Google CEO Sundar Pichai's NYT op-ed (May 7): "To make privacy real, we give you clear, meaningful choices around your data. All while staying true to two unequivocal policies: that Google will never sell any personal information to third parties; and that you get to decide how your information is used. . . . a small subset of data helps serve ads that are relevant and that provide the revenue that keeps Google products free and accessible. [Mark notes: this is the data necessary for service improvement and largely irrelevant to Google's surveillance-and-control model.] That revenue also sustains a broad community of content creators, which in turn helps keep content on the web free for everyone. [Mark notes: just like flat-earth YouTubers!]"

here, need a beer... Sometimes, Mark, you remind me of Chirstian Slater in "Pump Up the Volume" (mainly your voice, you should do voice acting). Just a crazy idea from an insane person.....

Thanks, ngh, voice acting sounds intriguing! (though in that intro I wasn't acting at all)

I am always saying we need a Digital Bill of Rights
( / assertion of Bill of Rights in Digital domain).
It sounds like loony Libertarianism - but is that actually succinct ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/1/19 6:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Transparency is a good little word. I'm fond (obviously) of 'Accountability' as well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/1/19 6:39pm Mark Hurst:

Good analogy, Jake
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/1/19 6:40pm Mark Hurst:

Accountability is a good little word... too bad Google has said, on the record, that they intend to elude it ("we'll take responsibility but not liability," said a Google rep to UK Parliament a few weeks ago)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/1/19 6:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Google - LLC ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/1/19 6:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

... i.e. - 'let us take care of it - ourselves'...
Avatar Mon. 7/1/19 6:42pm JakeGould:

Facebook recruiters (staff at Facebook) once emailed me at my personal email address like 4-5 years ago trying to get me to work for them. My first question, “How did you get my email address?” and they then proudly told me how they had profiled me from data culled from multiple sources that connected an un-public address to me and thus the contact. My response was basically, “Not interested. Just take me off your mailing list.”

Like I would be impressed by being deep stalked?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 7/1/19 6:42pm Bas NL:

Responsibility without liability sounds like a naughty 15-year old.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Mon. 7/1/19 6:45pm Bas NL:

Scary that, @Jake!
Avatar Mon. 7/1/19 6:46pm northguineahills:

Could be worse, Jake, Apple contacted me to work on Apple Maps while I was employed years ago (had no idea how they tracked me down), after three interviews, I was told that they were only hiring in-house (and it paid 6 figures [ I have 2 figures in my bank account, currently])
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/1/19 6:46pm Mark Hurst:

Yes. This mindset seems to have now permeated all the industries Prof. Zuboff is listing now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/1/19 6:47pm Mark Hurst:

ngh - that must have been so frustrating. why didn't they tell you that at the beginning?!

Avatar Mon. 7/1/19 6:49pm JakeGould:

If you want to see how off the recommendations for local stuff goes, live somewhere that is not popular and has a small data set. Even in NYC in the non-hip areas the recommendations are laughable.
Avatar Mon. 7/1/19 6:49pm geezerette:

Bas...sigh.... :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 7/1/19 6:49pm Mark Hurst:

Arrrrrrrr, I hope to get around to talking about Libra on an upcoming show.
Avatar Mon. 7/1/19 6:51pm JakeGould:

Libra is a great way for an average “Joe” to put money into a Swiss bank account controlled by others.
Avatar Mon. 7/1/19 6:51pm geezerette:

Great interview.
Avatar Mon. 7/1/19 6:51pm northguineahills:

@Mark: The lead of the project said the decision came from above out of nowhere. They lost out, as Apple Maps still sucks (google maps is more accurate, and crowdsources for free)

Since I read a lot of Spanish articles (watch movies, etc), even w/ duckduckgo.com, I get a lot ads en espanol.

Is it possible to cloak your phone in a portable metal box? Isnt't the claim that the Chinese tech industry and the Chinese state military pretty much the same symbiosis of American tech and the American military?
