these days?
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 5:56pm geezerette:

It was partly fun. Some old guys were still there, great stories.

Chresti, it's global but they still have a lot of on site work. Not much paper!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:56pm chris:

oldest went to cal arts... lots of folks in the animation program were Korean. the Simpsons animators got outsourced to a Korean firm, iirc (may have changed hands again, for all i know)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 5:59pm chris:

thanks, David! this is my stop. take good care, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:00pm chresti:

A recent Fanfare review of this recording of Kodály’s cello works -- http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2018/Mar/Kodaly_cello_95574.htm -- concludes, "Várdai and Würtz have found unexpected depth in these scores, revealing how great Kodály’s gifts as a composer actually were, something we overlook because of the long shadow cast by Bartók and the fact that Kodály’s field work, writing, and teaching squeezed his output of compositions into a relatively small scope. It took these revelatory performances to remind me of his stature, and I won’t forget again." I can't wait to hear it.

This is super and lulling me to sleep.
Good night David and everyone.
  Tue. 7/2/19 6:17pm Dean:

Of course, Kodály's birthday won't be until December.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:18pm Michael 98145:

this is wonderful
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:18pm David D:

Thanks, Dean - I will have to look for that and put his birthday on my calendar...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:19pm David D:

And sleep well, Stanley!

Dean, it is very lovely. Full of feeling. Joyousness!

I remember hearing Iona Brown when she was first chair (pretty sure?) with LA Chamber Orchestra. I associate her with, say, Vivaldi. Good to hear that she wandered farther afield into later music, much like Andrew Manze, who now conducts much later composers, e.g., Vaughan Williams.
  Tue. 7/2/19 6:26pm Dean:

First chair?! She was the director! I'd forgotten. Nor did I remember that she died fifteen years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:27pm David D:

Yes, sadly.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 6:36pm geezerette:

This music is strongly evocative of the world in which it was created. I don't know anything about music but my mind sees an entire constellation of values expressed in design while listening.
Both invigorating and calming!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:41pm David D:

Very well put, Geezerette, although I suspect you might in fact know quite a bit!
  Tue. 7/2/19 6:42pm Dean:

Was just reading about Gardner's Chandos recordings of Lutosławski orchestral works.

Sorry, I was watching the WC, then took a nap. It was 40C/101F earlier, thankfully, it's now raining, but a leetle too much as I lost power for an hour.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 6:45pm geezerette:

Thanks,David, but I'm one of those,"...but I know what I like" people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:45pm Michael 98145:

hydrate, @ngh! how's the job search going?
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 6:47pm geezerette:

Dean, thanks for being generous with your knowledge. :)
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 6:47pm northguineahills:

I never got past 2nd chair in any of my respective instruments, yet, I was always my instrument leader, even as a sophomore (I was a wee bit thick headed, but good leadership quality, apparently)>
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:47pm David D:

Hey NGH - yes stay out of that heat!
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 6:48pm northguineahills:

@Michael: Had an in-depth 40 minute 2nd interview this afternoon. Reason #4 I'm so late....
  Tue. 7/2/19 6:49pm Dean:

I tend to pass along the knowledge of others, e.g., the Fanfare reviewers. Wish I could claim an expertise in the area, but no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:49pm David D:

Yes, Dean - thanks for all your insights!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/2/19 6:50pm Michael 98145:

@David: Let's just say it was so stressful, I took a shot in the middle. I think I performed well. Thankfully it was just a phone interview. But it was for Duke Power, as a subcontractor. But beggars can't be choosers.
Avatar Tue. 7/2/19 6:55pm geezerette:

NGH, fingers crossed!
Encouraging!!!
Drink something cold now.
